A man who allegedly fired up to 50 bullets at random members of the public in Sydney’s inner west, injuring multiple people, has been charged with multiple offences including intent to murder.<\/p>\n
From about 7:45pm on Sunday night, Croydon Park was plunged into lockdown following reports of an active shooter on Georges River Road, near the intersection of Brighton Street.<\/p>\n
Over a 2-hour period, police officers exchanged fire with the alleged gunman, Artemios Mintzas, 60, in what they described as a “highly dangerous operation”.<\/p>\n

Locals ducked for cover as Mr Mintzas allegedly fired shots “indiscriminately” from the window of a unit above a business, with bullets striking 13 vehicles and a nearby bus shelter, according to police.<\/p>\n
NSW Ambulance treated 16 people at the scene for minor injuries. Two men were hospitalised.<\/p>\n
Mr Mintzas was arrested about 9:30pm after tactical officers stormed the unit and a 30-calibre rifle along with ammunition were seized, police said.<\/p>\n
He was taken to hospital under police guard for injuries to his eye due to smashed glass, and his physical and mental health were assessed.<\/p>\n
At about 12:30pm, Mr Mintzas was returned to custody at Burwood Police Station, where he was charged late on Monday night with 25 offences.<\/p>\n

He faces 18 counts of shooting with intent to murder along with charges relating to possession of a loaded firearm, firing in or near a public place and discharging a firearm with intent to resist arrest, among the multiple charges.<\/p>\n
He was refused bail and is due to front Burwood Local Court on Tuesday, October 7.<\/p>\n
The ABC understands he works for Sydney Trains.<\/p>\n
In an earlier update, Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry said Mr Mintzas had no links to organised crime or terrorist networks.<\/p>\n
“He’s a 60-year-old male who does have a couple of children and very few recorded interactions [with police] over the last 20 years.”<\/p>\n
There was also no recorded history of mental health, he added.<\/p>\n
A man in his 50s, who was shot in the neck and chest, underwent emergency surgery.<\/p>\n
