The Eagles could use one of them to trade two more picks inside the top 10.

The Allen compensation will be one pick better than the third selection Melbourne received for James Frawley’s shift to Hawthorn in 2014 and Gold Coast landed for Tom Lynch’s departure for Richmond in 2018.

Essendon also received a band-one pick when Joe Daniher joined the Lions in 2020, with the result pick nine.

Band-one compensation is triggered by a combination of contract length, earnings of more than $900,000 per year and the player’s age.

Allen’s move to Brisbane will be made possible by a mega-trade involving three clubs in which dual Lions premiership defender Brandon Starcevich joined West Coast after a suite of draft picks changed hands in a deal that involved the Eagles’ cross-town rival Fremantle.

The Eagles ability to trade for restricted free agent Starcevich was crucial as it meant any free agency compensation for the loss of Allen was not diluted.

Allen, 26, the Eagles’ co-captain since 2023 following a 53-goal season in which he finished runner-up in the John Worsfold Medal, fills a need for the Lions who had the West Coast key forward in their sights after All-Australian forward Joe Daniher retired in the days after the 2024 grand final.

Camera IconOscar Allen’s move is imminent.
