At the time, I thought I was being a Brooklyn hipster going against a wave of sentiment behind the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"c78600f3-cea1-f6e0-11cf-dfeefe1897ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/edm\/edmonton-oilers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a>, who have lost consecutive Stanley Cup Finals; the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"165c24ec-4c6b-36f2-b276-3169cf6ab8f7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/dal\/dallas-stars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas Stars<\/a>, who have lost three straight Western Conference finals; and the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"dd8e7d92-918d-4ec1-4e50-c328fc09467a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/vgk\/vegas-golden-knights\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vegas Golden Knights<\/a>, who added <a data-player-guid=\"7abcd6a1-150b-8797-bc35-db51cfe8939b\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3899937\/mitch-marner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mitch Marner<\/a> in the offseason.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine my surprise when I looked at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/46519134\/nhl-2025-26-season-picks-stanley-cup-divisions-awards\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ESPN hockey family&#8217;s season predictions<\/a> and saw the Avalanche were in fact the chalk of a very crowded field. A hipster picker&#8217;s nightmare, indeed.<\/p>\n<p>As is tradition, I revealed my Stanley Cup selection to a member of that team while at the player media tour in Las Vegas:<\/p>\n<p>Me: I wanted to inform you that I&#8217;m picking you guys to win the Stanley Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Avalanche star <a data-player-guid=\"b9a7136d-88d5-b885-9743-4b4fd4eb53d1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4233563\/cale-makar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cale Makar<\/a>: I appreciate that.<\/p>\n<p>Me: I also wanted to inform you that I&#8217;m not good at making Stanley Cup predictions.<\/p>\n<p>Makar: Well, we&#8217;ll prove that wrong, hopefully.<\/p>\n<p>I have the Avalanche winning the Cup over the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"b7b7b58e-e579-b39d-fb2d-70213dd93502\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/car\/carolina-hurricanes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>, who are in at least their sixth attempt to break through in the Eastern Conference under coach Rod Brind&#8217;amour. I explain why below in my full 2025-26 NHL season standings predictions.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my division-by-division breakdown. Playoff teams are bolded. Good luck to all 32 teams. That&#8217;s despite having <a data-player-guid=\"3a576cdf-1ad7-79e3-04f1-a1fba8ab110a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2563060\/nikita-kucherov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nikita Kucherov<\/a>, second only to <a data-player-guid=\"8e2e22e8-01b6-8acb-8a50-47f4941b52c6\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3895074\/connor-mcdavid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Connor McDavid<\/a> in points (378) over the past three seasons; <a data-player-guid=\"61f1b4b6-e3e7-c8a7-727d-76befab15989\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2976847\/andrei-vasilevskiy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrei Vasilevskiy<\/a>, third in save percentage (.913) in that span; <a data-player-guid=\"6a4f7ea0-fa3c-74b0-8ace-88ed16820441\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5157\/victor-hedman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Victor Hedman<\/a>, seventh in points among defensemen (191) and a defensive rock on which to build; and the rest of a cast that includes <a data-player-guid=\"38078c33-60e9-e2e7-89ab-42daea296554\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3151187\/brayden-point\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brayden Point<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"5b87c69a-acde-a932-ff6d-516a928ae011\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3941973\/anthony-cirelli\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Cirelli<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"d9d6925e-e010-ef75-dfb4-397a161be62c\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4065019\/brandon-hagel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brandon Hagel<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"d4c3125c-aa8f-bfb1-d818-2d409099f51f\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3042083\/jake-guentzel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Guentzel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and behind the bench a guy named Jon Cooper, considered by everyone except Jack Adams Award voters to be the best coach in the league.<\/p>\n<p>The Lightning will win the Atlantic this season handily. Kucherov&#8217;s line with Point and Guentzel averaged over four goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5. The duo of Cirelli and Hagel produced a 61% expected goals percentage together last season. <a data-player-guid=\"3748cf60-54c8-bda1-ff6a-4edec32d468d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4954\/ryan-mcdonagh\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan McDonagh<\/a>, a true glue guy, returned to the scene of his two Stanley Cup wins and had one of the most underappreciated seasons by a defenseman in 2024-25. Tampa Bay gets full seasons of <a data-player-guid=\"c6ba969e-398b-9462-6005-60d9cb1aead9\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3042095\/oliver-bjorkstrand\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oliver Bjorkstrand<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"24c4a74c-86bd-68ce-686c-83193e41ce8f\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3094261\/yanni-gourde\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yanni Gourde<\/a>, and 24-year-old <a data-player-guid=\"91223500-7cb1-3c83-87b1-b30e360f7d03\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697470\/gage-goncalves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gage Goncalves<\/a> has another gear to hit. The Bolts will have at least one new banner to raise in the rafters after this season.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923129_871_ott.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>One of the bottom-feeders in the Atlantic was eventually going to be full enough to rise into contention, and that ended up being the Senators, who made the playoffs last spring for the first time since 2017. They&#8217;ll continue to ascend provided the forward group cooperates.