Other people are also on set performing nearby \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 bGQwLJ\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Between 1952 and 1960, Atwell spent 117 weeks in the UK charts and fronted her own shows on ITV and BBC television<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The blue plaque also marks the home where Atwell kept her two most famous instruments: her Steinway concert grand piano and her &#8220;other piano&#8221; \u2013 a deliberately out-of-tune upright piano that became her signature sound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Between 1952 and 1960, Atwell spent 117 weeks in the UK charts, appeared on over 100 BBC radio programmes, and fronted her own shows on ITV and BBC television.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Whilst living in London, the music star also used her expertise as a trained chemist to open a hair salon in Brixton which catered specifically for black hair care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Speaking before the unveiling, Holland, said: &#8220;Winifred Atwell is very important in British cultural and musical life. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">&#8220;She is one of the first women, and certainly one of the first women of Afro Caribbean heritage to become a mainstream figure in 1950s British entertainment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">He added it was &#8220;a tremendous personal honour&#8221; to be involved in the blue plaque unveiling. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758798129_864_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hagXkB hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/eac4f5f0-9ed3-11f0-92db-77261a15b9d2.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"English Heritage Jools Holland unveils the blue plaque by pulling on some string and revealing it from behind a red curtain\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 bGQwLJ\"\/>English Heritage<\/p>\n<p>Jools Holland unveiled the blue plaque in Mayfair, at Winifred Atwell&#8217;s former home <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Musician and broadcaster YolanDa Brown described Atwell as &#8220;a dazzling performer and a true trailblazer&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">&#8220;Her entrepreneurial spirit helped her break racial and musical barriers in mid-century Britain.&#8221;
