(Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Gurruwiwi says he has seen the change firsthand, having noticed fewer hepatitis B deaths in his community in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Since 2019, he has been a key partner with NT hepatitis B prevention program HEP B PAST, working to improve access to testing and treatment in Arnhem Land as both a community liaison and researcher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I mentor through a cultural perspective, through kinship,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The difference is people understand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Falling morality rates<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Seventy per cent of people who have hepatitis B in the Northern Territory are Indigenous, according to <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1326020022000115?via%3Dihub\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">data from the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Viral Hepatitis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-03-19\/hepititis-b-study-aboriginal-australians-northern-territory\/10914184\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Landmark hepatitis study tracks ancient human movements<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">In what they believe is an Australian first, researchers have used a unique strain of hepatitis B virus to deduce ancient human population movements into Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The territory is also home to an aggressive strain of hepatitis B called C4, which has only ever been diagnosed in Aboriginal people, and particularly Aboriginal people in the NT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Hepatitis B can lead to severe liver degradation, and liver cancer in some cases if left untreated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While non-chronic infections can be cured, most NT cases are chronic, and can be treated \u2014 though not cured \u2014 through regular check-ups to monitor liver function.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Anngie Everitt, a nurse who runs a hepatitis clinic in Darwin, said the main way hepatitis B was transmitted in the NT was from mother to child, during birth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s babies, it&#8217;s people that either contract from birth, or at a really young age, that are most likely to develop chronic hepatitis B, which requires lifelong treatment,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with glasses sitting at a desk chair, in front of a filing cabinet with colourful posters about sexual health on it.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/f34c27660a30ae0dcd11fb5594781c4a\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Anngie Everitt runs a Darwin clinic for all types of hepatitis. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Ten years ago we definitely were not meeting national strategy targets for people being diagnosed, for them being engaged in care and for them being on treatment \u2026 [but] very recently we&#8217;re able to say we&#8217;re achieving the national strategy targets,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That means that we have 99 per cent of people diagnosed \u2026 and the national target is 80 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We have 86 per cent of people engaged in care and the national target is 50 per cent, and we have 24 per cent of people on treatment and the national target is 20 per cent.