<\/p>\n<p><a data-player-guid=\"589e299d-8600-4982-28d3-185287e39092\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4319858\/brady-tkachuk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brady Tkachuk<\/a>, growing into one of the NHL&#8217;s greatest captains, needs to get back to the mid-30s in goals &#8212; and having linemate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697384\/tim-stutzle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tim St\u00fctzle<\/a> return to the 90-point plateau is key in that. <a data-player-guid=\"42dc23e9-634b-7ded-a000-86a651a7a59f\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4565228\/dylan-cozens\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dylan Cozens<\/a> already showed he&#8217;s going to be the next in the grand tradition of Buffalo Sabres&#8217; transactional regrets after last year&#8217;s trade deadline pickup. But this season hinges on players such as <a data-player-guid=\"aea05973-3e85-dbc2-54a9-243f3f59c537\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4565255\/shane-pinto\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shane Pinto<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"41731d52-2d7f-339e-9b13-65475cbdaff0\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697411\/ridly-greig\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ridly Greig<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"ae763e54-19c7-b0ea-585c-2868bd7fdee5\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4587837\/fabian-zetterlund\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fabian Zetterlund<\/a>, a trade deadline dud whom Ottawa still extended for three seasons.<\/p>\n<p>The forwards being make-or-break means I&#8217;m fairly confident in the Sens&#8217; back end. <a data-player-guid=\"a38ed8e1-891b-3269-8ac9-2784803ac9ec\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697386\/jake-sanderson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Sanderson<\/a> established himself as an elite top-pairing guy, which has allowed <a data-player-guid=\"223db9a1-95e4-894b-8d98-a8f22bcd9f7b\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3900219\/thomas-chabot\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Chabot<\/a> to thrive on a second pairing with <a data-player-guid=\"26ae496b-d0ad-d82e-2f13-09e31b4bc3dc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3025608\/nick-jensen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nick Jensen<\/a>. <a data-player-guid=\"200db70c-45b8-a968-aa96-6001597d018a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4588190\/jordan-spence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jordan Spence<\/a> comes over from the Kings to significantly upgrade what <a data-player-guid=\"5428ef97-a112-2a27-d775-42f4df04eb57\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5073\/travis-hamonic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Travis Hamonic<\/a> gave the Sens last season. <a data-player-guid=\"884b8818-a6be-cfeb-7d80-f38b5c0dac83\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3069285\/linus-ullmark\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Linus Ullmark<\/a> was awesome from December on last season. His crease-mate, <a data-player-guid=\"7fe9537f-3fe7-3f13-9544-c6d47b1078d7\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4894703\/leevi-merilainen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leevi Merilainen<\/a>, could be a sneaky Calder Trophy candidate. There&#8217;s a lot to like here for coach Travis Green, who made major strides in giving this team some defensive structure last season. The Senators are adding while others in the Atlantic are subtracting.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923129_813_tor.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Losing <a data-player-guid=\"7abcd6a1-150b-8797-bc35-db51cfe8939b\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3899937\/mitch-marner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mitch Marner<\/a> means losing points in the standings for the Maple Leafs. He&#8217;s a 100-point winger who led the team in power-play points and was their best penalty-killing forward. Did that transfer over to the postseason? Absolutely not, which is why Marner deserved criticism, though perhaps not to pariah levels. But no one had a higher wins above replacement on the Leafs last regular season than Marner (2.8). I&#8217;m sure that will be celebrated when he returns to Toronto with Vegas on Jan. 23 for a game that&#8217;ll make <a data-player-guid=\"ff6af87a-96de-67cf-1ff1-16ba3c98f8fa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5160\/john-tavares\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Tavares<\/a>&#8216; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/26106979\/islanders-fans-welcome-john-tavares-back-long-island\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">return to Long Island as a Leaf<\/a> look like a concert by The Wiggles by comparison.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Core Four&#8221; lost one but might have gained another. Replacing Mitch Marner with <a data-player-guid=\"9389b9b5-e7c4-3912-aac9-067757f3bb07\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4874919\/matthew-knies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Knies<\/a> appears a bit like the Ninja Turtles swapping Leonardo for Casey Jones, but Knies is primed to pop after a 29-goal campaign. The Leafs know what they have in <a data-player-guid=\"f7054599-31be-43fb-d1c9-c2cd15ce9cba\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114736\/william-nylander\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">William Nylander<\/a>, who is eighth in goals scored (125) over the past three seasons, and they have him next to Tavares, who at 35 is half the player he used to be and is paid as such. If we&#8217;re going by his career cadence, <a data-player-guid=\"dfef08c0-dde0-de14-4b8f-13ca40daef21\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4024123\/auston-matthews\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Auston Matthews<\/a> should score over 60 goals this season. The Leafs would probably settle for seeing the former MVP&#8217;s dangerous dominance after injuries diminished him last season. So would Team USA in the Olympic Games in February.<\/p>\n<p>The Leafs imported <a data-player-guid=\"51b89335-0f91-c633-fe16-f1b1ee170336\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4587580\/matias-maccelli\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matias Maccelli<\/a> from Utah to help replace Marner&#8217;s points, and it still seems like a weird decision to add a guy who had six hits in 55 games to a Craig Berube team. Because everywhere you look on this roster, you&#8217;re starting to see a Craig Berube team: <a data-player-guid=\"4d778634-c367-723e-69cb-adf1d0f766d6\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3943996\/nicolas-roy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nicolas Roy<\/a>, acquired from Vegas in Marner&#8217;s departure, is a very solid 3C. A full season of <a data-player-guid=\"76bc186f-6beb-eccd-67a8-765ebfd87086\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3904175\/brandon-carlo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brandon Carlo<\/a> adds to a blue line full of size and punishment in front of the goaltenders <a data-player-guid=\"b866f010-7de9-dd14-bb10-126690067e01\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4271575\/joseph-woll\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Woll<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"544b2d4d-146e-ac6d-95b0-6d4dfadaaca8\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3067313\/anthony-stolarz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Stolarz<\/a>, who made me a believer last year despite their constant injury concerns. There&#8217;s a sturdiness here that would normally lead to playoff success. The Maple Leafs&#8217; undoing might be not having enough superstar offensive skill around it.