{"id":169923,"date":"2025-09-26T07:55:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T07:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/169923\/"},"modified":"2025-09-26T07:55:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T07:55:11","slug":"vast-reserves-of-precious-platinum-could-be-hidden-on-the-moon-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/169923\/","title":{"rendered":"Vast Reserves of Precious Platinum Could Be Hidden on The Moon : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The next frontier for precious minerals could be much closer to home than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/nasas-psyche-mission-is-about-to-launch-watch-live\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the asteroid belt<\/a> out past the orbit of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mars\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73083\" data-postid=\"175258\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Mars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A new paper proposes that the minerals borne by these asteroids may have come to us, and are now scattered across thousands of impact craters on  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/moon\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73106\" data-postid=\"175258\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">the Moon<\/a>. There, up to 6,500 impact craters may contain precious platinum-group metals, such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, some 3,400 impact craters may contain water in the form of hydrated minerals \u2013 a crucial molecule for any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/2025-set-to-be-an-exciting-year-for-space-exploration-heres-what-to-expect\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">human exploration<\/a> of our only long-term natural satellite.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-discover-signs-of-water-all-over-the-moons-surface\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scientists Discover Signs of Water All Over The Moon&#8217;s Surface<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These values are one to two orders of magnitude larger than the number of ore-bearing near-Earth asteroids estimated by <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.pss.2013.11.008\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elvis (2014)<\/a>,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.pss.2025.106129\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">writes a team<\/a> led by independent astronomer <a href=\"https:\/\/jayanthchennamangalam.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jayanth Chennamangalam<\/a>, &#8220;implying that it may be more advantageous, and hence more profitable, to mine asteroids that have impacted the Moon rather than the ones that are in orbit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/PsychAsterioid_Illustration-e1697158366127.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"486\" class=\"size-full wp-image-108847\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The 226-kilometer (140-mile) wide  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/asteroid\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73095\" data-postid=\"175258\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">asteroid<\/a> Psyche, which lies in the main asteroid belt between Mars and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-weirdest-facts-about-jupiter\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73113\" data-postid=\"175258\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Jupiter<\/a>. It&#8217;s thought to be hugely rich in metal. (<a href=\"https:\/\/images.nasa.gov\/details\/PIA24471\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Rubin\/NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/ASU<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/hir.harvard.edu\/economics-of-the-stars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">numerous potential benefits<\/a> to mining in space. Earth&#8217;s resources are finite, for one: There&#8217;s only so much accessible metal in our planet&#8217;s crust. Mining is also often quite destructive, damaging land and habitats, and generating tremendous amounts of pollution.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, mining in space has benefits for space exploration; having access to water on the Moon, for example, would help mitigate the challenges of either transporting water from Earth, or recycling it in situ.<\/p>\n<p>Many asteroids are believed to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/are-asteroids-really-worth-a-fortune-heres-what-we-know\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rich in precious metals<\/a>, specifically the platinum group metals, which possess properties that make them highly prized for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thermofisher.com\/blog\/metals\/what-are-the-platinum-group-metals-and-why-do-they-matter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">industrial and medical applications<\/a>, but are rare. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/how-asteroid-mining-might-dictate-our-future-in-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid mining<\/a> presents its own challenges, even aside from the astronomical (cough) cost.<\/p>\n<p>Near-Earth asteroids are pretty scarce. They&#8217;re also very complicated to reach, and tumble in space in ways that make them difficult to navigate. The Moon, by contrast, just hangs out in Earth orbit at a predictable distance, with the same side facing us always. That <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/almost-half-of-moon-missions-fail-why-is-space-still-so-hard-211914\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">doesn&#8217;t mean the Moon is easy<\/a>; but it&#8217;s a darn sight easier than an asteroid.<\/p>\n<p>The big question that presents itself is, then: Does the Moon have the platinum group metals and water that we need? Chennamangalam and his colleague embarked on a survey of asteroid impact craters to find out.<\/p>\n<p>Certain <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/M-type_asteroid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">metallic-type asteroids<\/a> are thought to be rich in metals, including the platinum group. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C-type_asteroid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carbonaceous asteroids<\/a> are thought to be rich in hydrated minerals.<\/p>\n<p>When an asteroid smacks into the Moon, some of it vaporizes, but <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.pss.2024.105905\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent evidence suggests<\/a> that significant portions of the asteroid body can survive under certain conditions. For particularly large, complex craters, the debris is <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/ngeo1828\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">swept into the center of the crater<\/a>, where it forms a central peak.<\/p>\n<p>By counting the large craters that could be the result of an impact by these asteroids, the researchers estimate that there could be quite a lot of valuable metal lurking on the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>Even factoring in that much of an asteroid may not survive an impact, especially for hydrated bodies that lose water to heat, the statistical estimates still ran into the thousands of craters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758873311_528_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Up to 6,500 craters larger than 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) across could contain platinum group metals, although the ore might be finely dispersed through the lunar regolith and difficult to access. If the search is narrowed down to craters larger than 19 kilometers across with a well-defined central peak where the ore is likely concentrated, the number drops to 38.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, up to 3,350 craters larger than 1 kilometer could have water, narrowed down to 20 larger than 19 kilometers with concentrated deposits. This means the Moon represents a statistically richer hunting ground for platinum-group metals than near-Earth asteroids.<\/p>\n<p>It may still be that asteroid mining is in humanity&#8217;s future. However, the Moon appears to represent a more achievable and practical stepping stone towards that goal.
