The roughly $600 million spacecraft carries 10 different science instruments, which it will use to monitor solar activity as well as study interstellar dust and the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar wind<\/a>, the stream of charged particles flowing continuously from our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The mission&#8217;s data will also help scientists map the outer boundary of the heliosphere, the vast bubble around our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a> that&#8217;s dominated by the sun&#8217;s solar wind and magnetic field.<\/p>\n<p>IMAP will also provide radiation warnings for astronauts \u2014 for example, those with NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis program<\/a>, which aims to establish a sustained human presence on and around the moon over the next decade or so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Radiation exposure is a real threat to our astronauts traveling to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> and beyond,&#8221; Nicky Fox, associate administrator of NASA&#8217;s Science Mission Directorate, said during a news conference on Sunday (Sept. 21).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Humanity has only ever existed inside our protective magnetosphere, and as we travel beyond that protective shield, whether it be to the moon or to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a>, the actionable information from missions like IMAP will keep our astronauts safe,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.24%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/9HxhC9yacgVBZWFnXy3v2C.jpg\" alt=\"illustration of three different sun-studying probes in deep space\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/9HxhC9yacgVBZWFnXy3v2C.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/9HxhC9yacgVBZWFnXy3v2C.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>From left to right, NASA&#8217;s Carruthers Geocorona Observatory, IMAP (Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe), and NOAA&#8217;s Space Weather Follow On-Lagrange 1 (SWFO-L1) missions will map our sun&#8217;s influence across the solar system in new ways. (Image credit: NASA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"8ad4f2c3-6a96-4103-ae90-fa33a812e8ea\">The other two spacecraft that went up today are NASA&#8217;s Carruthers Geocorona Observatory (CGO) and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration&#8217;s Space Weather Follow-on (SWFO-L1) spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>CGO will investigate the exosphere, the wispy outermost reaches of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>. The small satellite &#8220;will image the faint glow of ultraviolet light from this region, called the geocorona, to better understand how space weather impacts our planet,&#8221; NASA officials said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-sets-launch-coverage-for-space-weather-missions\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-sets-launch-coverage-for-space-weather-missions\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mission description<\/a>. &#8220;The Carruthers mission continues the legacy of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo<\/a> era, expanding on measurements first taken during Apollo 16.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>SWFO-L1 will track <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/12584-worst-solar-storms-sun-flares-history.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/12584-worst-solar-storms-sun-flares-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar storms<\/a>, providing an early warning system for space weather, which can pose a threat to satellites, astronauts in orbit and some infrastructure on the ground, such as power grids.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9e7cad35-3c23-4526-b73f-1339955db3f9\">If all goes according to plan today, the Falcon 9&#8217;s upper stage will deploy IMAP into an interplanetary transfer orbit about 84 minutes after launch. SWFO-L1 and CGO will follow suit about 6.5 minutes and 13 minutes after that, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The rocket&#8217;s first stage came back to Earth as planned today, landing a little less than nine minutes after liftoff on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> droneship &#8220;Just Read the Instructions,&#8221; which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. It was the second flight for this particular booster, according to a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/imap\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/imap\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SpaceX mission description<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s launch was the 120th Falcon 9 flight of 2025 already.