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>How much will Mitch Marner&#8217;s departure impact the Maple Leafs&#8217; goal totals this season?\u00a0Carmen Mandato\/Getty Images<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923130_852_fla.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of talent subtractions: Can the Panthers survive without <a data-player-guid=\"2253f50a-7d0f-f0c4-7345-d3da9d3fdf65\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4024854\/matthew-tkachuk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Tkachuk<\/a> until at least December and without <a data-player-guid=\"6317d1c0-624f-90e8-967d-0330ef4ef85c\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3041970\/aleksander-barkov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aleksander Barkov<\/a> until at least April? The answer is &#8220;in this conference, probably.&#8221; But it brings me no joy to report that the Panthers&#8217; three-peat attempt could end with them missing the playoffs entirely, especially given how much I&#8217;ve grown to love the beach vistas and fried fish in covering their past three runs to the Stanley Cup Final.<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers&#8217; most important player this season is <a data-player-guid=\"1ebf6e18-9262-fd26-fa16-ff534d8b7a63\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114722\/sam-reinhart\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Reinhart<\/a>, full stop. Over the past two seasons playing without Barkov on his line (593:21 in 5-on-5 ice time), the Panthers had 0.75 fewer goals per 60 minutes with Reinhart on the ice while breaking even in what they scored and gave up. Coach Paul Maurice seems to favor bumping <a data-player-guid=\"96dbee19-d313-4f86-8aa8-d78db7b5bda4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3852\/brad-marchand\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brad Marchand<\/a> up with <a data-player-guid=\"acd07ff4-2586-c6de-ae2d-07a9908cd9cb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114732\/sam-bennett\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Bennett<\/a> while <a data-player-guid=\"3b401c81-e3cf-8441-2427-5d5dc2492bdd\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4233877\/eetu-luostarinen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eetu Luostarinen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697395\/anton-lundell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anton &#8220;Baby Barkov&#8221; Lundell<\/a> play with Reinhart during Tkachuk&#8217;s absence. When Tkachuk comes back, Reinhart, who has scored 160 goals in 321 games since joining the Panthers, will still have to drive his line in Barkov&#8217;s absence, which isn&#8217;t a given.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s probably something freeing for a two-time defending champ to enter a season with the pressure somewhat diminished by these injuries. The Panthers already had a &#8220;just get in&#8221; mindset for the playoffs. Now, they can hunker down, and rely on a defensive structure fortified by arguably the best top four in the conference &#8212; <a data-player-guid=\"470655a5-12e6-c7b2-7463-918e80d8646b\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114717\/aaron-ekblad\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aaron Ekblad<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3151784\/gustav-forsling\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gus Forsling<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"9db46034-d04d-47a0-9284-2fa5f7f64737\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3041992\/seth-jones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seth Jones<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"972637ca-98c2-ec7e-ff40-20e0634861e9\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3942354\/niko-mikkola\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Niko Mikkola<\/a> &#8212; in front of <a data-player-guid=\"64c24e22-3e0a-e97a-0a79-3ba239e98ad8\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5571\/sergei-bobrovsky\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sergei Bobrovsky<\/a>. GM Bill Zito kept this band together to try to become the NHL&#8217;s first dynasty with three consecutive Cups since the 1980s Islanders. With a healthy Tkachuk and Barkov, the three-peat could be within reach. Health seems to always be a concern, never more so than when <a data-player-guid=\"3a3dca70-afd1-d14a-4f62-91212ab153db\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4233627\/josh-norris\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Josh Norris<\/a> is being relied upon as a critical center. The goaltending is more &#8220;fingers crossed&#8221; than Vezina Trophy-worthy. There are some givens &#8212; <a data-player-guid=\"72a080bb-79b7-688e-78f6-7c4f2dfd5ed6\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4024988\/tage-thompson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tage Thompson<\/a>&#8216;s offensive rampage to ensure an Olympic roster spot, <a data-player-guid=\"ed5bf127-88eb-aa19-1899-b618ec3c9abb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4294163\/rasmus-dahlin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rasmus Dahlin<\/a> potentially being the Norris Trophy flavor of the season &#8212; but the incremental improvements GM Kevyn Adams has made to this roster don&#8217;t seem to answer its many questions.<\/p>\n<p>That established, the hockey analytics community loves the Sabres this season more than data scraping in Python. Most fancy stats analysts I read have them finishing with over 90 points, with my friends at Evolving Hockey going as high as 99 points. This is a team that&#8217;s had abundant weak links for years and seems, maybe, to have patched them up for a change. Add in Dahlin and Thompson, who both profile like superstars, and there you go. Would I put money on it? Hell no. But it&#8217;s something to watch for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923131_247_mtl.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Canadiens also broke out last season to qualify for the playoffs, losing to the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"cbe677ee-361e-91b4-5cae-6c4c30044743\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/wsh\/washington-capitals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Capitals<\/a> in five games. I think this talented young team takes a step back this season before an eventual leap forward. The Canadiens can&#8217;t defend. They&#8217;re a playoff team whose expected goals against last season at even strength (2.87, 31st) ranked behind the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"8c0b5061-09c3-2e5c-529b-274a22d1b6bb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/sj\/san-jose-sharks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Jose Sharks<\/a>, who were disinterested in playing defense at all. They were fourth from the bottom in scoring chances allowed. I don&#8217;t think they&#8217;ve done much to remedy that. In fact, it might have gotten worse, despite all that <a data-player-guid=\"3b78c122-c913-f56d-3f95-127781ccd833\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4352732\/noah-dobson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Noah Dobson<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"218ed933-e749-38d0-af92-e497e7f14756\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5216860\/ivan-demidov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ivan Demidov<\/a> can bring plenty to the team offensively. There&#8217;s only so much that <a data-player-guid=\"3919cc6e-3453-a7b4-f63b-a2413c9f8737\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3942714\/sam-montembeault\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Montembeault<\/a> can paper over with goaltending that saw him save 25 goals above expected last season.