On a closely watched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sca.isr.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">University of Michigan index<\/a>, consumer sentiment sagged to 55.4 in September, down from 70.1 a year ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Economic anxiety runs &#8220;particularly strong among lower- and middle-income consumers,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/src.isr.umich.edu\/research\/faculty-profiles\/profiles\/joanne-hsu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Joanne Hsu<\/a>, director of the Michigan surveys.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another index of consumer sentiment, measured daily by Morning Consult, shows that middle-class consumer confidence fell off a cliff this summer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Higher-income Americans (earning more than $100,000 a year) have held relatively positive views on the economy all year, the Morning Consult survey shows. Lower-income consumers (earning under $50,000) have consistently held more negative views.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Middle-income Americans, earning between $50,000 and $100,000, were tracking the buoyant sentiments of high earners through most of the year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But in June, middle-class confidence gave out. The index for middle-income earners slipped from a peak of 113.2 to a low of 99.5 in that month. (A score of 100 would signal neutral feelings on the economy.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As of Sept. 15, the index sat at 98.7 for middle-income consumers, 121.5 for upper-income spenders, and 86.9 for low-income households.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a big spike in confidence in the spring of this year among the middle class, and then it fell back down,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/uca.edu\/acre\/jeremy-horpedahl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jeremy Horpedahl<\/a>, an economist at the University of Central Arkansas and adjunct scholar at the libertarian Cato Institute.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Middle-income Americans are feeling the pinch<\/p>\n<p>Heading into autumn, big retailers report middle-class shoppers are combing bargain bins and hitting the checkout aisle with lighter carts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an August <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4815726-walmart-inc-wmt-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">earnings call<\/a>, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon spoke of seeing &#8220;more adjustments&#8221; in spending &#8220;in middle- and lower-income households&#8221; than among higher-income consumers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In another <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/KSS\/earnings\/KSS-Q2-2026-earnings_call-351588.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">earnings call<\/a>, Kohl\u2019s interim CEO Michael Bender reported that &#8220;our lower- to middle-income customers remain the most challenged,&#8221; trading down to cheaper wares, &#8220;while our higher-income customers have proven to be more resilient.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The same headwinds are driving more middle-income consumers to dollar stores, a trend noted by Dollar General&#8217;s CEO in a late-August <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/DG\/earnings\/DG-Q2-2026-earnings_call-343348.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">call<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What, exactly, about the economy is unnerving the middle class? Is it inflation, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/economy\/2025\/09\/11\/inflation-stays-cool-fed-rate-cut\/86074578007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">accelerated again this summer<\/a> after punishing consumers for the past three years? Is it President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/\" data-autotag=\"26f031d1-9924-4f10-b4e6-019d076113d5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2025\/09\/17\/what-to-expect-supreme-court-trump-tariffs\/86075784007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">tariff campaign<\/a>, which threatens to push prices higher still? Is it the nation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2025\/09\/05\/august-jobs-report-data\/85984708007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">softening job market<\/a>?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All of those factors may be to blame, economists say.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can\u2019t put your finger on one thing,&#8221; said Ryan Sweet, chief U.S. economist at Oxford Economics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump pledged a golden era for the middle class<\/p>\n<p>On the campaign trail last year, candidate Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/19\/us\/politics\/trump-rnc-speech-transcript.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">vowed<\/a>, &#8220;Under my plan, incomes will skyrocket, inflation will vanish completely, jobs will come roaring back, and the middle class will prosper like never, ever before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Several months into Trump\u2019s second presidency, inflation-adjusted wages <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/LES1252881600Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">are lower<\/a> than they were five years ago. Inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/grocery\/2025\/09\/23\/why-grocery-prices-going-up\/86296793007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">endures<\/a>. Unemployment is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/charts\/employment-situation\/civilian-unemployment-rate.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">drifting up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite those economic setbacks, upper-income Americans are flourishing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The top 10% of earners now account for more than 49% of all consumer spending, the highest level in decades of data, according to an analysis by Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody\u2019s Analytics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Top earners are &#8220;benefiting enormously from the runup in asset values,&#8221; Zandi said. From the stock market to real estate prices: &#8220;You name it, everything\u2019s up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Middle-income households are earning money on the stock market, too. But they own a lot less of it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A huge percentage of Americans aren\u2019t in the market at all,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/groundworkcollaborative.org\/person\/lindsay-owens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lindsay Owens<\/a>, executive director of the Groundwork Collaborative, a progressive think tank.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Increasingly we have this two-tiered economy, where the very top earners, the very top households, are just doing gangbusters,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And increasingly, the rest of the country looks more and more similar to each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Upper-income Americans are prospering, everyone else, not so much<\/p>\n<p>Upper-income Americans have reaped most of the rewards from rising stock and real estate values. The wealthiest 10% of Americans own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/research\/how-many-americans-own-stock\/#:~:text=Stock%20ownership%20by%20level%20of%20wealth,-While%20more%20than&amp;text=The%20wealthiest%201%25%20holds%2050,a%20value%20of%20%2457.9%20trillion.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">nearly 90% of the stocks<\/a>, according to a Motley Fool analysis. The wealthiest 1% command enough wealth to buy nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wealthy-aggregate-value-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">every home in America<\/a>, Redfin reports.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many middle-income consumers own homes and have shared the spoils from rising property values, Zandi said. But their incomes and spending &#8220;have barely kept pace with inflation since the pandemic,&#8221; he said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Middle-class Americans saved money at historic rates in the early pandemic years, <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/PSAVERT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">federal data show<\/a>. Since then, however, middle-income households &#8220;have blown through their excess savings, and then some,&#8221; Zandi said, to cover rising prices and debt payments such as &#8220;credit cards, auto loans, even student loans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Middle-income families are more dependent on a strong labor market than wealthier Americans, the economists said. And right now, many Americans are worried about their jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Employers added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2025\/09\/05\/august-jobs-report-data\/85984708007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">only 22,000 jobs in August<\/a>. Revised numbers showed the economy shed 13,000 jobs in June, the first losses since 2020. Unemployment stands at 4.3%, the highest rate since October 2021.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think what we\u2019re seeing is, the number of job openings is falling steadily,&#8221; Horpedahl said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The nation\u2019s economy increasingly relies on upper-income consumers. Their spending hinges, in part, on a healthy stock market.
