A controversial social media post from Geelong star Bailey Smith has drawn the ire of Mitch Brown, who has called it homophobic.<\/p>\n

Brown, the first AFL player to publicly reveal he is bisexual<\/a>, was unimpressed after Smith made a series of Instagram posts from the Cats’ Mad Monday function.<\/p>\n

One of the posts featured Smith and captain Patrick Dangerfield hugging, with Smith referencing Brokeback Mountain in a caption.<\/p>\n

Smith had dressed as Brad Pitt in the movie Legends of the Fall, while Dangerfield had dressed as a cowboy from the TV show Yellowstone. There is no suggestion the players came to the event dressed as Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal’s characters from Brokeback Mountain.<\/p>\n

“Or brokeback mountain depends how ya look at it,” Smith posted on the photo of him with Dangerfield.<\/p>\n

Smith added that he was putting away his phone, before two more posts, and then adding that Dangerfield was confiscating his phone for the rest of the day.<\/p>\n

Smith also had to check with Dangerfield at one point to ask who he was dressed as, adding that he had never seen the 1994 western drama.<\/p>\n

Brown first published a picture of deceased Australian actor Heath Ledger, who played one of the lead characters in the movie.<\/p>\n

“Just for the record, Heath Ledger’s way hotter,” Brown joked.<\/p>\n

But then Brown added in a separate post: “In all seriousness though, guys do better.<\/p>\n

“Last time I checked, losing a grand final doesn’t make you gay, but being homophobic definitely makes you a loser.”<\/p>\n

Smith also courted controversy by commenting on Max Holmes’s costume.<\/p>\n

Holmes \u2014 who has previously attended Mad Monday celebrations as journalists Mitch Cleary and Gerard Whateley \u2014 this time came as footy journalist Caroline Wilson, with Smith commenting that Wilson “had never looked better”.<\/p>\n

Mark Blicavs and Irish teammates Mark O’Connor and Cillian Burke also raised eyebrows by attending the celebrations as controversial Irish band Kneecap<\/a>.<\/p>\n
