Some HOAs exist to keep neighborhoods pleasant, but as we all know, many act like they\u2019re running a tiny dictatorship instead.<\/p>\n
After receiving an over-the-top complaint<\/a> about a missing basketball net, one homeowner found a clever way to turn the rules against them.<\/p>\n You\u2019ll want to read on for this one!<\/p>\n A few years ago, I lived in a neighborhood with an obnoxious HOA (Home Owners Association).<\/p>\n If you don\u2019t know, these enforce neighborhood rules intended to keep the area \u201cnice.\u201d<\/p>\n Most rules are okay and keep someone from planting a 100 ft flagpole with 20 flags attached and other outrageous stuff.<\/p>\n But his HOA quickly became unreasonable with their requests.<\/p>\n Some of the HOAs have overzealous enforcers that send threatening letters about any little thing.<\/p>\n Have your Christmas wreath on your door on January 3rd? Letter.<\/p>\n I\u2019d had problems with this association 2\u20133 times.<\/p>\n He sets the scene.<\/p>\n The story begins when the basketball net on the goal in the driveway wore through.<\/p>\n The kids ripped it the rest of the way off.<\/p>\n I\u2019d intended to get a new one, but it had been two weeks, and I hadn\u2019t gotten around to it yet.<\/p>\n But the HOA was quick to notice this.<\/p>\n Threatening letter: \u201cYou are violating HOA rules that clearly state your goal must have a net.\u201d<\/p>\n I was impressed there was such a rule, so I looked it up. That is what it said. However, that is all it said.<\/p>\n It didn\u2019t say a \u201cregulation\u201d net, \u201cstandard\u201d net\u2014nothing. It just needed a net.<\/p>\n So he gets to work.<\/p>\n So, I bought five nets. I used zip ties to attach the top of one net to the bottom of another. This created a long, chained-together net that reached the ground (goal was lowered\u2026 kids).<\/p>\n So I hung it up, and there it sat. I was in full compliance with the rules, so there was nothing they could do about it.<\/p>\n Neighbors soon take notice too.<\/p>\n One neighbor asked me about it, and I explained what happened.<\/p>\n She didn\u2019t seem to think it was funny, so I think she must have been the person making the occasional complaints about us.<\/p>\n Anyway, after a month or so, I cut all but one net off.<\/p>\n Never had any HOA letters after that.<\/p>\n Now that\u2019s a slam dunk!<\/p>\n What did Reddit think?<\/p>\n Christmas doesn\u2019t just end on December 25th.<\/p>\n The bigger the net, the better.<\/p>\n This user can\u2019t understand how HOAs hold so much power.<\/p>\n This debacle no doubt inspired the HOA to make clearer rules.<\/p>\n Sometimes you\u2019ve gotta fight nonsense with more nonsense.<\/p>\n If you liked that post, check this one about a guy who got revenge on his condo by making his own Christmas light rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n \n\t\tCategories: STORIES<\/a>\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
