I’m not right all the time. I have absolute confidence in this team, absolute confidence in our leader, Luke Donald. We believed a lot in our continuity, and I believe that we had a really special group in Rome, and I felt like we had a real — look, I said that in the euphoria of winning a Ryder Cup, but I really felt like we had definitely way more of a chance than we had in Whistling Straits in 2021.

“So, I was bullish about our chances, but this has just been a dream week.”

‘He’s in your head!’ Europeans troll USA | 00:32

McIlroy withstood the barrage of abuse he received from the US crowd all week, but he broke down in tears during the European team’s press conference when Donald talked about how much the Ryder Cup means to his talisman, and how much he means to the team.

“Rory has made no qualms about how important the Ryder Cup is to him, and I think that’s inspiring to me. It can be as simple as some very small things,” he said.

“I’ll give you an example. At the hotel rooms this week, the doors to our hotel rooms had a big crack that let in light. We brought things that covered the light. We put different shampoos that had a better smell.

“We changed the bedding because the beds weren’t very good, and they just had sheets, and we created much nicer beds so guys could sleep. They could have more energy.

“Those are just little things. I’m going into some really small details.

He added: “It’s just taking the time and having the care that you want to do everything you can to kind of give these guys the best opportunity.

“You want create an environment where they can succeed. I mean, the rule has to change.

“I think it’s obvious to everybody in the sports world, in this room. Nothing against Viktor. But that rule needs to change by the next Ryder Cup.”

In tennis, an injured player retires from the match and their opponent is deemed the winner, advancing to the next round of the tournament.

That may be a change implemented, but tournament organisers could follow the lead of other team sports and allow teams to have substitutes at the ready if they feel the need for change.

European captain Luke Donald is not so sure that change is necessary, taking a view that injuries are unfortunate and they favour different teams at different times.

“I think it’s been in place since 1971,” Donald said of the rule.

“The US have used it before. I think it happened in 1991 with Steve Pate. That was a tight Ryder Cup, too, 14½-13½.

“It happened in 1993; Sam Torrance couldn’t play with an injured toe. The US won that one.

“We have contracts for a reason, a captains’ agreement for a reason, for situations that occur.

“I want to centre it back to Viktor; I would have had absolute faith in him to deliver a point today. It was amazing.”

It may have been Bradley’s one and only chance to do the role as only Davis Love III and Tom Watson have done the role multiple times for the US team in the past 35 years.

There has also not been a back-to-back US captain since Ben Hogan in 1947 and 1949.

The Ryder Cup ended in far more dramatic fashion than was expected, but Europe’s dominance in the team…

[566
120046,2095,51348,64,63,120044,9267,120054,120067,108977,120057,120049,120058,112124,120075,120078,84979,120072,104929,120068,120056,2057,117283,120069,51340,120052,51331,120059,120055,120047,108975,16271,120060,120074,2105,755,25300,120071,120048,120066,120043,6941,24270,120070,43063,26779,2328,120062,6919,15813,1204,51335,120064,113205,1025,2041,2067,3583,8015,120050,668,120063,6924,120053,3576,756,120079,120061,6952,1656,120073,3595,85,120065,120045,7663,77367,73132,120077,37088,120042,120051,120076,2614,120041,120080
post-189056","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-golf","tag-absolute-confidence","tag-america","tag-american-soil","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-backroom-staff","tag-ben-hogan","tag-bernard-gallacher","tag-bit-bummed","tag-brandel-chamblee","tag-captain-spoke","tag-captaincy-stints","tag-career-achievements","tag-carl-recine","tag-chaos-hits","tag-clutch-putt","tag-crowd-behaviour","tag-cup-rollercoaster","tag-davis-love-iii","tag-effing-close","tag-envelope-rule","tag-europe","tag-europe-holds","tag-europe-v","tag-european-captain","tag-european-press-conference","tag-european-team","tag-european-team-adviser","tag-european-team-captain","tag-europeans-reveal-secret","tag-farmingdale","tag-final-day","tag-final-day-scores","tag-final-day-wrap","tag-getty-images-inc","tag-golf","tag-golf-community","tag-golf-course-day","tag-golfing-accomplishments","tag-golfing-star","tag-hardest-golf-courses","tag-henrik-stenson","tag-home-side","tag-hotel-rooms","tag-ian-poulter","tag-ireland","tag-italy","tag-job-putting","tag-justin-thomas","tag-keegan-bradley","tag-lee-westwood","tag-luke-donald","tag-mcginley","tag-money-row","tag-new-york","tag-north-america","tag-northern-america","tag-northern-europe","tag-opposition-player","tag-paul-mcginley-on-live","tag-press-conference","tag-real-weird-relationship","tag-robert-macintyre","tag-role-multiple-times","tag-rome","tag-rory-mcilroy","tag-sam-torrance","tag-scoring-contest","tag-sergio-garcia","tag-shane-lowry","tag-singles-match","tag-southern-europe","tag-sports","tag-sports-world","tag-steve-pate","tag-talking-points","tag-talking-pts","tag-team-europe","tag-team-formats","tag-tom-watson","tag-tony-jacklin","tag-tournament-organisers","tag-trophy-ceremony","tag-united-states-of-america","tag-vice-captains","tag-weird-relationship
["GET
