Knights assistant Blake Green has reportedly knocked back an approach from the Super League, which keeps him in contention to take over should the club sack Adam O\u2019Brien.<\/p>\n

Reports emerged in mid-July embattled Newcastle coach would be axed from his position at the season\u2019s end, with the club preparing to pay O\u2019Brien out of the final two years of his deal.<\/p>\n

Incoming chief executive Peter Parr moved to silence those reports, telling Code Sports<\/a>: \u201cAs far as I\u2019m aware, he\u2019s going to be the coach for the foreseeable future\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, the doubts surrounding O\u2019Brien\u2019s future are still lingering, with Green being named as the leading candidate to take over.<\/p>\n

Having hung up the boots in 2021 after a 181-game NRL career, Green initially signed on as Newcastle\u2019s NRLW coach that same year.<\/p>\n

However, he ultimately shifted into the club\u2019s NRL coaching staff and is currently O\u2019Brien\u2019s attacking coach.<\/p>\n

According to the Newcastle Herald<\/a>, the former halfback is being targeted by the Castleford Tigers to make a move to England and become a head coach.<\/p>\n

However, the 38-year-old reportedly has \u201clittle or no interest\u201d in making a move abroad, which leaves him in contention to succeed O\u2019Brien should he be sacked.<\/p>\n

Doubts have been cast over his potential ability to lead the Knights moving forward, with Fox League\u2019s James Hooper labelling Green\u2019s potential promotion \u201cstrange\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a big push on for Blake Green,\u201d Hooper said on NRL360.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not saying he won\u2019t make a very competent head coach at some point, but he\u2019s in charge of their attack at the moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd their attack is one of the worst, diabolical, putrid in terms of what they\u2019ve been able to produce.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not a knock on him, but I\u2019m just saying it is a strange narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Daily Telegraph\u2019s Michael Carayannis, meanwhile, was of the belief O\u2019Brien could be set to continue his tenure into the 2026 season.<\/p>\n

However, Hooper hit back at that claim, saying: \u201cI know you\u2019re saying you think he might be a good chance, but with all the noise that\u2019s been going on there, Mick, I think you might have your head in the sand a bit\u201d.<\/p>\n

For Parr, the news of O\u2019Brien\u2019s impending axing could simply be a case of conversations within the club being misunderstood.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody above me has discussed Adam not being at the club. But I also understand there\u2019s always conversations in and around footy clubs when you\u2019re not travelling well and we have only won a third of our games,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I understand that different people would be talking about the team, the coach, the players.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes what happens there is people put their own spin on it or add their own GST, and it doesn\u2019t take much to turn it into a story.<\/p>\n
