{"id":190140,"date":"2025-10-04T19:32:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T19:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/190140\/"},"modified":"2025-10-04T19:32:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T19:32:07","slug":"time-is-running-out-sportsbet-offered-share-of-1m-in-bonus-bets-if-customers-gambled-on-afl-grand-final-day-gambling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/190140\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Time is running out\u2019: Sportsbet offered share of $1m in bonus bets if customers gambled on AFL grand final day | Gambling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Australia\u2019s largest online bookmaker texted customers offering a guaranteed share of $1m in bonus bets if they gambled on the morning of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/afl\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AFL<\/a> grand final.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The messages were among a series texted to a Victorian man\u2019s phone by Sportsbet during the AFL finals series in an apparent attempt to entice him to gamble more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More than two years ago a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2023\/jun\/28\/ads-for-online-gambling-should-be-banned-in-australia-within-three-years-inquiry-recommends\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bipartisan parliamentary inquiry<\/a> led by the late Labor MP Peta Murphy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/Parliamentary_Business\/Committees\/House\/Social_Policy_and_Legal_Affairs\/Onlinegamblingimpacts\/Report\/List_of_recommendations\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recommended all online gambling inducements be banned \u201cwithout delay\u201d<\/a>, citing evidence of harm to customers. The federal government is yet to formally respond to the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The offer of \u201ca guaranteed share of $1m in bonus bets\u201d was only provided if the man copied one of Sportsbet\u2019s suggested same-game multi bets. These allow gambling on a combination of outcomes during a game, and all must succeed for the bet to be paid out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Analysis has shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2023\/sep\/21\/afl-criticised-for-promoting-series-of-bets-that-have-85-loss-rate-for-gamblers\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">multi-bets have a high fail rate for gamblers<\/a> and leaked documents have shown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/feb\/12\/afl-plan-to-extract-more-money-from-gambling-faces-potential-legal-challenge\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the AFL receives a higher percentage of each bet<\/a> placed on these products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In early September the man, who declined to be named, was offered an \u201cexclusive deposit match\u201d offer. If he bet up to $50, Sportsbet would increase his stake by up to 400% with $200 in bonus bets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He was subsequently sent four text messages over two days saying \u201cTIME IS RUNNING OUT (\u2026) your deposit match expires soon. Don\u2019t miss out!\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Weeks later, after the offer had expired, Sportsbet sent him a more generous offer in a text message saying \u201cEXCLUSIVE 600% DEPOSIT MATCH\u201d with up to $300 in bonus bets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On the morning of the AFL grand final, the man was sent another text saying \u201cTIME IS RUNNING OUT!\u201d. Within 90 minutes, he recieved another text saying \u201ccopy any AFL GF SGM [grand final same-game multi] from the Feed and get guaranteed share of $1m in bonus bets\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Feed is Sportsbet\u2019s online portal that includes suggested bets from former players associated with the bookmaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Shortly before the season began, Sportsbet pulled ads for same-game multis from free-to-air television after listening to \u201cstrong community sentiment\u201d. But ads for the product were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/aug\/03\/sportsbet-advertises-multi-bets-on-afl-website-after-pulling-tv-ads-due-to-community-sentiment-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">splashed on the AFL\u2019s official website a few months later<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The independent MP Kate Chaney, who was a member of the parliamentary inquiry, criticised the use of inducements on grand final day. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cInducements encourage higher bets and more risk taking,\u201d Chaney said. \u201cThe evidence shows a clear link between inducements and increased gambling harm, which is why our inquiry recommended an immediate ban.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The independent senator, David Pocock, said inducements including these text messages were \u201cdesigned to encourage risky behaviours and research shows it\u2019s working\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cResearchers from the ANU this week showed levels of risky gambling are reaching levels never seen before,\u201d Pocock said. \u201cThe Murphy review recommended we put a ban on inducements, but to date the Albanese government has still not even responded to any of its 31 recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A Sportsbet spokesperson said the company \u201ctakes seriously its responsibility to be a leader in safer gambling culture and technology\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-17\" class=\"dcr-jzxpee\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-rsfwa\">Sign up to Breaking News Australia<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1xjndtj\">Get the most important news as it breaks<\/p>\n<p>Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain information about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. These communications also come with the option to easily opt out of receiving further communications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission, which licenses and regulates Sportsbet, declined to comment on the series of text messages because the person who received them had not formally written to the commission .<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Victorian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/gambling-australia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gambling<\/a> and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) said it needed more information to determine whether the text messages could be a breach of state regulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe VGCCC is generally concerned with the marketing of inducements because they are associated with an increased risk of gambling harm by leading to increases in expenditure and riskier betting, distracting people from harm minimisation messaging, engaging or re-engaging people in gambling when they would otherwise not be participating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Alliance for Gambling Reform has launched a campaign calling for wagering ads to be banned before next year\u2019s grand finals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Before the AFL grand final, the alliance\u2019s chief executive, Martin Thomas, said children would see \u201cmore gambling ads than goals\u201d over the weekend. \u201cThat\u2019s not sport, that\u2019s grooming the next generation of punters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The campaign has been supported by the former Western Bulldogs premiership player Tom Boyd, who said he was worried about the impact of gambling ads on young Australians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"> In Australia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamblinghelponline.org.au\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gambling Help Online<\/a> is available on 1800 858 858.
