{"id":193296,"date":"2025-10-06T12:23:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T12:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/193296\/"},"modified":"2025-10-06T12:23:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T12:23:13","slug":"nba-trade-guide-how-14-teams-will-approach-the-2025-26-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/193296\/","title":{"rendered":"NBA trade guide: How 14 teams will approach the 2025-26 season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just over one year ago, the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"61719eb2-11c3-4e3d-90c3-0a1319fd850b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/ny\/new-york-knicks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Knicks<\/a> and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"13f727cb-254d-b484-a337-93fcc0047add\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/min\/minnesota-timberwolves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Minnesota Timberwolves<\/a> made a rare blockbuster move that involved seven players, including All-Stars <a data-player-guid=\"12998df5-b137-fe32-8e90-f3844e8d8ee6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3136195\/karl-anthony-towns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Karl-Anthony Towns<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"cea0d1d3-6353-87c8-929e-c556ae36dc41\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3064514\/julius-randle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Julius Randle<\/a>. The trade was one of only two deals before the 2024-2025 regular season, and the next trade did not happen until Dec. 15.<\/p>\n<p>The Feb. 5 trade deadline is four months away, and though the 118 players who signed contracts this offseason cannot be traded now, it is never too early to break down the top-14 teams to watch, as well as some quick-hit notes around the league.<\/p>\n<p>We start with the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"77a8546f-24bf-a333-8161-bf9f75396c49\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/gs\/golden-state-warriors\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Golden State Warriors<\/a>, who are looking to extend the championship window of 37-year-old <a data-player-guid=\"5dda51f1-50c9-66e1-2026-400b73f34fad\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3975\/stephen-curry\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Curry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1752936309_868_greyline.png\" width=\"100%\"\/>The closing window to compete for a championship<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gs.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/gs\/golden-state-warriors\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Golden State Warriors<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Warriors were staring at an undesirable position &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/46441474\/warriors-jonathan-kuminga-agree-2-year-485-million-deal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">before signing<\/a> <a data-player-guid=\"fa4aeb82-1488-3163-b374-4e0cdd9cb23a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4433247\/jonathan-kuminga\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Kuminga<\/a> on Sept. 30.Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Golden State had the first-round draft capital &#8212; the Warriors can trade up to the maximum four first-round picks and also swap in the next seven years &#8212; to make a significant trade during the season. But, unlike the sizable contracts available in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/6430\/jimmy-butler-iii\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jimmy Butler<\/a> trade last February (<a data-player-guid=\"064c19d0-6527-6a21-ca99-fdfb296fe05d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3059319\/andrew-wiggins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Wiggins<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"ed50e972-a95d-6b5c-3fcd-0d75616d1159\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3032979\/dennis-schroder\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dennis Schroder<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"0b5e3fdc-796d-c463-655c-9c8f6622bcd0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/2993874\/kyle-anderson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Anderson<\/a>), that did not exist this season. Curry, Butler and <a data-player-guid=\"de360720-e416-25f2-8a6b-b5ff82616cb1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/6589\/draymond-green\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Draymond Green<\/a> combine to earn more than 75% of the Warriors&#8217; team salary cap, leaving Golden State without enough salary to cobble together a deal if an impact player were available. The Warriors&#8217; three next highest-paid players &#8212; <a data-player-guid=\"dd869c0b-ea23-34a4-ae00-f343db752592\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4432171\/moses-moody\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Moses Moody<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"2ca1d65c-40ac-4440-9034-8a6c954e876c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/2990984\/buddy-hield\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Buddy Hield<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"60bcccd8-d8f6-336b-903e-1b7ee3d1aa3e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4709138\/brandin-podziemski\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brandin Podziemski<\/a> &#8212; have a total salary equal to $24 million.