On 7 October 1977, the team mathematically secured the trophy by defeating Varese in the fourth game of a round-robin tournament held in the Spanish capital. The Whites retained the title, the second of three consecutive victories between 1976 and 1978.<\/p>\n<p>Real Madrid\u00a0were back in the\u00a0Intercontinental Cup\u00a0a year after winning the previous edition in Buenos Aires.
