Image credit: Beno\u00eet Gougeon \/ UdeM.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/simbad.u-strasbg.fr\/simbad\/sim-id?Ident=L+98-59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">L 98-59<\/a>, also known as TOI-175, TIC 307210830, is an M dwarf about one-third the mass of the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>The system lies approximately 34.5 light-years away in the southern constellation of Volans.<\/p>\n<p>It features three transiting exoplanets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sci.news\/astronomy\/tess-three-terrestrial-size-exoplanets-07341.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">identified<\/a> by TESS in 2019, in compact orbits of 2.25, 3.7, and 7.45 days, with an outer 12.8-day non-transiting planet confirmed in 2021 using ESO\u2019s ESPRESSO spectrograph.<\/p>\n<p>These planets exhibit a diverse range of sizes (0.8-1.6 Earth radii), masses (0.5-3 Earth mases), and likely compositions (Earth-like to possibly water-rich).<\/p>\n<p>In a new study, Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al and Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets astronomer Charles Cadieux and his colleague carefully reanalyzed TESS, ESPRESSO, HARPS and Webb data.<\/p>\n<p>They were able to determine the planets\u2019 sizes and masses with unprecedented precision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe refine the radii of L 98-59b, c, and d to 0.84 Earth radii, 1.33, 1.63, respectively,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also report updated masses of 0.46\u2009Earth masses for L 98-59b, 2 for L 98-59c, and 1.64 for L 98-59d, and a minimum mass of 2.82 for L 98-59e.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The astronomers also confirmed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sci.news\/astronomy\/five-exoplanets-red-dwarf-star-09935.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">existence of a fifth planet<\/a>, L 98-59f, in the star\u2019s habitable zone, where conditions could allow liquid water to exist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinding a temperate planet in such a compact system makes this discovery particularly exciting,\u201d Dr. Cadieux said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt highlights the remarkable diversity of exoplanetary systems and strengthens the case for studying potentially habitable worlds around low-mass stars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese new results paint the most complete picture we\u2019ve ever had of the fascinating L 98-59 system,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a powerful demonstration of what we can achieve by combining data from space telescopes and high-precision instruments on Earth, and it gives us key targets for future atmospheric studies with the NASA\/ESA\/CSA James Webb Space Telescope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The refined measurements reveal nearly perfectly circular orbits for the inner planets, a favorable configuration for future atmospheric detections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith its diversity of rocky worlds and range of planetary compositions, L 98-59 offers a unique laboratory to address some of the field\u2019s most pressing questions: What are super-Earths and sub-Neptunes made of? Do planets form differently around small stars? Can rocky planets around red dwarfs retain atmospheres over time?\u201d said Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al\u2019s Professor Ren\u00e9 Doyon, director of Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets.<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2507.09343\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">paper<\/a> will be published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/journal\/1538-3881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Astronomical Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>_____<\/p>\n<p>Charles Cadieux et al. 2025.
