And what should they be demanding in return for their departing stars?

Foxfooty.com.au dives in, with insights from 203-game, 282-goal former Hawthorn sharpshooter Ben Dixon.

Steven King is leading a new era at Melbourne, with as many as four stars set to depart in October.Source: FOX SPORTS

The Demons’ new direction under King’s leadership is bold, but Dixon says the club needs to get through this crucial list management period before making bold calls regarding finals aspirations.

“I think (new chief executive) Paul Guerra coming out and going ‘we want to play finals next year’ — I think that’s all well and good, ambitious, but you need to get Steven King’s feet under the desk and get through a trade period before you can assess where you think your list’s at,” Dixon told Foxfooty.com.au on Thursday.

“You’re going to lose the calibre of Petracca and Oliver, May — I mean, they’re pretty big holes to fill. They don’t just grow on trees, those sorts of players.

“They (those that have sought moves) are looking for a fresh start; that probably tells us a little bit about Melbourne and the communication and the transparency of where their group’s at.

“I think he (Guerra) might’ve gone a bit early on playing finals next year, and where the list’s at, because you haven’t finalised the list yet. It’s about Steven King getting his feet under the desk and assessing where they’re going.

“So, I don’t think your CEO can come out and say that, based on not knowing. It’s great to say you want to play finals, but you’ve got to get a bit granular on the list (in terms of) ‘where we’re going’ and ‘what we’re doing’.”

Merrett to attend B&F amid trade talk | 03:04

Unless there’s a drastic change in circumstances, Petracca will depart Melbourne for Adelaide or Gold Coast in the coming fortnight.

The question the Demons will carefully consider revolves around what sort of deal they’re willing to accept, and whether there’s an associated salary component.

Given the 29-year-old’s hefty salary — having earned approximately $1.2 million this season with four years to run on his deal — they may have to settle for slight unders in any trade, unless they’re willing to take on a portion of the money he’s owed.

If it’s the Crows, a first-round pick — no.14 before matched bids for academy and father-son prospects — and a future second-rounder is believed to be roughly fair value.

But if the Dees were to pay some percentage of Petracca’s salary, there’s every chance they’ll ask for a ready-made player or two in return.

In fact, Dixon is adamant that Melbourne should be hunting mature talent as opposed to draft capital — despite not currently owning a first-round pick at November’s draft.

“If Melbourne and Paul Guerra and the department are coming out and communicating that they’re playing finals next year, they need players, not picks,” said Dixon, who’ll appear on Fox Footy’s Trading Day program over the course of the next fortnight.

“So, you’ve got to trade for players. If you’re going to get rid of the likes of Petracca and Oliver, you’ve got to get something in return that’s going to help you straight away.

“Picks are not going to help you contend and play finals next year — I think that’s evident.”

Petracca deciding between several clubs | 03:41

So, if, hypothetically, Petracca settled on Adelaide as his destination of choice, who should the Demons look to pry out?

“Ben Keays,” Dixon said without hesitation. “Those sorts of guys that fly under the radar.

“And you could get a number of Adelaide players and a pick, or it could be a couple of players and a pick. It’s not something (that’s cut and dry) … but you want guys that are playmakers that are going to help you in multiple positions.

“Ben Keays can play midfield and forward. So, he’s just one example, and we saw what he did this year on output.”

And on the Suns’ side of things, the club is readying capital to use to match early rival bids for Academy pair Zeke Uwland and Dylan Patterson, so they too will hold onto their crown jewel picks — currently holding nos.6, 13 and 16.

Could the Dees hypothetically swoop on one or two of those selections and, say, emerging ball-winner Alex Davies? Or perhaps livewire forward Ben Ainsworth, who hails from Morwell? Neither has indicated a desire to move from the Suns, though.

Geraldton product McVee, meanwhile, has requested a trade to Fremantle and will, in all likelihood, don purple in 2026. So, what’s a reasonable value for the emerging defender?

A reliable user of the footy and potent interceptor who finished seventh in the club’s best and fairest last year, the Demons would surely ask for the Dockers’ first-round choice this November, which currently sits at no.11 but will get pushed back.

But given McVee is out of contract, the Demons have less leverage and may have to settle for, say, Fremantle’s second-rounder — currently no.30 — and a future second-round pick.

Cats apologise for Mad Monday antics | 00:27

Intriguingly, May is contracted for a further season but has been told to explore his options, with Melbourne wanting to give its younger defensive talent more room to develop at senior level.

And given the fact that the Dees have got out on the front foot to push it, a rival club could seemingly get the dual All-Australian for cheap.

Meanwhile, Oliver’s meeting with King on Thursday to discuss his role within the team going forward reportedly didn’t quite go according to plan, with the 28-year-old’s midfield time set to be significantly stripped back under the new coach.

And subsequently, it means unless he wants to play VFL footy next year, Oliver will almost certainly be playing in different colours in 2026 — with the Giants already a keen suitor, according to Nine’s chief football reporter Tom Morris on Thursday.

The Demons confirmed in a Thursday statement that they’re now open to dealing the contracted 28-year-old, having previously turned down juicy trade offers from Adelaide in 2023 and Geelong in 2024.

Elliott re-signs with Pies | 00:26

So, can Melbourne mix it in terms of finals contention next year, despite the four likely departures — and even if they’re four-time All-Australian Petracca, triple All-Australian Oliver and dual All-Australian May?

“I mean, it makes it difficult, but it’s not impossible … Goody’s last eight weeks before he was sacked, they were heading in a pretty positive direction,” Dixon said.

“He was changing things in the way they played their game, so Steven King’s got to come in now and play that attacking brand … with freedom and licence. Coaching Geelong, you can see, they play with that, but these guys are 44, 45 different personalities, skill levels.

“They’re big holes in the midfield; massive holes in the midfield. And Steven May’s the other one. I mean, it’s fine that you want to trade him, get him out, but he’s still a premiership defender and competes hard one-on-one. They also don’t grow on trees; they take years and years to get an experienced type like that.

“Melbourne’s just a really experimental club right now, because they’re going to have to experiment with what they can do in the trade period, get some (high) calibre (players) and experience into that footy club if they’re going to be playing finals next year.”

Centre bounce and sub rule to end | 00:36

Ultimately, Dixon said he’d be concerned rather than hopeful if those four stars did wind up leaving, but he cited Richmond’s rebuild as a notable comparison.

“I’d be concerned, but … now list management and coaching have really got to roll up their sleeves. And that’s easily said, but it’s not easily done,” Dixon said.

“We’ve seen Adem Yze, I think (he) is a prime example — comes into a list that’s won multiple premierships and lets all these premiership stars go, reloads, and he’s on a four-to-five-year journey to build this club back up.

“Melbourne, after their flag, we thought they were going to run and win multiple flags, and they haven’t, so they’d be … probably swimming against the current in a way (thinking) ‘OK, yep, we’re going to get back and contend’ — it’s not that easy.

“And I think Steven has got enough experience. He gets his opportunity, which I’m so rapt for … they’ve done their time and their apprenticeships and done them at good clubs.

“It’s just a big concern for me right now that they put statements out that everyone wants to play finals and contend — that’s fine — but you’ve got to have the calibre (of list) to do that, you’ve got to have the game plan to do that, and we haven’t seen that yet.”

With new senior coach Steven King at the forefront, Melbourne is preparing to undergo a world of list…

[560
638,64,63,55,639,85
0":"post-185847","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-afl","8":"tag-afl","9":"tag-au","10":"tag-australia","11":"tag-australian-football-league","12":"tag-australianfootballleague","13":"tag-sports
["GET