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923131_313_det.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The latest amendment to GM Steve Yzerman&#8217;s &#8220;Yzerplan,&#8221; which the Red Wings have executed since 2019: Finally getting <a data-player-guid=\"445344d3-9c4d-d2ce-bf82-f196646b9348\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2590824\/john-gibson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Gibson<\/a> out of Anaheim for the last two years of his contract. Detroit used four goalies last season, and <a data-player-guid=\"c9ffa867-9043-5cca-b493-c933db6f4250\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5734\/cam-talbot\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cam Talbot<\/a> was the only keeper. This new goalie battery on a Todd McLellan-coached team gave me pause, but not as much as Gibson&#8217;s inability to stay in the lineup does. Otherwise, it&#8217;s another season with some young bright spots &#8212; <a data-player-guid=\"61163f0f-8e0b-422c-8e43-080400153fc6\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4565227\/moritz-seider\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Moritz Seider<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"e1c1d4c1-2b78-3f3f-8241-54637aec3431\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4874720\/simon-edvinsson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Simon Edvinsson<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"7a9cfc92-e4f8-3185-b17d-0b3111a76fb4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697385\/lucas-raymond\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lucas Raymond<\/a> and hopefully <a data-player-guid=\"11662b45-a2eb-3f2c-99ca-69a8ab216e86\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5080152\/marco-kasper\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marco Kasper<\/a>, or else Detroit&#8217;s in real trouble this season. The Wings don&#8217;t have the talent to make the playoffs but have enough of it to limit their lottery odds. Which is unfortunately the most palpable result of the Yzerplan.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923132_774_bos.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I might be low on the Bruins here. If the defense corps is healthy in front of <a data-player-guid=\"7965a045-dc71-3744-8110-96c1600dfff6\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4712036\/jeremy-swayman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeremy Swayman<\/a>, who had a proper training camp this time, they could grind out some wins for first-year coach Marco Sturm. And by &#8220;defense corps&#8221; we essentially mean <a data-player-guid=\"ed367e20-c1e5-9528-425e-2e2e3285a1db\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3988803\/charlie-mcavoy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charlie McAvoy<\/a>, who was limited to 50 games last season while posting his lowest points-per-60 minutes average in six seasons. But even a return to Norris contention for Charlie Mac isn&#8217;t going to turn the tide for Boston, whose overall depth is that of a team which went on a selling spree at last season&#8217;s trade deadline. <a data-player-guid=\"543d2b9d-a469-eeb7-6192-b3cb9eecec17\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114778\/david-pastrnak\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Pastrnak<\/a> is now Ilya Kovalchuk on the Atlanta Thrashers: someone who&#8217;s good for 50 goals and a 100-point pace no matter who surrounds him, but in service of a basement dweller.<\/p>\n<p>METROPOLITAN DIVISION<\/p>\n<p><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"b7b7b58e-e579-b39d-fb2d-70213dd93502\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/car\/carolina-hurricanes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"beb0cb35-4d9f-a5e8-9e7b-d5ca97e51d93\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/nj\/new-jersey-devils\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Jersey Devils<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"cbe677ee-361e-91b4-5cae-6c4c30044743\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/wsh\/washington-capitals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Capitals<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"4e807ac9-f3b7-8e3b-8549-441c1e604c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/nyr\/new-york-rangers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Rangers<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"724d5dd5-197c-6f1d-29ca-a0b4f25eb1b6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/cbj\/columbus-blue-jackets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"dab46111-bd72-868c-eff2-340e3cfc4d62\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/nyi\/new-york-islanders\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Islanders<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"472f7324-d0ab-e645-bce6-a3cd3dcb110d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/pit\/pittsburgh-penguins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"68aba012-4e93-9371-6861-1bb9a63cfb11\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/phi\/philadelphia-flyers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whereas the Atlantic Division has some upwardly mobile teams below the contenders, the Metro feels like four teams with strong playoff chances and then four teams those top four will mine for points &#8212; with one exception.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923132_235_car.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Hurricanes are tied with the Oilers and Golden Knights for the best odds to make the playoffs on ESPN BET, which says as much about the relative strengths of the Metro and Pacific as it does about these teams. I infamously picked the Hurricanes to miss the playoffs in last year&#8217;s column, and hey, it&#8217;s not like they made it all the way to the conference finals to make me look like a total idiot. Still seeking that playoff scoring solution, Tulsky last season landed <a data-player-guid=\"2ad35fdf-efd9-2089-3381-cc30d32cf983\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5428\/taylor-hall\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor Hall<\/a> from Chicago and <a data-player-guid=\"a4c68008-1a67-be00-9cd1-71441f4820f8\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3899938\/mikko-rantanen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mikko Rantanen<\/a> from Colorado for <a data-player-guid=\"f5f950eb-6133-1728-2029-867e0fa3a8d8\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4233586\/martin-necas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Necas<\/a>, but traded Rantanen after just 13 games because he wouldn&#8217;t commit long-term in Raleigh.