The West Coast Eagles have been handed an extra first-round draft pick and four additional rookie list spots from the AFL, in a bid to help the ailing club return to competitiveness after four dismal years on field.<\/p>\n

The Eagles, who won the premiership in 2018, have won just 11 games in the past four years, collecting two wooden spoons in that time.<\/p>\n

The AFL announced on Tuesday it would give the Eagles an extra draft pick at the end of the first round, currently pick 19, as well as four extra rookie list spots for the next three seasons.<\/p>\n

AFL football operations boss Greg Swann said the special assistance package was aimed at supporting the club to be competitive again.<\/p>\n

“It is important that we have a competitively balanced competition and that fans can feel that on any day, in any game, their team can win,” Swann said.<\/p>\n

“The Eagles have won only nine games in the past three seasons and finished in the bottom three of the ladder in the past four seasons.<\/p>\n

“We have been working with the club on how assistance can improve their on-field performance to return to being competitive.”<\/p>\n

Swann said the package was structured to assist the club develop their younger talent.<\/p>\n

Eagles CEO Don Pyke thanked the AFL for its assistance.<\/p>\n

Harley Reid re-signs with West Coast<\/a><\/p>\n

Harley Reid has signed a contract extension with the West Coast Eagles, with the club securing his services until the end of the 2028 AFL season.<\/p>\n

“We sincerely appreciate the AFL’s engagement, consideration and approval of the club’s request,” Pyke said.<\/p>\n

“Submitting an assistance request was not a decision we took lightly, and the club accepts and takes responsibility for previous decisions which contributed to our current situation of four successive years of bottom-three finishes.<\/p>\n

“Our submission highlighted factors \u2014 such as the compromised nature of recent national drafts \u2014 that have increased the challenge of rebuilding our playing list, while also considering the broader implications for the competition of sustained poor on-field performance.<\/p>\n

“Equalisation is a core pillar of the AFL and, as such, we believed our club qualified for assistance, which we are committed to using responsibly in alignment with our clear list management strategy to take us forward.”<\/p>\n
