It’s brave. But whether it’s enough to beat Australia in their own backyard is another question entirely.

The headline is the pace attack. England are bringing six quicks: Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue and Matthew Potts. That is as hostile and varied a group as they’ve taken to Australia in years.

On paper, it’s an attack designed to hit hard, bowl fast, and rattle Australian batting line-ups that have often looked more comfortable against traditional English swing in Australian conditions than genuine heat.

But here lies the problem: fitness. Archer is returning again from injury, Wood is only just back from surgery, and spinner Shoaib Bashir has had his lay-offs too.

It’s one thing to unleash a 150kmh rocket in Perth on day one; it’s another to be doing it in Sydney six weeks later when the series is still alive. England’s plan looks good in a press release but it’s fragile if bodies don’t hold up. That’s the reality of high-risk selections.

And there is a difference between just being able to bowl fast, and having aggression and intent when you bowl fast. We have seen it on occasions with Archer way back in 2019 at Lords for a spell to Steve Smith and Wood has done it on a few occasions.

Maybe England’s plan is to rotate this bowling unit, so they are as fresh as possible each Test match. Maybe they are just concerned Wood and Archer won’t hold up for the series. Time will tell.

Just as eye-catching as the bowlers was the leadership change. Harry Brook is now vice-captain, a sign of where England see their long-term future. Ollie Pope has been stripped of that role, though he remains in the squad and likely in the XI.

This has divided opinion. We could argue it destabilises Pope, or it may let Pope, who was touted to be the next Ian Bell, to just focus on his batting. It may work, but this is an early sign that leadership is not yet settled.

What it does show is that Rob Key and the selectors are not afraid to make bold calls so close to the most historical series in Test cricket.

Brook’s elevation is fascinating. He’s talented, fearless, and very much a product of the Brendon McCullum era. Giving him responsibility could either sharpen his focus or burden him.

For all the noise around the bowlers, it’s the batting that might define this series. England’s lineup — Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Brook, Pope, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett — has experience.

But Australian conditions are a different beast. Pace, bounce, the heat, crowds, and relentless discipline are what they will face from Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland.

This is where England’s much talked about ‘Bazball’ philosophy meets its biggest test. Aggression worked at home, and it even worked in bursts away. But Australia, with the Ashes on the line, are a different challenge.

Camera IconJofra Archer of England celebrates. Credit: Philip Brown/Getty Images

It will be interesting to see how that method goes in the first two Tests. It might pay off, and that will excite English fans seeing a big total in a day’s play, but when it goes horribly wrong and you’re down 2-0 in a series, it will be interesting to see if the same “courageous” tactics are employed for the rest of the series.

The question ahead of this summer isn’t whether England can score runs. They can. It’s whether they can score them when it’s tough, when the ball is new and moving, and when the series is on the line.

In recent tours, England’s top order has been exposed early and left the middle order to salvage things. If that happens again, the result won’t change.

We can’t ignore the numbers: England haven’t won an Ashes series in Australia since 2010/11. Under Stokes and McCullum, they’ve made bold strides in reshaping their approach. If you’re an English fan, they’ve been fun to watch (when it comes off), fearless, and unpredictable.

But they haven’t yet won a series away against a top-tier opponent. That is the weight they carry into this tour.

The flip side is that Australia aren’t without flaws. Their own squad has ageing stars, injury worries, and depth questions. This Ashes series is shaping up as a battle between two imperfect teams.

England’s squad for the 2025/26 Ashes is bold, more aggressive than we’ve seen in bowling terms, and loaded with potential. It’s also fragile, untested in parts, and reliant on players staying fit, as well as the continued output of a few veterans, notably Stokes and Root. In short, it mirrors the current England set-up: exciting but high-risk.

If everything clicks — if Archer and Wood stay fit, if Brook grows into leadership, if Root anchors and Stokes inspires — England give themselves a chance in Australia.

But history tells us that things rarely all go to plan on an Ashes tour. This squad is a gamble, and we’re about to find out whether it pays off.

It doesn’t matter which way you spin it, England’s announcement of their 16-man squad for the Ashes has…

[564
64,63,740,588,85
0":"post-173402","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-cricket","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-cricket","11":"tag-sport","12":"tag-sports
["GET
