Police are responding to an incident in Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall following a pursuit through the CBD this afternoon.<\/p>\n
Victoria Police said in a statement that a number of people had been arrested.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We will provide further information when it comes to hand but there have been no injuries during the incident and there is no threat to the community,” a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
Vision of the mall showed a white BMW with partially shattered front and rear windshields parked over the tram tracks that run through the shopping strip.<\/p>\n
A number of people were also gathered in the street.<\/p>\n
A witness has told the ABC he had just finished lunch at a restaurant on the corner of Bourke and Swanston Streets when he saw a white BMW driving down the mall \u2014 a pedestrian and tram area \u2014 at about 50 to 60 kilometres an hour.<\/p>\n
“Then as we turned the corner we noticed police cars were coming down as well,” the witness, Vince Galasso, said.<\/p>\n

“As we were approaching and got near the car we saw that police were coming [the other] way as well.<\/p>\n
“They were coming from every direction.”<\/p>\n
He said he then saw police officers run into Myer carrying firearms.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Yarra Trams said the route 86 and 96 trams were being diverted away from Bourke Street Mall due to the “emergency services request”.\u00a0<\/p>\n
