ChatGPT writes apps, plans trips and browses the web on users\u2019 behalf. And OpenAI is making inroads into shopping, entertainment, education and government services \u2014 laying out plans to become more like a platform than a basic app in its developer conference on Monday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf00083b6nvyaovfyc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As its software spills into more areas of online life, OpenAI is shelling out billions to become a leading player in the physical infrastructure for the AI future. With its latest major investment, announced on Monday, OpenAI will invest in 6 gigawatts of data center capacity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/06\/tech\/amd-openai-nvidia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">powered by AMD chips<\/a>. That deal follows similar agreements with Nvidia and Oracle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf00093b6nqijog7aj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In some ways, OpenAI\u2019s expansion is circular \u2014 it needs new applications to bring in the money to fund its massive computing power. And it needs even more computing resources to power those new tools.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000a3b6nl30i0jee@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            OpenAI\u2019s rapid expansion comes against a challenging backdrop. Tech companies are competing fiercely to build the most powerful AI models, but some investors worry the market is in a bubble. What\u2019s more, OpenAI is competing with tech giants such as Meta that already have vast tech ecosystems to help them expand and earn money from their AI tech. And OpenAI, which is not yet profitable, needs to find a way to continue raking in huge amounts of cash to fund its future endeavors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000b3b6n2wil665j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment on this story.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000d3b6neyxg2g5e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Google, Amazon and Meta laid the groundwork for the modern web by popularizing search engines, e-commerce and social media. OpenAI could do the same for the AI era by adding new capabilities to ChatGPT, which <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/10\/06\/sam-altman-says-chatgpt-has-hit-800m-weekly-active-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">now has<\/a> 800 million weekly active users, according to Altman.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000e3b6n0xbvni5k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            OpenAI wants users to get things done online without ever having to leave ChatGPT, which could one day put the app at the core of how people use technology, much like Apple\u2019s iOS or Google\u2019s Android system. Soon ChatGPT will be able to create user playlists directly on Spotify or browse apartment listings on Zillow right from chats, OpenAI announced on Monday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000f3b6noi7tq7k3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In late September, OpenAI launched a tool called Instant Checkout that lets users buy certain items directly through ChatGPT.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000g3b6ndohgh90w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            ChatGPT also now has a study mode, which tailors prompts and responses for students using the tool for schoolwork. The company is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/21\/tech\/jony-ive-apple-design-chief-openai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">collaborating<\/a> with former Apple design chief Jony Ive on a new AI hardware product, though details are slim. (OpenAI\u2019s peers like Google and Meta are chasing hardware markets by releasing smart glasses with built-in AI assistants.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000i3b6na5tuhkca@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            OpenAI\u2019s trajectory mirrors the rise of Google parent Alphabet, which built its business around indexing the web and now has a foothold in everything from consumer tech devices to health research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000j3b6nc2889ahi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Thomas Thiele, an AI expert at management consulting group Arthur D. Little, said he sees similarities between the two companies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000k3b6ne41gnir9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Google \u201chas become this very broad corporation that has an inevitable footprint in everything we see on the internet,\u201d Thiele said. \u201cOpenAI is also aiming for a much bigger footprint.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000m3b6ngb1un2hr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But scaling up those AI efforts means investing heavily in the sprawling data centers and infrastructure necessary to power them.  OpenAI is shelling out billions of dollars to build a massive physical footprint, with plans for AI data centers across the United States and around the world.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000n3b6nfud7y5t0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe need as much computing power as we can possibly get,\u201d OpenAI President Greg Brockman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2025\/10\/06\/watch-cnbcs-full-interview-with-openai-co-founder-greg-brockman-and-amd-ceo-lisa-su.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told CNBC<\/a> on Monday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000o3b6nenb5npqq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/21\/tech\/openai-oracle-softbank-trump-ai-investment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the company announced a partnership<\/a> with Oracle and SoftBank to invest up to $500 billion in a company called Stargate to build more AI infrastructure in the United States. The group\u2019s first project, a one-million-square-foot data center, is already under construction in Abilene, Texas, with additional sites planned in Texas, New Mexico and the Midwest. OpenAI agreed in July to pay Oracle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/16\/tech\/oracle-larry-ellison-ai-computing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another $300 billion<\/a> over five years to develop additional data center capacity for Stargate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000p3b6nqyu10ez5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last month, OpenAI said it would buy enough Nvidia AI chips to power 10 gigawatts of data center capacity in exchange for a $100 billion investment from the chipmaker. And while analysts expect Nvidia \u2014 the undisputed leader in AI chips \u2014 to remain OpenAI\u2019s core infrastructure partner, the ChatGPT maker is now also hedging its bets with its AMD deal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000q3b6n4w28wr02@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            OpenAI has also signed onto partnerships to build out AI infrastructure abroad, including in the <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/introducing-stargate-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">United Kingdom<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/22\/tech\/nvidia-openai-stargate-ai-uae-intl&#039;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Arab Emirates<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-2236733575.jpg\" alt=\"The Stargate AI data center in Abilene, Texas on September 24, 2025. Google, for example, has the advantage of plugging its AI into popular services like Gmail and Google Docs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000s3b6n5xuqffss@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cChatGPT is great right now, but it\u2019s not ChatGPT versus Copilot. It\u2019s ChatGPT versus the Microsoft bundle,\u201d said Keum. So for OpenAI, working with chipmakers to maintain the most advanced large language models could give it a leg up, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000t3b6nzziagops@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But to carry out its ambitious infrastructure plans, OpenAI needs to continue bringing in a whole lot of cash.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000u3b6nup4k8zyk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The company is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/02\/technology\/openai-deal-500-billion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reportedly<\/a> valued at $500 billion. But it\u2019s still far from profitable; it posted an operating loss of $7.8 billion in the first half of 2025 and is still ramping up data center spending, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theinformation.com%2Farticles%2Fopenais-first-half-results-4-3-billion-sales-2-5-billion-cash-burn&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cclare.duffy%40cnn.com%7Cc81d927975034bc7b3bd08de051ad217%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638953809919335975%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=AKUCKHrLigG5bobGMvYY1URZNqPT8%2Biv%2BzrLd9mfrlo%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a> from tech news site The Information.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggilkmf000v3b6nsz3qvq73@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s unclear whether OpenAI\u2019s bid to turn ChatGPT into an all-encompassing platform will put it on the path to profitability. William Lee, a corporate investor at SuRo Capital, sees it as a \u201cchicken-or-the-egg\u201d problem, he said in an interview with CNN.
