(Reuters\/ Joe Skipper)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Altogether, the satellites from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), plus related costs, are worth about $US1.6 billion ($2.4 billion).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">NASA&#8217;s director of Heliophysics, Joe Westlake, calls it &#8220;the ultimate cosmic carpool&#8221; by sharing a rocket to save money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Heading the line-up is NASA&#8217;s Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe, the first to be deployed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-24\/nasa-artemis-program-on-track-to-take-people-to-the-moon\/105809764\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">To the moon and back: NASA launch on track for early 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">NASA&#8217;s flagship program to return humans to the moon is on track for a flight to the moon and back early next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It will scrutinise the outer limits of the heliosphere, the protective, solar wind-driven bubble of gas around our solar system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As a bonus, IMAP will be capable of providing advance notice of solar storms \u2014 a valuable 30-minute heads-up \u2014 for astronauts exploring the Moon under NASA&#8217;s Artemis program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Officials expect the observatory to be fully operational by the time four astronauts fly around the Moon and back next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">NASA&#8217;s smaller Carruthers Geocorona Observatory is also flying, set to focus on Earth&#8217;s outermost, glowing atmosphere that extends well beyond the Moon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-11\/nasa-parker-solar-space-probe-images-coronal-mass-ejections-\/105520376\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA&#8217;s &#8216;unprecedented&#8217; solar imagery <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The US space agency reveals highly-detailed imagery of massive plumes of solar material spewing out into space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is named after the late scientist George Carruthers, who invented the ultraviolet telescope left on the Moon by the Apollo 16 astronauts in 1972.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">NOAA&#8217;s newest space weather observatory will be pushed into full-time, around-the-clock forecasting service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It will keep tabs on the Sun&#8217;s activity and measure the solar wind to help keep Earth safe from threatening flares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Officials expect NASA&#8217;s satellites to be in position and operational by the beginning of next year, and NOAA&#8217;s spacecraft by spring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">NASA is kicking in more than $US879 million for its two missions, while NOAA&#8217;s share is $US693 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-07\/nasa-to-fast-track-efforts-to-put-nuclear-reactor-on-the-moon\/105616682\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA to fast-track efforts to put nuclear reactor on the Moon<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">It comes just three months after China and Russia announced they were considering a joint effort to also put a nuclear power station on the Moon in a new race for space dominance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While NASA already has a fleet of Sun-observing spacecraft, science mission chief Nicky Fox said these newer missions offer more advanced instruments that will provide more sensitive measurements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Just being able to put all those together to give us a much, much better view of the Sun,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The goal is to better understand the Sun in order to better protect Earth, according to officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As spectacular as they are, the northern and southern lights will not be the missions&#8217;
