Pironi and his closest challengers \u2013 John Watson, <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiQWxhaW4gUHJvc3RfbGlua19jbGlja2VkIiwiY2xpY2tUZXh0Ijp0cnVlLCJwYXRoIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZm9ybXVsYTEuY29tL2VuL2luZm9ybWF0aW9uL2RyaXZlcnMtaGFsbC1vZi1mYW1lLWFsYWluLXByb3N0LjZ4a29tY3FrUkw1SzBIZ21QWDR6QUgiLCJwYXRoVHlwZSI6ImludGVybmFsIn0=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/information\/drivers-hall-of-fame-alain-prost.6xkomcqkRL5K0HgmPX4zAH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alain Prost<\/a> and Lauda \u2013 had each scored two victories, but Rosberg had not yet claimed a win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">However, when Pironi sustained injuries in a crash at the German Grand Prix that ultimately brought his F1 career to an end, Rosberg found himself closing in on the title battle. Having broken his duck by winning at Dijon, he entered the season finale with a nine-point advantage over closest challenger Watson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">While Watson finished the Caesars Palace Grand Prix in second place, Rosberg\u2019s fifth was all the Finn needed to earn him his sole drivers\u2019 title.<\/p>\n<p>2007 \u2013 Kimi Raikkonen<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">One of the most memorable championship turnarounds came in 2007, a campaign known for the tense intra-team fight that unfolded at McLaren between rookie <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiTGV3aXMgSGFtaWx0b25fbGlua19jbGlja2VkIiwiY2xpY2tUZXh0Ijp0cnVlLCJwYXRoIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZm9ybXVsYTEuY29tL2VuL2RyaXZlcnMvbGV3aXMtaGFtaWx0b24iLCJwYXRoVHlwZSI6ImludGVybmFsIn0=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/drivers\/lewis-hamilton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lewis Hamilton<\/a> and two-time World Champion <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiRmVybmFuZG8gQWxvbnNvX2xpbmtfY2xpY2tlZCIsImNsaWNrVGV4dCI6dHJ1ZSwicGF0aCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmZvcm11bGExLmNvbS9lbi9kcml2ZXJzL2Zlcm5hbmRvLWFsb25zbyIsInBhdGhUeXBlIjoiaW50ZXJuYWwifQ==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/drivers\/fernando-alonso\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fernando Alonso<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Hamilton was at the head of the standings with five rounds remaining on 84 points, five clear of Alonso and 15 ahead of third-placed <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiRmVsaXBlIE1hc3NhX2xpbmtfY2xpY2tlZCIsImNsaWNrVGV4dCI6dHJ1ZSwicGF0aCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmZvcm11bGExLmNvbS9lbi9sYXRlc3QvdGFncy9mZWxpcGUtbWFzc2EuN0c4UlQ2cUNPY0dTOGFRa3d3dXVpYSIsInBhdGhUeXBlIjoiaW50ZXJuYWwifQ==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/tags\/felipe-massa.7G8RT6qCOcGS8aQkwwuuia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Felipe Massa<\/a>. Back in fourth was <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiS2ltaSBSYWlra29uZW5fbGlua19jbGlja2VkIiwiY2xpY2tUZXh0Ijp0cnVlLCJwYXRoIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZm9ybXVsYTEuY29tL2VuL2luZm9ybWF0aW9uL2RyaXZlcnMtaGFsbC1vZi1mYW1lLWtpbWktcmFpa2tvbmVuLjRZa2R0OVU3NmdXTzQwY05iamFNWGYiLCJwYXRoVHlwZSI6ImludGVybmFsIn0=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/information\/drivers-hall-of-fame-kimi-raikkonen.4Ykdt9U76gWO40cNbjaMXf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kimi Raikkonen<\/a> on 68 points, the Finn having so far claimed three victories in his debut season for Ferrari.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">While another win in Belgium helped Raikkonen to close in, Hamilton and Alonso were still ahead with two races to go. But when Hamilton suffered his first F1 retirement at the penultimate round in China \u2013 having become beached in the gravel at the pit entrance in wet conditions \u2013 Raikkonen took victory and put himself only seven points behind Hamilton in the title race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">The driver known as \u2018The Iceman\u2019 went on to win again at the season-closing Brazilian Grand Prix, with Alonso and Hamilton back in third and seventh respectively. This enabled Raikkonen to take the championship by just one point from the McLaren pair.<\/p>\n<p>2012 \u2013 Sebastian Vettel<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">A man who knows all about title comebacks is <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiU2ViYXN0aWFuIFZldHRlbF9saW5rX2NsaWNrZWQiLCJjbGlja1RleHQiOnRydWUsInBhdGgiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5mb3JtdWxhMS5jb20vZW4vbGF0ZXN0L3RhZ3Mvc2ViYXN0aWFuLXZldHRlbC4xcFQ2SkFCdm9VU2MyZ1FNdWFZQzBRIiwicGF0aFR5cGUiOiJpbnRlcm5hbCJ9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/tags\/sebastian-vettel.1pT6JABvoUSc2gQMuaYC0Q\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sebastian Vettel<\/a>, whose first championship in 2010 \u2013 a year that also witnessed a change in the points-scoring system, with 25 now awarded for a win \u2013 saw him overturn Hamilton\u2019s earlier advantage and take his debut title by just four points from Alonso.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">But in terms of bouncing back in particularly dramatic style, the 2012 season was especially memorable. An eventful start to the campaign saw a different driver take victory at each of the opening seven races, with one of these claimed by Vettel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Alonso, meanwhile, went on to build a lead in the championship and, with eight races remaining, held 164 points to Vettel\u2019s 140. The German then bolstered his challenge by embarking on a run of four consecutive wins in the latter part of the season, meaning that he led Alonso by 13 points entering into the finale in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">That advantage looked to have evaporated just a few moments into the race, with Vettel dropping to the back of the field following a first-lap incident with Bruno Senna. Despite sustaining damage to his car \u2013 and enduring a lengthy pit stop amid the arrival of rain \u2013 the Red Bull driver ultimately crossed the line in sixth, enough to beat second-placed Alonso to the title by three points.<\/p>\n<p>2014 \u2013 Lewis Hamilton<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">While it may not be the biggest comeback numbers-wise, the battle for the 2014 championship was a noteworthy one; as well as witnessing a dramatic turnaround from Hamilton, it also marked the first year of what would become a fierce intra-team rivalry between the Briton and Mercedes team mate <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiTmljbyBSb3NiZXJnX2xpbmtfY2xpY2tlZCIsImNsaWNrVGV4dCI6dHJ1ZSwicGF0aCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmZvcm11bGExLmNvbS9lbi9pbmZvcm1hdGlvbi9kcml2ZXJzLWhhbGwtb2YtZmFtZS1uaWNvLXJvc2JlcmcuN3J5em9VWEtyeHFobGNObFhFVWFUZiIsInBhdGhUeXBlIjoiaW50ZXJuYWwifQ==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/information\/drivers-hall-of-fame-nico-rosberg.7ryzoUXKrxqhlcNlXEUaTf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nico Rosberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Hamilton had initially enjoyed the better start of the Mercedes duo, winning four of the five opening races, but Rosberg took momentum \u2013 and the championship lead \u2013 with victory in Monaco.