<\/p>\n<p>Golden State benefits in multiple ways with Kuminga not signing the $8 million qualifying offer. Although he can&#8217;t be traded until Jan. 15, the Warriors now have a $22.5 million trade asset. By waiving his one-year Bird restriction, Golden State can also trade Kuminga without his approval.<\/p>\n<p>But there are financial consequences with the new Kuminga contract and signing <a data-player-guid=\"b79dd16a-5d4b-d704-9b0c-eaa9ec3df217\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3213\/al-horford\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Al Horford<\/a> to the tax midlevel exception.<\/p>\n<p>The Warriors are now hard-capped at the second apron &#8212; they are $2 million below &#8212; and not allowed to take back more salary in a trade and aggregate contracts if it leaves them over the second apron.<\/p>\n<p>The two timelines<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759753389_385_bos.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"2ca761df-5f60-b2e9-22ed-e099c46d889b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/bos\/boston-celtics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Celtics<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Boston accomplished its offseason goal in the short term by getting under the second apron thanks to trading starters <a data-player-guid=\"6694d3e6-7257-f217-35dc-f6911488b9f1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3995\/jrue-holiday\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jrue Holiday<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"a1f467e2-5304-c8c1-db23-80fe313c3d7c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3102531\/kristaps-porzingis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kristaps Porzingis<\/a>. The Celtics have also reduced their payroll by $300 million since June 15.<\/p>\n<p>The financial savings and <a data-player-guid=\"ed3343b0-2ffa-f6b4-e422-3a1920938c81\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4065648\/jayson-tatum\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jayson Tatum<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/46356238\/celtics-tatum-not-ruling-potential-return-next-season\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rehabbing from a torn Achilles<\/a> injury suffered in the playoffs didn&#8217;t deter Boston from taking a proactive approach to its roster this season.<\/p>\n<p>Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens dismissed the idea that this season would be a rebuilding year, despite the uncertainty of Tatum&#8217;s return.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s not going to be part of the lexicon [on rebuilding] in our building, and that&#8217;s the way we&#8217;re going to focus moving forward,&#8221; Stevens said this summer. Even with Tatum out, the Celtics still have two All-Stars in <a data-player-guid=\"0d5cde01-f6d3-225f-dae5-44ef3304cda2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3917376\/jaylen-brown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jaylen Brown<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"8aba42b7-4c1e-6ccd-3150-97691c299668\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3078576\/derrick-white\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Derrick White<\/a>. Those three players are all under contract through at least the 2028-29 season.<\/p>\n<p>How Boston adds to its roster for the future &#8212; or subtracts in the short term &#8212; could come down to <a data-player-guid=\"95170b60-db18-eac2-dca0-6cbf4bc24884\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4351851\/anfernee-simons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anfernee Simons<\/a>, whom the franchise acquired in the Holiday deal with Portland. Simons has a $27.7 million expiring contract.<\/p>\n<p>Boston remains $12 million over the luxury tax, and is projected to pay a $39 million penalty. The Celtics are also a first-apron team, and not allowed to take back more money in a trade.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\"\/>play<\/p>\n<p>0:39<\/p>\n<p>Tatum feels &#8216;no pressure&#8217; to return sooner from Achilles injury<\/p>\n<p class=\"contentItem__subhead\">Celtics star Jayson Tatum explains why there is no pressure to return quicker from his Achilles injury.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lal.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"2876e98b-b9bc-2920-4319-46e6943f8be4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/lal\/los-angeles-lakers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Lakers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>No organization exemplifies the two timelines more than the Lakers.<\/p>\n<p>The present is a roster with <a data-player-guid=\"1f6592b3-ff53-d321-8dc5-6038d48c1786\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/1966\/lebron-james\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LeBron James<\/a>, the 23-year veteran, entering the last year of his contract (with a no-trade clause) and the uncertainty of the future. Besides James, <a data-player-guid=\"40c1bcf6-675b-f217-f97c-1d628073f927\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4066648\/rui-hachimura\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rui Hachimura<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"82247bd5-fd40-3926-f54f-af0cc016aa37\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3137259\/gabe-vincent\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gabe Vincent<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"d06ad722-26ff-5865-1433-061e2e6fbb32\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/2960236\/maxi-kleber\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maxi Kleber<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"8a9d9e1c-6174-0009-4883-3b4e16b492d0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4066457\/austin-reaves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Austin Reaves<\/a> can all become free agents next summer. The four players (excluding James) give the Lakers over $50 million in expiring contracts.