<\/p>\n<p>That resulted in Carolina getting <a data-player-guid=\"fb994320-a3fe-3bd3-8652-0165f2882ee1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4874899\/logan-stankoven\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Logan Stankoven<\/a>, an outstanding 22-year-old forward, and a bunch of picks from Dallas. And after searching the free agent options for top-line left wing help, the Hurricanes went down a tier and signed Nikolaj Elhers from the Jets, a play-driving winger with some injury history who&#8217;s nonetheless well suited for what they do. They money they didn&#8217;t spend on Rantanen went to Ehlers and defenseman <a data-player-guid=\"f710d2ac-adbf-7223-7464-8fe997ddcc54\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4352770\/kandre-miller\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">K&#8217;Andre Miller<\/a>, a pending restricted free agent acquired from the Rangers partially through one of the first-rounders they received from Dallas. He joins a deep defense corps bolstered by one of the NHL&#8217;s best rookies in <a data-player-guid=\"20807f11-8103-3841-bb22-86b1f25ae65d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5188393\/alexander-nikishin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Nikishin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are some points of concern with the Canes, starting with second-line center. <a data-player-guid=\"5282cbb4-188d-1aaa-cfde-c089bb7e6618\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4352692\/jesperi-kotkaniemi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jesperi Kotkaniemi<\/a> hasn&#8217;t been the answer. They&#8217;ve been using Stankoven there and might still try <a data-player-guid=\"01f3776e-2a12-35e2-bdec-9cccabe71701\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697396\/seth-jarvis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seth Jarvis<\/a> as an internal solution. This might be where Tulsky tries to use his cap space and draft capital to improve the team before the deadline. Or perhaps that&#8217;ll be in goal, where <a data-player-guid=\"d808c1c0-e457-5587-c5a1-d2fba1a21c13\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2517899\/frederik-andersen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Frederik Andersen<\/a> remains dominant but a constant injury concern, with <a data-player-guid=\"114c5f19-965b-9b5b-8f2c-de950f59380b\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4565259\/pyotr-kochetkov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pyotr Kochetkov<\/a> yet to show he&#8217;s anything but a downgrade.<\/p>\n<p>Rod Brind&#8217;Amour has led the Hurricanes to a .604 points percentage or better in six of his seven season as head coach. He has led them to the conference finals three times without ever playing for the Stanley Cup. The Canes will kick that wall down this season with a tenacious, talented group that has room for improvement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923132_12_nj.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Are the Devils keeping their powder dry for a run at <a data-player-guid=\"1c945598-5537-0cf5-99e5-32f1715bdc5f\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4320548\/quinn-hughes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Quinn Hughes<\/a>? They&#8217;d be silly not to if there&#8217;s even a small chance that Vancouver trades him to &#8220;play with his brothers&#8221; before his 2027 unrestricted free agency. But the reason the Devils tinkered with the roster instead of taking big swings is likely because they like what they have already and want to see what it looks like with a healthy <a data-player-guid=\"2f88918b-3298-ca4b-e0c1-7f045469143d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4565222\/jack-hughes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Hughes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They were 33-23-6 with Hughes in the lineup until his injury on March 2, creating a points cushion that enabled them to still make the playoffs despite losing 12 of their final 21 games of the season. He has been over 3.2 points per 60 minutes in each of his past four seasons. Hughes is everything for the Devils, from being their offensive engine to being the reason they just paid a 22-year-old defenseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/46468363\/luke-hughes-love-play-brothers-devils\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$63 million<\/a> for services yet rendered. If <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4874719\/luke-hughes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luke Hughes<\/a> is happy, Jack&#8217;s hopefully happy.<\/p>\n<p>New Jersey has a deeply talented blue line and the goaltending tandem of <a data-player-guid=\"e13da90d-d340-fa1f-7454-c189c39c6edb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5452\/jacob-markstrom\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jacob Markstrom<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"d23f8458-3d47-ed10-1cea-7cd8eda5494b\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5111\/jake-allen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Allen<\/a>, who took their team save percentage from 30th to 11th. GM Tom Fitzgerald had a nice signing in former Oiler <a data-player-guid=\"fa4e37db-a9da-b20c-d64a-14ebc7a9e127\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3067951\/connor-brown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Connor Brown<\/a> and has anointed <a data-player-guid=\"ea484d1c-0469-e63a-8a75-1fa1da152d46\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4233568\/cody-glass\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cody Glass<\/a> as the third-line center to start the season. If the bottom six is better and the team has better injury luck, the Devils are poised to make noise this season. Or, failing that, just trade for Quinn, I guess.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>As Jack Hughes goes, so go the New Jersey Devils.\u00a0Elsa\/Getty Images<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923132_747_wsh.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Capitals don&#8217;t know what the future holds for 40-year-old <a data-player-guid=\"71847c2f-dbf5-92bd-a95f-3857464ad180\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3101\/alex-ovechkin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a>, who is now the NHL&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/44560659\/capitals-alex-ovechkin-passes-wayne-gretzky-nhl-goal-king\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all-time leading goal scorer<\/a> at 897 and in the last year of his contract. But Capitals coach Spencer Carbery told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3XuxBV-ZQYk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ESPN&#8217;s &#8220;The Drop<\/a>&#8221; that he&#8217;s relieved there isn&#8217;t another overriding Ovechkin story that his team is experiencing every night on the road, with &#8220;Ovi&#8217;s last season&#8221; replacing The Great Chase.