Ange Postecoglou<\/a> remains winless after five games in charge of Nottingham Forest after a controversial free kick proved decisive in a 1-0 Premier League<\/a> loss to Sunderland on Sunday (AEST).<\/p>\n

Omar Alderete scored the winner in the 38th minute<\/a> as the big Paraguayan centre back was unforgivably allowed to ghost towards the far post and head in the set-piece goal at Nottingham’s City Ground.<\/p>\n

It came after referee Tony Harrington yellow-carded Nico Dominguez for simulation after the Forest midfielder fell theatrically following a challenge with Trai Hume on the edge of his penalty area.<\/p>\n

Football’s new home, Stan Sport<\/a>, is the only place to watch the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, WSL, European World Cup qualifiers, J.League, NSWL and K League<\/p>\n

“It was a really poor goal we conceded, albeit after a poor decision, I thought, from the official. But it was a really poor goal and we had plenty of time to rectify that,” Postecoglou said.<\/p>\n

“It was a whole range of decisions from the officials, from awarding and then some holding in the box. But I still think we were way too lax in our determination to keep the ball out of the net.<\/p>\n

“I just thought it was a really disappointing goal to concede.”<\/p>\n

Postecoglou was then asked directly if he felt Dominguez had taken a dive.<\/p>\n

“I just thought play on, play on. But that’s the referee’s decision,” he replied.<\/p>\n

“There’s nothing to say to him (Dominguez). I didn’t think there was anything in it. Irrespective, even if the referee has made an absolute howler, we can still deal with the free kick better. We have to park that to one side. What we did after that is more of a concern to me than the decision.”<\/p>\n

Forest kept pounding away and had 22 shots on goal but Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs held firm.<\/p>\n

The loss left Forest floundering in 16th of 20 Premier League teams.<\/p>\n

Since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo at the helm, Postecoglou has lost two league games and drawn one.<\/p>\n

He has also been knocked out of the EFL Cup by Championship club Swansea City and drawn 1-1 away to Real Betis in the Europa League.<\/p>\n

Next up is a home European clash with Danish club Midtjylland on Friday (AEST).<\/p>\n

“Frustrating. Disappointing. It’s another game we have allowed to get away from us, where really we should be very comfortably overcoming. We controlled the game pretty well,” Postecoglou said.<\/p>\n

“We certainly created enough opportunities in the second half. But at the moment, we’re not ruthless enough in terms of taking advantage of the dominance we have and turning it into wins, rather than what’s happened in the last four or five games.”<\/p>\n

Sunderland are only six games into their first Premier League campaign in nearly a decade but now have almost half the total amount of points they managed when they were relegated in 2017.<\/p>\n

Regis Le Bris’s side were among the favourites for the drop after returning to the top flight following a playoff victory over Sheffield United in May.<\/p>\n

But under the Frenchman’s watchful eye they have been the surprise package of the season so far, winning three and drawing two of their opening six games to move into the top four with 11 points.<\/p>\n

In 2016-17 they managed 24 and finished rock bottom.<\/p>\n

“It was good to win because it wasn’t an easy challenge,” Le Bris said.<\/p>\n

“It was our first away win in the league, so I’m really proud of our fans and our squad because we worked hard.”<\/p>\n

Sunderland mounted a staunch rearguard action as Forest laid siege to their goal.<\/p>\n

“They have many threats and are really good on the ball,” Le Bris said.<\/p>\n

“After we scored the first goal their substitutions added five more attackers, but we expected that. We defended well with the back five.<\/p>\n

“The players were well connected, they worked hard, and we had a good goalkeeper.”<\/p>\n

While Sunderland’s fans are pinching themselves at seeing their side so high in the standings, Forest’s might be scratching their heads at events at their club this season.<\/p>\n

They began the season solidly enough but Nuno, who guided them back into Europe with a seventh-placed finish last season, was sacked after a public fallout with owner Evangelos Marinakis.<\/p>\n

“Really disappointing goal to concede and we don’t take our chances and that means we don’t get the result we wanted,” Postecoglou said.<\/p>\n