<\/p>\n<p>The future is <a data-player-guid=\"583794eb-0f38-9bbd-3e25-9dd33b7f83b8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3945274\/luka-doncic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luka Doncic<\/a>, who is under contract through at least the 2027-28 season (he has a player option in 2028-29), and financial flexibility in the next two offseasons to build a roster around the generational player. The Lakers could have up to $50 million in cap space next offseason, and nearly double that amount the following summer.<\/p>\n<p>But can the Lakers afford to be patient, waiting until next summer with James on the roster?<\/p>\n<p>As sources confirmed to ESPN&#8217;s Dave McMenamin in September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/46381679\/lakers-leave-future-lebron-james-extend-coach-jj-redick\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Lakers are open to trading for a player<\/a> on a contract that extends beyond 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The Lakers can trade a 2031 or 2032 first-round pick, and have the right to swap firsts in five seasons.<\/p>\n<p>The future of Giannis<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/mil.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"f59bbabc-eedb-9ad2-c5dd-9bcd9f450a2f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/mil\/milwaukee-bucks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milwaukee Bucks<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bucks GM Jon Horst has exhausted all options while attempting to build a contending team around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3032977\/giannis-antetokounmpo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Horst traded for <a data-player-guid=\"6fe27ee9-be2b-9ddd-d75f-18675e177915\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3134907\/kyle-kuzma\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Kuzma<\/a> at the trade deadline and then &#8212; at the expense of <a data-player-guid=\"c6bdd0b0-2176-2089-9b41-1ca3540f64f4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/6606\/damian-lillard\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Damian Lillard<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"d87adcb4-8736-4ba7-a188-250127546a89\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/2578239\/pat-connaughton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pat Connaughton<\/a> &#8212; signed <a data-player-guid=\"a61d70b4-d544-33c8-3eb9-aa6e5074f97e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3133628\/myles-turner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Myles Turner<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"2f914525-c16f-def6-42db-f2a4c1d27502\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3064482\/bobby-portis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bobby Portis<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"7a72e2ce-bd08-714e-0bb8-ac654a7a2774\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4397140\/kevin-porter-jr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Porter Jr<\/a>., <a data-player-guid=\"3bde0020-ead9-3c4d-90bf-9b7066fe9a70\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4591725\/ryan-rollins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Rollins<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"a42d9e61-4fca-c73b-afc4-5da0eb14df98\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4277843\/gary-trent-jr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gary Trent Jr<\/a>., <a data-player-guid=\"80977674-266a-5c4a-16a5-f7efe9961fe0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/2999547\/gary-harris\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gary Harris<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"bb4c77ff-39aa-4d30-47a4-a1e375f721d1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/2990962\/taurean-prince\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taurean Prince<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"a1f01b18-9446-26a2-5f12-cff33c2784f1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4277922\/jericho-sims\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jericho Sims<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"390cbbeb-9761-1174-69a8-831a5b201127\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4432809\/cole-anthony\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cole Anthony<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"3abc536f-365a-3780-8b1e-3b758ad20c98\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4433622\/chris-livingston\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Livingston<\/a> and finally, Antetokounmpo&#8217;s brother Thanasis.<\/p>\n<p>The acquisitions left Milwaukee with no second-round picks and only one first in either 2031 or 2032 available to trade. The Bucks also have $20 million in dead cap space over the next five seasons after waiving Lillard.<\/p>\n<p>The roster turnover has quieted rumors about Antetokounmpo&#8217;s future &#8212; at least for now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I deal with what I have in front of me,&#8221; Antetokounmpo said at media day. &#8220;I think it&#8217;s a great team. It&#8217;s a sleeper, and a lot of people might not take it seriously, but I think we are a very, very dangerous team.