Wallabies prop James Slipper says the time is right to step away from international rugby union after a career in which he has set several records.<\/p>\n
But Slipper \u2014 who is the most-capped Wallabies player of all time with 150 Test appearances \u2014 will appear for the ACT Brumbies in next year’s Super Rugby Pacific competition.<\/p>\n
He will draw the curtain on his glittering Wallabies career on Saturday night when he lines up in the Bledisloe Cup and Rugby Championship Test against New Zealand in Perth.<\/p>\n
The 36-year-old joined Welsh legend Alun Wyn Jones (171 Tests) and New Zealand’s Sam Whitelock (153 Tests) in becoming just the third player to reach 150 Tests when he ran out in last week’s 33-24 loss to the All Blacks in Auckland.<\/p>\n
Slipper was just 21 when he became the 843rd Wallabies player, making his Test debut off the bench against England at Subiaco Oval in 2010.<\/p>\n
“It feels like the right time for me to step away from Test rugby,” Slipper said in a statement.<\/p>\n
“There’s a number of good young props coming through who will need time in the saddle leading into what’s going to be an unbelievable experience of a home Rugby World Cup in 2027.<\/p>\n
“It will also allow me to spend more quality time with my wife, Kara, and two young daughters, Lily and Ava, which is something that I owe to them after 16 years of full-time professional rugby.<\/p>\n
“As a young kid on the Gold Coast playing backyard footy with my brothers, it was a dream to pull on the gold jersey, and to be able to say I’ve lived my dream for what’s coming on 16 years is more than I could ever have asked for.”<\/p>\n
