(ABC News: Courtney Withers)

He said the new money would go towards the oncology unit, which was announced in June at a cost to WA taxpayers of $21 million, plus $9 million from the Commonwealth.

However, it was revealed today the total cost had blown out to $38.5 million, meaning WA taxpayers will pay an extra $8.5 million.

Mr Carey batted off questions about whether the state government had deliberately underestimated health infrastructure costs.

“No — because we do business cases, we take the advice at the time … and then the market can say something different,” he said

Ambulance ramping record

The funding boost will bring WA’s total spend on hospital infrastructure to $3.7 billion over the next four years, which Mr Carey said would bring a total of 900 hospital beds online.

It comes after a tumultuous winter season which saw another record-high in ambulance ramping.

Ambulances spent 7,074 hours waiting with patients on board outside hospitals due to a lack of beds in August.

The record came despite the Health Department rescheduling elective surgeries that month to alleviate pressure on public hospitals.

Ambulance ramping hours reached a new high over winter. (ABC News: Courtney Withers)

Australian Medical Association WA branch president Dr Kyle Hoath said the funding boost was a good outcome.

“We’re still 1,800 beds short, now, so 900 beds is a really good step in the right direction. Would love to know when those beds are coming, and would love to see some immediate injection of capacity before next winter,” he said.

“We can’t afford to have another winter like we had.”

Dr Hoath said he was not concerned about whether the $500 million was being used to fund new infrastructure, or cost blowouts to projects already in the pipeline.

“The flexibility to be able to spend some of this money on capital works that we can’t anticipate, as we saw with Charlie’s and Royal Perth through our winter, is important for the government to have at their disposal,” he said.

Mr Carey said the investment would bring 900 beds online over the next four years. (ABC News: Keane Bourke)

WA Opposition leader Basil Zempilas said while he welcomed the funding package, it was an indication the state government had not adequately prioritised the health system.

“Today’s announcement is an admission that this state government have badly had their eye off the health ball.”

Mr Carey said the state’s health system was undergoing “major transformation”, including projects in Laverton, Mullewa, Bunbury, Geraldton, mental health services in WA’s north, and a new women and babies hospital in Perth at the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct.

Treasurer and acting Premier Rita Saffioti said the health infrastructure fund came as a result of “better than expected” state finances.

“We are anticipating significant, better position in relation to both the operating surplus and our net debt position,” she said.

“We are in a position now to allocate $500 million to a fund, that fund will support the rollout of our existing commitments and also make sure we can move quickly to support new projects.”

Loading…Loading

Half a billion dollars will be poured into bolstering the state’s health infrastructure as the WA government attempts…

[34
6905,64,63,1348,137,59217,500,17726,86,148,45,9570
post-175825","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-healthcare","tag-abc-news","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-breaking-news","tag-health","tag-health-crisis","tag-healthcare","tag-perth-breaking-news","tag-perth-news","tag-wa-health","tag-wa-news","tag-wa-politics
["GET