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If the Bucks start slowly and fall out of contention, Antetokounmpo&#8217;s future will again surface. After all, Antetokounmpo said he did not remember a conversation he had with owner Wes Edens regarding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/46425306\/giannis-antetokounmpo-focused-another-championship\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whether he was committed to Milwaukee this summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If Antetokounmpo gets restless, Milwaukee will have to wait until at least Dec. 15 to add to the roster.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The same thing I&#8217;ve been saying my whole career, I want to be in a team that allows me and gives me a chance to win a championship,&#8221; said Antetokounmpo, who is sitting out the start of training camp after testing positive for COVID-19. &#8220;I think it&#8217;s a disservice to basketball, just to the game, to not want it to compete at a high level, to want your season to end in April.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since the Bucks signed 11 players this offseason, only four players on the roster (Giannis, Kuzma, <a data-player-guid=\"e467715b-6501-c7d0-4eaf-1a91d75e7979\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4397475\/aj-green\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AJ Green<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"c576261e-e8e7-3b5d-b93b-50d6fb63e30f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/5167876\/tyler-smith\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyler Smith<\/a>) are trade-eligible. The restrictions for the free agents signed get lifted in mid-December, however.<\/p>\n<p>Issues with the apron<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hou.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"78113ad4-1ac7-0c04-dada-388a6ff4e15e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/hou\/houston-rockets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Rockets<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The season-ending injury to <a data-player-guid=\"6c6e5179-fc67-908e-bc50-0a5580d64159\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/2991230\/fred-vanvleet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fred VanVleet<\/a> on Sept. 22 should signal Houston as one of the more active teams in early-season trade discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Though the Rockets have appealing draft assets (they have the right to swap firsts with Brooklyn as well as a Phoenix unprotected first in 2027), first-apron restrictions and a lack of tradeable contracts likely have Houston in a holding pattern.<\/p>\n<p>The Rockets are $1.2 million below the first apron, and not allowed to sign a replacement. The second season for DeRozan is partially guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in his career, Monk averaged more than 30 minutes per game but also shot below 33% from 3 for the first time since 2019-20. For a team that has won a combined 55 games in the past two seasons, the Raptors are also a projected $3 million over the tax, a topic Webster addressed before the start of training camp.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The likelihood that this team is the exact same team by the end of the year is probably zero,&#8221; Webster said.<\/p>\n<p>He also added that there is no financial pressure from ownership because Toronto resides in one of the biggest and most lucrative NBA markets.<\/p>\n<p>If Toronto trims payroll or adds to the roster, do not expect that to occur until Webster can evaluate the roster in totality. The Raptors traded for <a data-player-guid=\"735792ca-bca3-6bab-e2ed-68f39ccc7270\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3913176\/brandon-ingram\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brandon Ingram<\/a> in February, but the forward did not play in a game because of an ankle injury. Since taking over as the Mavericks GM in June 2021, Harrison has made 16 trades, including seven in the regular season.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison has made at least one trade in four straight regular seasons.<\/p>\n<p>The Mavericks have the contracts (nine, including <a data-player-guid=\"3411530a-7ab7-e8dc-e4f1-65d59a559520\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/6475\/klay-thompson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Klay Thompson<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"5ea1b27c-35dc-c1cf-3d9c-ba22c98062d4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4278049\/daniel-gafford\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Gafford<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"cdbdcd50-106b-aad8-204e-49201a429b51\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4278594\/naji-marshall\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Naji Marshall<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"c7402e53-7823-fac4-b133-907d0c303f60\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3138160\/caleb-martin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Caleb Martin<\/a>, Christie, <a data-player-guid=\"d4c656b3-e2b5-33c4-b4e7-7aca3e7f153c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4868423\/jaden-hardy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jaden Hardy<\/a>, Russell, <a data-player-guid=\"a0268e7a-137e-3749-b75c-bedefd1177e4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4683688\/dereck-lively-ii\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dereck Lively II<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"c18853c2-6b2f-5060-a870-8eb770b4b881\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/2531367\/dwight-powell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dwight Powell<\/a> earning between $4 million to $17 million) and first-round picks (the Lakers&#8217; 2029 first and their own in 2031 or 2032) to make another big regular-season trade.