Airbus Defence and Space developed the spectrometer, while Thales Alenia Space UK completed satellite integration, backed by the UK Space Agency. <\/p>\n<p>By working together, this collaboration highlights Europe\u2019s growing expertise and commitment to space-based climate observation. <\/p>\n<p>Supporting the Copernicus climate network <\/p>\n<p>Although separate from the Copernicus<a href=\"https:\/\/www.openaccessgovernment.org\/satellite-breakthrough-new-method-to-track-fossil-fuel-co2-emissions\/189287\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> CO2 Monitoring<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eumetsat.int\/co2m\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">CO2M<\/a>) mission, MicroCarb complements it well. As a\u00a0Copernicus Contributing Mission, it will deliver early data to the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, which is used to produce essential greenhouse gas tracking products for Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The insights and operational experience gained from MicroCarb\u2019s mission will directly inform the development and optimisation of the upcoming Copernicus CO2M satellites. Together, these missions will help form a broader international network of satellites focused on monitoring greenhouse gases, a vital resource for scientists and policymakers worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Backed by European innovation programs <\/p>\n<p>The MicroCarb mission received funding from the European Commission\u2019s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. It also benefited from the\u00a0In-Orbit Demonstration\/Validation (IOD\/IOV) initiative, which helps bring innovative space technologies into operation.<\/p>\n<p>The European Space Agency played a crucial role in enabling the MicroCarb satellite\u2019s operations by funding the integration of an essential data processing unit for the MicroCarb ground segment. The mission\u2019s launch was also secured through Arianespace using the Vega-C rocket, further reinforcing Europe\u2019s autonomous capabilities in space access and climate observation.<\/p>\n<p>The future of climate accountability <\/p>\n<p>By providing precise, independent data on CO\u2082 emissions and absorption, MicroCarb will help improve scientific models used to predict future climate scenarios and track progress towards climate goals. This information is vital for assessing the effectiveness of international agreements and emission reduction policies.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, MicroCarb is essential in Europe\u2019s efforts to improve climate transparency and accountability.
