“Very few people understand why we do what we do.” National Geographic has unveiled the official trailer for a documentary film<\/a> titled Love+War, the next new edge-of-your-seat doc from filmmakers Jimmy Chin & Chai Vasarhelyi. This just premiered at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival and will be released in theaters first in October<\/a>, before its streaming on Disney+ later this fall. Love+War chronicles Pulitzer Prize-winning Lynsey Addario’s ascent in the male-dominated world of conflict photography (aka war photography). But her work is dangerous. She\u2019s been kidnapped twice while on assignment in war zones \u2014 a cost she must wrestle with each time she leaves her husband & sons to go on assignment. Behind the camera, Addario is torn between her unwavering commitment to the essential work of journalism and the powerful, competing demands of motherhood, grappling with what it truly means to follow your calling when it also threatens everything you\u202flove. TIFF adds that the doc film never shies “away from the complexities, contradictions, and feelings of futility that are inherent to war reportage. Addario’s work relies on faith that she\u2019ll capture a powerful image, that news sites will give it prominent placement, and readers will respond.” I really hope so.<\/p>\n

The film profiles Pulitzer Prize\u2013winning photojournalist Lynsey Addario as she risks her life. We follow her on several trips to Ukraine & trace her past two decades in the war zones of Afghanistan, Iraq, Sierra Leone, and Libya \u2014 where she was kidnapped by Gaddafi’s troops \u2014 among others. Photojournalism has long been dominated by adrenaline-chasing men who frequently succumb to addiction, divorce, or death. War correspondent Dexter Filkins observes, ‘Very few people have been able to do that for any sustained period of time without destroying their lives.’ Can Addario forge a different path? That’s a question at the heart of the film. We watch her commute from multi-week trips in combat zones back to her domestic life in London with her two young sons and her journalist husband Paul de Bendern. After an exhausting trip from Ukraine to put her boys to bed, she admits, ‘Kids are so much harder than war.’ Love+War is co-directed by doc filmmakers filmmakers E. Chai Vasarhelyi<\/a> & Jimmy Chin<\/a>, the Oscar-winning directors of the films Meru, Free Solo, The Rescue, Return to Space, Wild Life, Nyad<\/a>, Endurance<\/a>, and Lost in the Jungle<\/a>.