<\/p>\n<p>Because Russell was signed to the tax midlevel exception (he cannot be traded until Dec. 15), Dallas is hard-capped at the second apron (currently $1.3 million below) and not allowed to take back more money in a trade. The Mavericks are also not allowed to aggregate contracts if it leaves them over the apron.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4278078\/pj-washington\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">P.J. Washington<\/a> signed an extension and is ineligible to be traded.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759753393_21_phi.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"ca1685ed-b799-53e4-7924-e58ea6eb8f3a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/phi\/philadelphia-76ers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia 76ers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The health of <a data-player-guid=\"89410119-0011-5ba0-efed-7b0b6c756c23\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3059318\/joel-embiid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joel Embiid<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"d7e5e918-d53f-018e-9d15-f9005b2390ad\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4251\/paul-george\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul George<\/a> once again will play a role in Philadelphia&#8217;s activity in trade discussions.<\/p>\n<p>If the 76ers struggle again this season, cutting costs can be an option again.<\/p>\n<p>Last February, they dropped below the tax by trading Reggie Jackson, KJ Martin and Caleb Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia is $7 million over the tax and has the expiring contracts of <a data-player-guid=\"dbe4d07d-9166-07d7-19f0-52cc771d179d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4397014\/quentin-grimes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Quentin Grimes<\/a> ($8.7 million), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3133603\/kelly-oubre-jr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kelly Oubre Jr.<\/a> ($8.4 million) and <a data-player-guid=\"355269b7-21fc-8104-b40e-d7c81ec96c9a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/6585\/andre-drummond\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andre Drummond<\/a> ($5 million). Grimes cannot be traded until Jan. 15, and has the right to void any trade.<\/p>\n<p>Improving the roster is challenging, however.<\/p>\n<p>Other than the $24 million in expiring contracts, Philadelphia is top-heavy with contracts. Embiid, George and <a data-player-guid=\"4a24e9cd-a7a5-371b-9148-bef246046609\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4431678\/tyrese-maxey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyrese Maxey<\/a> will earn $145 million this season.<\/p>\n<p>The cap space team<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bkn.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"926db769-d35e-e282-9d7e-a05001d774ab\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/bkn\/brooklyn-nets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn Nets<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had labeled Brooklyn as the one team that controlled the offseason because of the cap space.<\/p>\n<p>Though the space has shrunk with the trades of Michael Porter Jr., <a data-player-guid=\"14bc202c-2458-6189-f964-32085299060a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3907823\/terance-mann\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Terance Mann<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"c2370b24-1429-3edd-efe0-ab0e5da670a1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4291678\/haywood-highsmith\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Haywood Highsmith<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"0fe19f0d-036e-35de-80f5-ddfc232292db\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4683736\/kobe-bufkin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kobe Bufkin<\/a>, Brooklyn still has over $13 million in room and its $8.8 million room midlevel exception (the two cannot be combined) to be active in trade discussions.<\/p>\n<p>The Nets have preliminarily reached the minimum salary requirement (a team has to spend 90% of the salary cap by the first day of the regular season), but are still a team to monitor before the start of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn could fall under the minimum salary floor by waiving <a data-player-guid=\"3a6b62f1-208d-a4e3-0c34-a20660ffdf80\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4431714\/jalen-wilson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jalen Wilson<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"cf2ef45f-75a2-ce32-aa75-07816d93f49b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4397179\/tyrese-martin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyrese Martin<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"3943bf55-326a-33e3-9f3f-7909a9a700f5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4431695\/drew-timme\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drew Timme<\/a>. The Nets already have 15 players on guaranteed contracts, and the three aforementioned players have a combined $6.2 million in non-guaranteed salary.