Nothing has been teasing an operating system built for AI and, today, they\u2019re showing that off with \u201cEssential\u201d and it\u2019s\u2026 a lot.<\/p>\n

\u201cEssential\u201d is, by Nothing\u2019s description, a \u201cnew kind of operating system.\u201d The idea is to build something that\u2019s unique to each user, but the full vision for this is a long-term one, and we won\u2019t see the debut until<\/a> the first half of 2027. <\/p>\n

In the meantime, \u201cEssential Apps\u201d are launching on Nothing Phone devices running the Nothing OS skin on top of Android. <\/p>\n

This new feature leverages the newly available \u201cNothing Playground,\u201d where \u201cEssential\u201d will produce custom apps on demand using AI. No coding is needed, just descriptions fed to AI. Once an app is generated, you can add it to your homescreen and start using it.<\/p>\n

That journey starts with the launch of Essential Apps for Nothing devices. Just describe what you need \u2013 \u2018capture the receipts from camera roll, and export a finance-ready PDF every Friday\u2019, \u2018before my calls, show me a one-page brief based on my calendar and message threads\u2019, \u2018create a mood tracker that syncs with a music playlist\u2019\u00a0\u2013 and AI generates an Essential App you can add to your home screen instantly. The destination is a future where your phone shapes itself based on who you are: a personal OS.<\/p>\n

These aren\u2019t \u201capps\u201d though, but rather homescreen widgets.<\/p>\n

The \u201cNothing Playground\u201d is live now<\/a> and some of the initial \u201capp\u201d examples include a flight gate reminder, a date widget, a clock widget, an F1 calendar widget, and one that just has \u201cbig eyes.\u201d The Playground will allow users to create their own widgets or add ones created by other users.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also a limit on how many of these you can use. Nothing Phone (3) running Nothing OS 4.0 (now in beta) supports up to 6 widgets, while all other Nothing Phone models on the same update only support 2 at a time.<\/p>\n
