The Golden Bachelor<\/a> has returned with its sophomore season, welcoming retired NFL linebacker Mel Owens<\/a> as the lead.<\/p>\n

Owens, 66, who played nine seasons for the Los Angeles Rams<\/a> before going into law, kicked off his Golden Bachelor journey on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

During the premiere episode, he was introduced to 23 senior-aged women<\/a>, all of whom are also in search of a second chance at love.<\/p>\n

The retired NFL<\/a> player-turned-sports injury lawyer was married to his first love for years. Together, they welcomed two sons before they got divorced in 2020. Owens has since focused on raising his sons and coaching their extracurricular sports teams.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, after several years as a devoted dad, Owens is ready to rediscover a love rooted in the simple joys of companionship \u2014 sharing life\u2019s everyday moments, making plans for the future, and growing stronger together as a couple,\u201d his official bio reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the Golden Bachelor, he\u2019s eager to meet someone who shares this vision and finally find that perfect teammate he\u2019s been waiting for in his golden years.\u201d<\/p>\n

In June, Owens faced backlash for controversial remarks<\/a> he made about his dating preference, stating that he would be eliminating any woman over the age of 60. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf they\u2019re 60 or over, I\u2019m cutting them,\u201d he said on the In the Trenches podcast in June, while adding that he specifically told the producers of the ABC reality dating show<\/a> he only wanted women who were between the ages of 45 to 60. \u201cJust being honest,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor,\u201d Owens continued. \u201cThey\u2019ve got to be fit, because I stay in shape and work out and stuff. And I told [producers] to try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the second hour of the premiere episode, Owens went on a group date with several of the women, in addition to his first one-on-one date with Cheryl, whom he gave a rose. By the end of the evening, he had to choose four more women to send home. <\/p>\n
