Queensland’s child safety and domestic violence prevention minister says the death of a mother and her daughter, which police are treating as a murder-suicide, has “shocked” the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Amanda Camm expressed her sympathy to the friends and family of Dr Tiffany Wilkes and her eight-year-old daughter, whose bodies were found at an Airbnb-listed property in Brisbane on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Our government’s sympathy is with her friends and family and I think many across our community were absolutely shocked at this case.”<\/p>\n
Emergency services found the pair after being called to the property at Tinarra Crescent in Kenmore Hills for a welfare check just before 1pm on Monday.<\/p>\n
The ABC understands Dr Wilkes had sent a scheduled email to a colleague which led to the welfare check.<\/p>\n

The ABC understands Dr Wilkes’ daughter was not known to the Department of Child Safety.<\/p>\n
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Department of Education said they were “deeply shocked and saddened by the recent tragic incident in Kenmore Hills”.<\/p>\n
“As the case is under police investigation, the department cannot provide comment.”<\/p>\n

At the time of her death, Dr Wilkes was still employed part-time with Queensland Health as a staff specialist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.<\/p>\n
But a source said she had not worked at the hospital for about 18 months because of mental health issues.<\/p>\n
She listed her specialty interests on her LinkedIn page as liver transplant and neuro-anaesthesia, high risk and critical care anaesthesia, pain medicine, medical education, and research.<\/p>\n
Before starting with Queensland Health in January 2012, she spent more than a year at the Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge in the UK.<\/p>\n
She finished her medical degree with the University of Queensland in 2000 but also had a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts.<\/p>\n

Dr Wilkes was one of about 20 Australians who mentored five Indigenous young people on a trip to Antarctica in 2014.<\/p>\n
Jane Ewing was a mentor on the trip with Dr Wilkes and said while she\u2019d lost contact with her in recent years, she was shocked by the news.<\/p>\n
“I couldn’t have imagined anything like this happening at all.”<\/p>\n
Another participant on the trip, Nicholas Kotrotsos, recalled receiving helpful advice from the doctor.<\/p>\n
“They did polo plunge dives on the trip, and she advised me against it because of my medical history,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A police spokesperson said a report was being prepared for the coroner in relation to the deaths.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to this investigation,” they said in a statement on Thursday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“As this is a coronial matter it would be inappropriate to comment further.”<\/p>\n
Medical body says death of a practitioner can ‘trigger distress’<\/p>\n
Dr Wilkes was listed as an anaesthetist on the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency’s website of registered doctors, but her name was removed following her death.<\/p>\n
Australian Medical Association (AMA) Queensland president Dr Nick Yim said their “hearts go out to family and friends affected by this tragic event”.<\/p>\n
“We know colleagues in the medical community will feel this loss keenly,” he said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Dr Yim said AMA Queensland could not comment about this specific case, and were “aware speculation can be incredibly painful for loved ones”.<\/p>\n

“We know doctors and health professionals experience mental health challenges just like everyone else,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The death of fellow practitioners can trigger distress for those working in our health system.<\/p>\n