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Definitely. No doubt. If that was the case then every building you go into, especially the Western teams, it&#8217;ll be the last time definitely that he goes into those arenas,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the Capitals can remain focused on repeating their incredible 111-point campaign from last season, which saw them advance to the second round of the playoffs. GM Chris Drury played hardball with veterans who had trade protection, resulting in captain <a data-player-guid=\"efa83dc6-c746-7f3c-a9c5-ed6f011d0500\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2976839\/jacob-trouba\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jacob Trouba<\/a> and franchise pillar <a data-player-guid=\"01f315d6-b963-53d5-7e42-f4361afa2d0d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5833\/chris-kreider\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Kreider<\/a> flying to Anaheim and former Ranger <a data-player-guid=\"edddea19-8c2d-f283-933b-d0f4193c80f0\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2590852\/jt-miller\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">J.T. Miller<\/a> returning from Vancouver to say, &#8220;I&#8217;m the captain now.&#8221; Coach Peter Laviolette paid with his job for the Rangers&#8217; descent from the conference finals to outside the postseason. Enter Mike Sullivan, another former Ranger (as assistant coach from 2009 to 2013), who escaped the rebuilding Penguins.<\/p>\n<p>The Rangers have enough talent in the right places to overcome significant lineup holes and earn a playoff spot this season. Miller&#8217;s arrival helped pull <a data-player-guid=\"f5d7992b-2354-c15c-a899-0ef26e78018d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2562637\/mika-zibanejad\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mika Zibanejad<\/a> out of a nightmarish season. <a data-player-guid=\"4bccfde6-1664-349b-a37a-ef9df11daee8\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697468\/will-cuylle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Will Cuylle<\/a> is burgeoning star who&#8217;ll take over most of what Kreider was doing in the lineup. The line of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697382\/alexis-lafreniere\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexis Lafreni\u00e8re<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"ab433452-d40f-93a3-8915-2b559768ff01\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3891952\/artemi-panarin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemi Panarin<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"34c5fe7b-6eea-8d38-7f2b-8e5f2e8573a6\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2563036\/vincent-trocheck\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vincent Trocheck<\/a> is a dependable force &#8212; and Panarin is in a contract year, too.<\/p>\n<p>The Rangers need <a data-player-guid=\"2424f9ee-4f36-f74b-50a7-107f6efc1159\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4197146\/adam-fox\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adam Fox<\/a> to recapture the magic of his Norris Trophy form, and importing Kings defenseman <a data-player-guid=\"cf31a708-6c68-9479-f125-f371f6055e31\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3942292\/vladislav-gavrikov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vladislav Gavrikov<\/a> as a free agent should do the trick. But the season probably rests on the shoulder pads of 24-year-old <a data-player-guid=\"dabc2be4-a40b-3b18-a2c1-a4ac1a3cbe19\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4894366\/jet-greaves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jet Greaves<\/a>, and whether he&#8217;s good enough to wrest the crease from <a data-player-guid=\"3e20586c-3384-02ac-5695-0d14139ecaf9\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3151038\/elvis-merzlikins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elvis Merzlikins<\/a>. Frankly, it&#8217;s about time this organization had an infusion of personality, and it arrives in the form of 18-year-old <a data-player-guid=\"d6f93475-4449-3b08-9eb7-576170d0e60f\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5291933\/matthew-schaefer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Schaefer<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/45598333\/2025-nhl-draft-pick-tracker-analysis-32-teams-7-rounds-scouting-notes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No. 1 pick<\/a> has boundless enthusiasm and charisma to spare. This is largely the same roster that Lamoriello created, which finished with 82 points last season. A full season of <a data-player-guid=\"e8b80c09-798e-7e51-7e6b-f7ec54414632\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3899946\/mathew-barzal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mathew Barzal<\/a> probably gets the Islanders slightly more than that, but not much more.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923135_302_pit.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no point in assessing the playoff potential of the Penguins, whose roster is like a random name generator surrounding a core of six veterans stuck in hockey purgatory under new head coach Dan Muse. The entire conversation about this team will be about what happens to that core by the trade deadline, most specifically the fates of <a data-player-guid=\"706fa356-342c-1e1e-dce4-1bdd4d70a33f\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114\/sidney-crosby\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sidney Crosby<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"a634ec22-216e-df94-c6a5-a14f2daa7059\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3124\/evgeni-malkin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Evgeni Malkin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone around Sid wants the legend to remove himself from this narrative, join a Stanley Cup contender and thrive in the postseason spotlight again. But he has steadfastly dedicated himself to seeing things through in Pittsburgh as a Shein version of the Capitals&#8217; retool around Ovechkin. I&#8217;m still optimistic that he&#8217;ll change his mind. I&#8217;m even more convinced that Malkin will move this season, especially after he cast an appreciative eye toward the fun <a data-player-guid=\"96dbee19-d313-4f86-8aa8-d78db7b5bda4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3852\/brad-marchand\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brad Marchand<\/a> was having last season. You know, with the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"195561c3-b7d9-935e-0623-8f0a00357080\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/fla\/florida-panthers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Florida Panthers<\/a>, the team near one of Malkin&#8217;s homes in Miami and that currently has an opening for a veteran No. 1 center. Just sayin&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923135_752_phi.