(ABC News: Dunja Karagic)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But some analysts, such as head of energy research at MST Financial, Saul Kavonic, argue Woodside should be more worried about the project&#8217;s financial viability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The cost of the development itself &#8230; leave us with a questionable set of economics for the project,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Big up-front costs<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The gas industry has had its <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-29\/woodside-nw-shelf-approval-to-enable-browse-basin-development-\/105344468\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105344468\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eyes on Browse for decades<\/a>, but past efforts have failed to clear the economic hurdle of drilling for gas in such a remote location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Woodside needs to build a drilling platform, two floating production facilities and drill around 20 gas wells almost 300 kilometres off WA&#8217;s Kimberley coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">To process the gas, it would need to be transported via a 900-kilometre pipeline to the North West Shelf facility in Karratha.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Kavonic said the idea was considered and then abandoned 15 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They [also] looked to do the James Price Point development [in the Kimberley], which turned out to be too costly,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They looked to do floating LNG which turned out to be too risky.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When Woodside abandoned plans to develop Browse as a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-03-23\/woodside-abandons-browse-lng-project-kimberley-coast\/7269556\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/7269556\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">floating LNG project in 2016<\/a>, the WA premier at the time said the company was facing engineering costs above $50 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Complicated joint venture<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Another hurdle for the project is its complicated corporate structure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While Woodside is the company the public associates with Browse, the project is a joint venture between several gas players who have agreed to share responsibility for its profits, losses and costs.<\/p>\n<p>Browse joint ventureCompanyInterest (%)Woodside30.6BP Developments Australia44.33Japan Australia LNG14.40PetroChina International Investment10.67<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Kavonic said any of the partners could effectively veto the project if they decided it was not in their interest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So you need to herd a lot of cats, a lot of disparate interests, in order to get this over the line,&#8221;  he said.Optimistic oil price<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Kavonic is not the project&#8217;s only sceptic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A new report from climate research group Accela Research states many of the assumptions driving Browse&#8217;s profitability are &#8220;fragile&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">One of those is the long-term price of oil \u2014 the yardstick commonly used when the oil and gas industry plans for the future.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"fish swim underwater with coral in the foreground \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/b52c3e92a26fb57637a36442b8be9f87\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Developing Browse would mean drilling gas wells within 10 kilometres of the remote Scott Reef. (Supplied: Alex Westover)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Woodside is predicting the price of a barrel of oil will hover around $US78 over the next few decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Accela Research financial analyst Axel Dalman said this put the company at odds with others in the industry, including BP, which he said forecast the price would be around $US50 in 2050.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Whereas other companies think that, perhaps misguidedly, that oil demand will continue to be strong over the next few decades and that will keep prices high,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Dalman said an imminent &#8220;glut&#8221; in global liquid natural gas (LNG) production, driven by <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-08\/drill-baby-drill-in-alaska-ticks-trump-boxes\/105387014\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump&#8217;s &#8216;drill baby, drill&#8217; agenda<\/a>, was also likely to bring down prices.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Donald Trump on a podium in front of a large US flag on a screen\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/7590a1b99d9f1601cf04786bceb547dc\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The return of Donald Trump to the White House has sparked a spike in new LNG proposals. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This new LNG coming out of the US will probably oversupply the market and drive down prices,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That could be a problem for Browse because obviously the price of LNG is the biggest factor in how profitable the project is because it&#8217;s going to sell mostly LNG.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Mr Kavonic cautioned against reading too much into oil price predictions and short-term spikes in LNG supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Browse will probably not be coming online until the early-to-mid-2030s,&#8221; Mr Kavonic said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So that&#8217;s well after the period of oversupply which some are forecasting between 2027 and 2030.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A Woodside spokesperson said the company did not expect the current LNG supply wave to have a &#8220;sustained impact on pricing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For example, the International Energy Agency&#8217;s concerns expressed in both 2009 and 2016 of a sustained LNG glut, with far-reaching impacts on gas prices, did not eventuate,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They said the company was committed to the current Browse to North West Shelf concept.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[Woodside] remains focused on overcoming key challenges to the delivery of a globally competitive investment proposal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Browse to Darwin an option<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Kavonic said if the Browse to North West Shelf strategy does not work, eyes might turn towards the Ichthys LNG plant in Darwin.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Darwin Harbour InpexLNGLiquified Natural Gas\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/d546b7d0e4fe28f95be51b0ac923fa2d\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Inpex LNG plant in Darwin could be a more viable option to process the Browse basin gas than the North West Shelf in Karratha.
