A bull moose that fell into an abandoned well in Maine<\/a> was pulled to safety during an elaborate five-hour rescue.<\/p>\n

The operation happened on Wednesday after Cole Brown, whose family owns the forested land in the northern Maine<\/a> community of Pembroke, spotted a pair of antlers. He heard a noise and initially thought it was turkeys but, upon, closer inspection, realized it was something a lot bigger.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe walks over and, through the thick alders and bushes, he saw the antlers \u2013 just the antlers peeking out,\u201d said Delaney Gardner, Brown\u2019s stepsister, who videotaped the rescue. \u201cHe knew that an animal of that size, he was going to need some backup just in case it was, you know, injured or just stuck there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The family alerted the Maine department of inland fisheries and wildlife, which sent a biologist who sedated the moose. Then wardens put straps on the animal and, using an excavator provided by the family, gingerly lifted the moose out of the 9ft-deep well.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce the sedation wore off, the moose took off running, no worse for wear other than perhaps his bruised ego,\u201d the agency said<\/a> on its Facebook page.<\/p>\n

Gardner said the successful rescue left her with a mix of \u201crelief and happiness\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a majestic giant animal in such a precarious situation,\u201d she said. \u201cSo to be able to see everyone come together in all these different ways that they needed to was absolutely incredible. And then seeing it work out was just so satisfying and heartwarming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gardner said the family didn\u2019t know the well \u2013 which is likely decades old \u2013 was on their 100 acres (40 hectares) of land until the moose fell into it. Since then, they have capped the well and are considering their options, including digging it out and utilizing it since there may be a water source nearby.<\/p>\n
