{"id":196378,"date":"2025-10-08T00:09:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T00:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/196378\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T00:09:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T00:09:09","slug":"european-mars-orbiter-spies-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-zooming-past-red-planet-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/196378\/","title":{"rendered":"European Mars orbiter spies interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS zooming past Red Planet (photos)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"313d5c1a-48c9-4914-8f23-a57ce72d26b6\">A European Mars probe witnessed the interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS&#8217; Red Planet flyby last week.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 3, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/scientists-capture-interstellar-invader-comet-3i-atlas-growing-a-tail-this-image-is-both-a-scientific-milestone-and-a-source-of-wonder-photo-video\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/scientists-capture-interstellar-invader-comet-3i-atlas-growing-a-tail-this-image-is-both-a-scientific-milestone-and-a-source-of-wonder-photo-video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3I\/ATLAS<\/a> zoomed within 19 million miles (30 million kilometers) of Mars. The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a>&#8216;s (ESA) ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) was ready for the closeup, snapping imagery of the interloper using its Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was a very challenging observation for the instrument,&#8221; CaSSIS Principal Investigator Nick Thomas said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/ESA_s_ExoMars_and_Mars_Express_observe_comet_3I_ATLAS\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/ESA_s_ExoMars_and_Mars_Express_observe_comet_3I_ATLAS\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a> released by ESA on Tuesday (Oct. 7). &#8220;The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">comet<\/a> is around 10,000 to 100,000 times fainter than our usual target.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:54.69%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Nw8cdfiasb8KwrH8DNkBvQ.jpg\" alt=\"black and white photo showing a comet as a fuzzy white blob in deep space\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Nw8cdfiasb8KwrH8DNkBvQ.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Nw8cdfiasb8KwrH8DNkBvQ.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Another TGO view of the interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS (the fuzzy blob at in the upper third of the frame, near the center of the field of view), taken on Oct. 3, 2025. (Image credit: ESA\/TGO\/CaSSIS)<\/p>\n<p id=\"1b4f56ed-5b3a-4e74-ac89-ffc52b7bcac8\">Comet 3I\/ATLAS was discovered this past July by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in R\u00edo Hurtado, Chile. The &#8220;3I&#8221; in its name indicates that it&#8217;s just the third confirmed interstellar object observed in our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a>, after <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/oumuamua.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/oumuamua.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1I\/&#8217;Oumuamua<\/a> in 2017 and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-comet-borisov-most-pristine-ever\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-comet-borisov-most-pristine-ever\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2I\/Borisov<\/a> in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"1b4f56ed-5b3a-4e74-ac89-ffc52b7bcac8-1\">Astronomers are keen to learn as much as they can about such visitors, which carry with them information about distant and mysterious realms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every planet, moon, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid<\/a>, comet and lifeform in our solar system share a common origin,&#8221; ESA officials said in the statement. &#8220;But interstellar comets are true outsiders, carrying clues about the formation of worlds far beyond our own.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 3I\/ATLAS&#8217; case, those clues suggest an origin that&#8217;s ancient as well as exotic: Astronomers think it&#8217;s the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/astronomers-say-new-interstellar-visitor-3i-atlas-is-very-likely-to-be-the-oldest-comet-we-have-ever-seen\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/astronomers-say-new-interstellar-visitor-3i-atlas-is-very-likely-to-be-the-oldest-comet-we-have-ever-seen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oldest comet ever observed<\/a>, with a birth that predates that of our own solar system by perhaps three billion years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/YxuuWn7NZfWW7imcRMvsVi.png\" alt=\"A labeled map showing the path interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS will take through our solar system.\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/YxuuWn7NZfWW7imcRMvsVi.png\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/YxuuWn7NZfWW7imcRMvsVi.png\" class=\"expandable\"\/><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/YxuuWn7NZfWW7imcRMvsVi.png\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"expand-button icon-expand-image icon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/YxuuWn7NZfWW7imcRMvsVi.png\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"><\/p>\n<p>A labeled map showing the path interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS will take through our solar system and the observations planned by European probes along the way. (Image credit: ESA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"d402b905-b7c0-4055-8627-3a8c06ff807e\">The observations made by TGO \u2014 which reached <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> in 2016 to sniff out methane and other trace gases in its atmosphere \u2014 were part of a concerted ESA campaign to study 3I\/ATLAS as it cruises through the solar system.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the agency&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18206-mars-express.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18206-mars-express.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars Express<\/a> orbiter, which has been circling the Red Planet since 2003, also attempted to photograph the comet on Oct. 3. Scientists have not yet resolved 3I\/ATLAS in Mars Express imagery, &#8220;partly because these were taken with an exposure time of just 0.5 seconds (the maximum limit for Mars Express) compared to five seconds for ExoMars TGO,&#8221; ESA officials said in the same statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Though our Mars orbiters continue to make impressive contributions to Mars science, it&#8217;s always extra exciting to see them responding to unexpected situations like this one,&#8221; Colin Wilson, Mars Express and ExoMars project scientist at ESA, said in the same statement. &#8220;I look forward to seeing what the data reveals following further analysis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"b2a3460d-972b-47fb-a6fb-37c7c48ee2c6\">Other spacecraft will turn their eyes on the icy object in the coming months as well, including ESA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/35692-esa-juice-facts.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/35692-esa-juice-facts.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JUICE<\/a> probe, which is on its way to Jupiter (its name is short for Jupiter Icy moons Explorer).<\/p>\n<p>JUICE will start looking for 3I\/ATLAS on Nov. 2, just three days after the comet makes its closest approach to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a> (which will come at a distance of 130 million miles, or 210 million km).<\/p>\n<p>3I\/ATLAS will likely be in a more active state at this point, giving JUICE a real chance to resolve it, even though the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a> probe will be farther from the comet than ESA&#8217;s Mars probes were on Oct. 3.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A European Mars probe witnessed the interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS&#8217; Red Planet flyby last week.
