Here\u2019s what you should know before trying ironmaxxing.\n<\/p>\n<p>  What Is Ironmaxxing?  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Some TikTok content creators shared iron-rich recipes incorporating foods like kidney beans, carrots, bell peppers, and ground beef to maximize iron absorption.\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cAttempting to increase iron isn&#8217;t a bad thing if we&#8217;re focusing on food first,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kaitlin-hippley\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kaitlin Hippley, MEd, RDN, LD, CDCES<\/a>, a diabetes educator and registered dietitian at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, told Verywell.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> If you want to try ironmaxxing, consider cooking in a cast-iron skillet, which allows small amounts of the mineral to leach into your food, or combining different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/foods-high-iron-5216344\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iron-rich food sources<\/a> in a single meal.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The human body absorbs iron most efficiently from animal sources, known as heme iron. Adult men need 8 milligrams (mg) of iron per day, but adult women need between 18 and 27 mg, depending on their age and pregnancy status.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_28-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Women who are pregnant or have heavy periods or those who have lost a lot of blood from a surgery or an accident have a higher risk of iron deficiency anemia. If you snack on Greek yogurt with iron-rich pumpkin seeds, you can offset absorption issues by adding strawberries for a dose of vitamin C, said Hippley.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_39-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;It&#8217;s going to be impossible to maximize it to the fullest. You have to be realistic,&#8221; she added.\n<\/p>\n<p>  Why Not Just Take Iron Supplements?  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_42-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> People following a plant-based diet may need <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/do-iron-supplements-for-anemia-cause-upset-stomach-3522504\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iron supplements<\/a> to reach recommended intake levels, but they should not start supplementation without medical guidance.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_44-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cIron should never be supplemented without checking blood levels. But supplements can lead to toxicity, especially without testing.
