Artemi Panarin (Credit: Getty Images) The New York Rangers and Artemi Panarin may soon face a defining decision. Panarin, the team’s leading earner, has just one season left on his deal. Management is said to have raised the idea of a smaller contract extension, allowing more flexibility for the upcoming summer. While no agreement is close, the talks highlight the balancing act between loyalty and long-term planning.

Artemi Panarin faces pay cut talks with the New York Rangers

Artemi Panarin currently earns $11.643 million annually, the highest on the Rangers roster. His deal ends after this season, leaving questions about how the team will handle its star winger, who turns 34 in October.NHL insider Elliotte Friedman noted on his “32 Thoughts” podcast that the Rangers have already floated the idea of Panarin following the example of Anze Kopitar, who accepted less money to help the Los Angeles Kings stay competitive. The Rangers have not confirmed any formal negotiations, but the possibility has raised speculation across the league. For Panarin, the decision is not simple. He remains one of New York’s most productive players, but his age and contract size make him a key figure in the team’s future planning.

Rising salary cap and free agency decisions ahead

The NHL’s salary cap is scheduled to rise from $95.5 million in 2025–26 to $104 million in 2026–27. That increase opens room for major signings, and the summer of 2026 could feature one of the most notable free agent classes in years. For the Rangers, having cap flexibility could allow them to pursue one of these stars. Asking Panarin to take less would give them more room to maneuver, but it risks testing the relationship between player and management.

Comparisons to Anze Kopitar’s Los Angeles Kings contract

The Rangers’ approach echoes the situation with Anze Kopitar and the Los Angeles Kings. In 2023, Kopitar signed a two-year, $14 million extension, a deal that provided the Kings with flexibility while allowing him to finish his career on a team-friendly contract. For now, no decisions have been made. The Rangers appear content to wait and keep their options open. But as the season progresses, the question of Panarin’s future will only grow more pressing. Also Read: NHL star Connor McDavid’s wife, Lauren Kyle, opens her cottage retreat

Artemi Panarin (Credit: Getty Images) The New York Rangers and Artemi Panarin may soon face a defining decision.…

[556
59624,54990,64,63,36456,112275,7526,3617,575,112274,25172,3919,85,51010
post-172211","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nhl","tag-anze-kopitar","tag-artemi-panarin","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-cristiano-ronaldo","tag-cristiano-ronaldos","tag-los-angeles-kings","tag-new-york-rangers","tag-nhl","tag-nhl-trade-update","tag-pay-cut","tag-rangers","tag-sports","tag-wayne-rooney
["GET
