Users will start seeing notices of the change next week, but it won\u2019t kick in until December 16.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg8ij5wr00073b6nfktzr6rc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta already targets users with ads based on what they post and click on, as well as who they\u2019re connected to, on its social media platforms. That data enables Meta to infer what users might buy. But in conversations with Meta\u2019s chatbot, users could directly tell the company about what they\u2019re shopping for or the trip they\u2019ll soon be packing for or what problems they have that a product could solve.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg8ij5wr00083b6nwst5bes1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The company will also use data from Meta AI to help decide what kinds of content users see on its site.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg8ij5wr00093b6nygbb14n6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta says, for example, that if a user talks to the chatbot about hiking, it will know they\u2019re interested in the sport and serve them more hiking-related content. But the change also ups the pressure on Meta to prevent personal or difficult conversations with the AI \u2014 for example, about a relationship, given how many people now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/18\/health\/chatbot-ai-therapy-risks-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">use chatbots like therapists<\/a> \u2014 from prompting potentially harmful content recommendations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg8ij5wr000a3b6nawswz78c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cJust like other personalized services, we tailor the ads and content you see based on your activity, ensuring that your experience evolves as your interests change,\u201d Meta said in its Wednesday blog post announcing the change. \u201cMany people expect their interactions to make what they see more relevant. Soon, interactions with AIs will be another signal we use to improve people\u2019s experience.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg8ij5wr000b3b6ny2dquzej@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta AI has 1 billion monthly users, according to the company, although it\u2019s not clear how regularly those users engage with it. Users can talk to the chatbot via Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or the standalone Meta AI app.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg8ij5wr000c3b6n10dk3odx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And the company is already raking in huge sums from its advertising business. Last quarter alone, <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.atmeta.com\/investor-news\/press-release-details\/2025\/Meta-Reports-Second-Quarter-2025-Results\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">it earned<\/a> $46.5 billion from advertising revenue, up more than 21% from the same period in the prior year. Meta\u2019s shares (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/META\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">META<\/a>) are up nearly 20% since the start of this year, bringing its market cap to $1.8 trillion as of October 1.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg8ij5wr000d3b6nqe6k2ivt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/26\/tech\/daydream-ai-online-shopping\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some in Silicon Valley believe<\/a> people will increasingly want to do their online shopping via AI chatbots, rather than by searching on Google or scrolling social media. Meta rival OpenAI on Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/buy-it-in-chatgpt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">launched<\/a> the ability for users to buy select items directly through its own chatbot, ChatGPT, although it is not currently an ads-based business.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg8ij5wr000e3b6nkfp9wdgw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta users will still have the option to use its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/109378269482053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cad preferences\u201d tool<\/a> to add or remove topics for targeted ads, and the company offers <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2022\/10\/new-ways-to-customize-your-facebook-feed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">similar features<\/a> for users to control content on their Facebook and Instagram feeds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg8ij5wr000f3b6ne16hra24@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta also said it won\u2019t deliver personalized ads based on conversations with the chatbot regarding religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs or trade union membership, in keeping with its larger policy not to target users based on those categories. (To be clear, Meta still allows ads related to these topics; it just doesn\u2019t target users based on their perceived interest in them.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg8ij5wr000g3b6nfn1paai9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After the company launched its Meta AI app, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/meta-ai-public-discover-feed-warning-fix-personal-info-privacy-2025-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reports emerged<\/a> of users being embarrassed that they\u2019d unwittingly publicly shared personal chats they\u2019d apparently thought were private about relationship issues or finances.
