If you\u2019d have asked Oscar Piastri to define \u2018papaya rules\u2019 \u2014 McLaren\u2019s much-discussed mandate for driving standards between its teammates \u2014 back in August, he\u2019d have told you one thing: \u201cDon\u2019t crash into each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

A clip of Piastri defining that very clear standard of operation has made the rounds online following first-lap contact between the two McLaren drivers at the start of the Singapore Grand Prix<\/a>, prompting questions about the team\u2019s handling of the situation.<\/p>\n

Oscar Piastri \u201cpapaya rules\u201d definition emerges once again<\/p>\n

In an video interview with Autosport released in mid-August, during F1 2025\u2019s summer break, Oscar Piastri<\/a> was asked to define \u2018papaya rules\u2019 \u2014 or, the driving standard that McLaren holds both of its racers to as they battle for a championship sweep.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s always been a lot more made out of \u2018papaya rules\u2019 than what there actually is,\u201d Piastri stated with a laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is literally one rule: don\u2019t crash into each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

But that one critical rule was violated during the start of the Singapore Grand Prix. Lando Norris took advantage of a strong start and a gap on the track to dive past his teammate into Turn 3. However, that gap narrowed quickly, leaving Norris clattering into Max Verstappen\u2019s Red Bull RB21 and bouncing back into his teammate.<\/p>\n

Norris suffered a bit of front wing damage but was able to use the move to assert himself into third place. Piastri, meanwhile, took evasive action to avoid hitting the wall before having to settle into fourth place.<\/p>\n

Piastri was clearly frustrated with his teammate\u2019s actions, which likely seemed to be a clear violation of McLaren\u2019s only mandate.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I mean, that wasn\u2019t very team-like, but sure,\u201d Piastri said over the radio. Moments later, he continued, \u201cSo, are we cool with Lando just barging me out of the way? What\u2019s the go there?\u201d<\/p>\n

His race engineer Tom Stallard later clarified, \u201cAs a team, we see Lando had to avoid Verstappen, so we won\u2019t take any action during the race. We can review further afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMate, that\u2019s not fair,\u201d Piastri said. \u201cThat\u2019s not fair.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll have the opportunity to review afterwards, just focus on the race,\u201d Stallard replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he has to avoid another car by crashing into his teammate, then that\u2019s a pretty **** job of avoiding,\u201d Piastri said.<\/p>\n

The incident caused many fans to revisit Piastri\u2019s August Autosport interview, with the singular \u201cdon\u2019t crash\u201d rule prompting further questions about McLaren\u2019s decision. Piastri seemed to feel that that \u201cdon\u2019t crash\u201d mandate meant no crashing under any circumstances; McLaren seems to be suggesting that there are indeed instances in which a collision is acceptable.<\/p>\n

That makes Piastri\u2019s next statement in the Autosport clip particularly compelling.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think, you know, we\u2019ve always been very open about how we go racing, and I think trying to not spring any surprises on us as drivers,\u201d Piastri said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s been the biggest thing because that\u2019s where things become difficult, when you don\u2019t expect something to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Singapore contact was not the only time Piastri questioned a McLaren decision based on what he understood to be previously agreed-upon standards.<\/p>\n

At the Italian Grand Prix, Lando Norris in second was one position ahead of his teammate and was therefore able to suggest that Piastri pit first. The Australian\u2019s stop was clean, but a wheel gun issue saw Norris delayed in returning to the track \u2014 where he came out behind his teammate.<\/p>\n

Piastri was then instructed to cede position to Norris, a decision that he questioned on the radio.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, we said a slow pit stop was part of racing, so I don\u2019t really get what\u2019s changed here,\u201d he told the team. However, he did as he was told.<\/p>\n

The Australian driver did indeed note to the media ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix that it\u2019s impossible for any team to anticipate every variable that could come into play but that he believed they\u2019d all come to a greater understanding of what to expect during a race. But Piastri has been thrown for a loop twice in recent succession.<\/p>\n

With the constructors\u2019 championship decided in McLaren\u2019s favor, many onlookers are now wondering how long the \u201cpapa rules\u201d ethos will continue to hold up.<\/p>\n