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The most that the Flyers can hope for this season is the continued progress of its young players as new coach Rick Tocchet power-drills fundamentals into them. But the Flyers aren&#8217;t likely to grab too many headlines in Philadelphia this season. The Avs have their No. 2 center in <a data-player-guid=\"83199891-a397-4081-b4e3-2c7db9342185\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5798\/brock-nelson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brock Nelson<\/a> after years of post-<a data-player-guid=\"cf7eecb0-c872-4e75-730d-6f4fe12de605\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5349\/nazem-kadri\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nazem Kadri<\/a> searching. They have a goalie in <a data-player-guid=\"250fa49f-ed9a-33e3-febf-32e44e220753\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3904177\/mackenzie-blackwood\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mackenzie Blackwood<\/a> who has at least the potential to be the guy who might not win you a series but won&#8217;t lose it for you either.<\/p>\n<p>(Results are pending on that last one.)<\/p>\n<p>Can <a data-player-guid=\"f5f950eb-6133-1728-2029-867e0fa3a8d8\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4233586\/martin-necas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Necas<\/a> give them 75% of what <a data-player-guid=\"a4c68008-1a67-be00-9cd1-71441f4820f8\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3899938\/mikko-rantanen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mikko Rantanen<\/a> did, as was the gamble in trading their star winger last season? Can <a data-player-guid=\"c68c306f-1656-8c31-d771-ba122316f116\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4063401\/samuel-girard\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Samuel Girard<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"f9e54bd5-9939-57c1-9e47-5f654b872e1d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2590829\/josh-manson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Josh Manson<\/a> be the rock-solid second paring behind the ridiculously good Makar and <a data-player-guid=\"f9589223-0cc6-e352-a09d-47f441cb7faf\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3096249\/devon-toews\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Devon Toews<\/a>? Can <a data-player-guid=\"26c6ad58-d505-2fa4-f01f-04df40d36431\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2562609\/gabriel-landeskog\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gabriel Landeskog<\/a>, one of last season&#8217;s most heartwarming stories that lacked a storybook ending, become Gabriel Landeskog again?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m saying yes to all of this. I&#8217;m also putting my faith in an aggressive front office to once again bolster this lineup before the postseason if necessary, whether incrementally or with a big swing. Say, did you hear Nathan MacKinnon grew up in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia? I wonder if that&#8217;s relevant to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/46510617\/sidney-crosby-pittsburgh-penguins-uncertain-future\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">any other current events in the NHL<\/a> &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/34143958\/how-nathan-mackinnon-molded-colorado-avalanche-stanley-cup-champions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">winning the Stanley Cup in 2022<\/a>, the Avalanche have been eliminated in the first round to Seattle, the second round to Dallas and the first round to Dallas again. That last seven-game loss to the Stars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?si=DQhDo0gqI20S4X1E&amp;v=ot8IRVlhatc&amp;feature=youtu.be\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">left MacKinnon &#8220;shocked&#8221;<\/a> and unsure how to process it. That&#8217;s exactly what you want to hear as an Avalanche fan. Palpable disgust is what fueled MacKinnon&#8217;s first Cup win. The tank&#8217;s nearly full again.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923135_632_dal.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The first question that needs to be asked about the Stars is whether they made three straight Western Conference finals because they were coached by Pete DeBoer or because they were a three-time conference finalist that he happened to coach. We&#8217;ll find out now that DeBoer is somewhere muttering things about <a data-player-guid=\"b78ca77d-0b31-4397-94a0-e73bf476af03\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4196914\/jake-oettinger\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Oettinger<\/a> under his breath while Glen Gulutzan, an Oilers assistant who coached the Stars from 2011 to 2013, takes over.<\/p>\n<p>The Stars are still in the sweet spot for NHL teams: productive veterans and outstanding young players and a franchise goalie combining for a Cup-worthy team. Last season saw them add a superstar in Mikko Rantanen, and anyone who watched the playoffs understands his postseason impact.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Dallas has room for improvement. Teams of scientists are still trying to determine what happened to <a data-player-guid=\"cbb8bb2a-c9cf-335f-857d-52493542775a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4874740\/wyatt-johnston\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wyatt Johnston<\/a> in the 2025 playoffs, mustering four goals in 18 games with a minus-16. The <a data-player-guid=\"eabc39b5-92c2-3105-bbf4-70be2f6d55c8\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5161\/matt-duchene\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Duchene<\/a> regression seems inevitable. They&#8217;re going to have to replace what they lost in <a data-player-guid=\"26bb5995-854c-a439-b074-363e42259aaf\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5831\/mikael-granlund\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mikael Granlund<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"aa32be5f-9e11-b164-6139-c4b6bef24a6e\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4272192\/mason-marchment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mason Marchment<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"76cc5b7a-70d9-7f58-d110-0f48aac45edd\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4969\/evgenii-dadonov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Evgenii Dadonov<\/a>. The young standouts such as <a data-player-guid=\"6fbe8989-4227-423e-be38-42bf83bbc924\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4565239\/thomas-harley\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Harley<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"27594eb0-8fa7-3c83-8e43-20892a0e3c5f\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5080162\/lian-bichsel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lian Bichsel<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"d44d0c2a-837d-390d-8d30-6eef17a1348e\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697413\/mavrik-bourque\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mavrik Bourque<\/a> must continue to level up.