<\/p>\n<p>If the three are waived before Oct. 20, Brooklyn would need to trade for a player earning more than $4 million.<\/p>\n<p>More trade notes<\/p>\n<p>There were 25 trades during the 2024-25 regular season &#8212; 20 of those trades happened in February.<\/p>\n<p>The Cavaliers are the only team over the second apron. Cleveland is not allowed to send cash in a trade, use more than 100% of the traded player exception or aggregate contracts sent out if the post-transaction leaves it over the second apron.<\/p>\n<p>Boston, Minnesota and Phoenix were over the second apron in 2024-25. Each of those teams is not allowed to trade its 2032 first-round pick.<\/p>\n<p>Starting on the first day of the regular season, teams over the first or second apron are not allowed to sign a player waived who had a preexisting salary greater than $14.1 million<\/p>\n<p>The Hornets, Jazz and Wizards are teams to watch either in a three-team trade or a deal taking back salary. Charlotte and Washington each has its $14.1 million non-tax midlevel exception to use in a trade. Utah has an $18.4 million trade exception.<\/p>\n<p><a data-player-guid=\"4dcec409-3ff9-2881-2bc3-b4289ce6c36d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4278073\/shai-gilgeous-alexander\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/a> and P.J. Washington are the only players ineligible to be traded. Gilgeous-Alexander signed a supermax extension and has a one-year restriction. Washington&#8217;s six-month restriction for extending falls beyond the Feb. 5 deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Five players (<a data-player-guid=\"2381f346-9247-3ba1-b632-fcef378a2799\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4593803\/jalen-williams\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jalen Williams<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"d28316e9-20cc-3cb2-b5d7-afdb6418315b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4433255\/chet-holmgren\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chet Holmgren<\/a>, Jabari Smith Jr., <a data-player-guid=\"85087f7e-1bed-3b18-804a-39cbea05b803\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4997528\/nikola-jovic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nikola Jovic<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"b121848a-30d3-3fad-b6ab-74bf04005533\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4432573\/paolo-banchero\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paolo Banchero<\/a>) have signed rookie extensions. Each player now has a poison-pill restriction. Smith can still be traded, but his incoming salary counts as $22.4 million and outgoing $12.4 million.<\/p>\n<p>A player who signs a free agent contract in the offseason before Sept. 15 cannot be traded until Dec. 15. If a player signs with his prior team (Kuminga with the Warriors, for example) and his salary is greater than 120% of last year, he cannot be traded until Jan. 15.<\/p>\n<p>LeBron James and Damian Lillard are the two players with a no-trade clause. A player who re-signs with his team for one season or two but with an option and establishes early or Bird rights has the right to void any trade. Quentin Grimes is the most recent example. If Grimes is traded, he no longer has Bird rights.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a trend of players reducing or eliminating the trade bonus in their contracts. Since last February, four players (Anthony Davis, Zach LaVine, Kyle Kuzma and <a data-player-guid=\"e9d2d871-df56-3068-8d5f-e3fc27f49a96\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4437244\/jalen-green\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jalen Green<\/a>) have either modified or eliminated the bonus owed as a result of the trade. This season, 41 players have a trade bonus in their contract. However, nine players&#8217; (<a data-player-guid=\"00985054-c4b3-4247-e825-ddf062d457c3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3032977\/giannis-antetokounmpo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/a>, Scottie Barnes, Jaylen Brown, Stephen Curry, <a data-player-guid=\"eb092265-024f-9840-7f49-507cfcab5aab\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4396907\/darius-garland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Darius Garland<\/a>, Nikola Jokic, <a data-player-guid=\"27839f34-323e-31ce-9bfb-3708571bef5a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4432158\/evan-mobley\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Evan Mobley<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"de5f87e0-8571-a730-ade4-6d00d10b8577\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4279888\/ja-morant\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ja Morant<\/a>, Jayson Tatum) bonuses would be voided because they exceed the maximum salary allowed.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/ind\/indiana-pacers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana Pacers<\/a> are the only team that has been granted a disabled player exception. The exception is rewarded if a player cannot play through June 15. The exception is the lesser of 50% of the player&#8217;s salary for that season or the amount equal to the non-tax midlevel exception. Indiana is allowed to sign or trade for a player in the last year of their contract and must have a roster spot. The deadline to apply for the exception is January, and the last day to use it is March 10.<\/p>\n<p>The Celtics have a $22.5 million trade exception, the largest of any team. The exception was created after July 1, allowing Boston to use it despite being over the first apron. Teams over either apron are not allowed to use a preexisting exception from the prior season.