<\/p>\n<p>Again: The Dallas Stars can win the Stanley Cup this season if the mix is right and the path is friendly. I&#8217;m a believer that the core they&#8217;ve built there &#8212; <a data-player-guid=\"a3f54f80-52fc-a29a-91ef-a45132c179cf\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4024857\/clayton-keller\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clayton Keller<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"b018dc46-e45e-37a3-8a48-bfab6622937e\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4874723\/dylan-guenther\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dylan Guenther<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"73fac2cc-3934-3b3d-a741-2d53f59b2a04\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5080143\/logan-cooley\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Logan Cooley<\/a> &#8212; is trending to be the type of elite trio that powers a team to the postseason. Keller and <a data-player-guid=\"db0f9f08-1083-4219-38f2-56ff5ab79e71\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114770\/nick-schmaltz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nick Schmaltz<\/a> anchor one line. Cooley, whose ceiling increasingly looks to be a <a data-player-guid=\"2f88918b-3298-ca4b-e0c1-7f045469143d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4565222\/jack-hughes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Hughes<\/a>-adjacent player, is in the middle of Guenther and <a data-player-guid=\"2a81e025-9e30-3ebd-941a-a4f3c094df65\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697438\/jj-peterka\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JJ Peterka<\/a>, their big offseason acquisition from the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"06b99a18-3096-3b1f-d339-adab9ac51614\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/buf\/buffalo-sabres\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It gets a wee thinner at forward after that, with more role players (<a data-player-guid=\"44936925-d11c-cd25-0530-4c300cb93fb4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3899951\/lawson-crouse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lawson Crouse<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"1a99404e-ebb0-41b6-188a-ddd2d3005100\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3096236\/brandon-tanev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brandon Tanev<\/a>) than impact players. But that&#8217;s fine. The Mammoth don&#8217;t need to be the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"195561c3-b7d9-935e-0623-8f0a00357080\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/fla\/florida-panthers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Florida Panthers<\/a>. They just need their top two lines to be their motor.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of the Panthers, the delightful <a data-player-guid=\"ebdf5850-0f88-0c0a-51e2-b02dd81c7364\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3024798\/nate-schmidt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nate Schmidt<\/a> joins a Mammoth back end that was besieged by injuries last season. A full season of <a data-player-guid=\"047bfeb7-0ad0-918b-d084-4b3907bc533a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4378683\/sean-durzi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sean Durzi<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"c38c90d9-1534-d555-e183-5ea3a7e66ccc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3941974\/john-marino\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Marino<\/a> is essential to Utah&#8217;s success. I&#8217;m also interested in seeing if and when rookie <a data-player-guid=\"4a5aa178-b33f-3b15-a3cd-7217fe66a682\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5080177\/maveric-lamoureux\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maveric Lamoureux<\/a>, a really talented 6-foot-6 shutdown defender, makes his mark. Fingers crossed that <a data-player-guid=\"2c69f173-a8a9-5ca7-d88a-b4a7934bb24e\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3942065\/karel-vejmelka\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Karel Vejmelka<\/a> gives the Mammoth another strong season with a more dependable backup in <a data-player-guid=\"276b1cf2-187d-3f63-c537-974eed556d17\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114996\/vitek-vanecek\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vitek Vanecek<\/a>. The Central has boasted five playoff teams twice in the past four seasons.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923136_746_wpg.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Jets are easily the best team of these three, and they&#8217;re my pick to make the playoffs again on the strength of <a data-player-guid=\"feaf12c0-a98b-12a5-23d5-ffa780a14b84\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3020225\/connor-hellebuyck\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Connor Hellebuyck<\/a>, who rightfully won the Hart and the Vezina last season. His side quest to the Olympics means some extra physical and mental strain, but he&#8217;s going to give the Jets at least 60 games of the league&#8217;s best goaltending. He&#8217;s on that McDavid and MacKinnon level of being able to will a team into the postseason on his own.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;ll have to be great because the team in front of him is diminished after <a data-player-guid=\"72c4eb2a-4a67-a554-9d3a-35695339fc11\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114741\/nikolaj-ehlers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nikolaj Ehlers<\/a> left in free agency. Maybe that would be further diminished: The Jets were 20th in 5-on-5 scoring chances last season and 13th in expected goals. <a data-player-guid=\"fed5ad3c-bfe3-b3a7-2bfb-bcaeda9f3f4a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3899952\/kyle-connor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Connor<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"c4473399-439a-e4eb-ecf4-35464c8043d0\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2562632\/mark-scheifele\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Scheifele<\/a> combined for 80 goals last season. Without Ehlers, they need continued support from <a data-player-guid=\"0045287b-8071-31fc-300d-b1fd5ef91f26\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4233583\/gabriel-vilardi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gabriel Vilardi<\/a>, and more of it from <a data-player-guid=\"1885aa83-5427-3d43-ba54-9bd3988696ce\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697392\/cole-perfetti\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cole Perfetti<\/a>. (What <a data-player-guid=\"1819e3b7-049b-eece-271b-0829c481f92e\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3669\/jonathan-toews\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Toews<\/a> gives them as a No. 2 center at this stage of his career is anyone&#8217;s guess.)<\/p>\n<p>In the end, they&#8217;re solid enough defensively in front of the league&#8217;s best goaltender that this offense can get them into the playoffs, but it&#8217;s going to be a precipitous drop from last season&#8217;s 116-point campaign.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923136_182_stl.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Blues were one shot away from eliminating the Jets in Game 7 of the first round before losing in double overtime, and this is the first time I realized how ironic that must have been for <a data-player-guid=\"e4702732-bb38-d1cc-073d-dbc74b98ad7d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2590874\/jordan-binnington\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jordan Binnington<\/a> after the 4 Nations Face-Off.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot that I like about the Blues, beginning with coach Jim Montgomery. They went 35-18-7 after he abruptly took over from Drew Bannister just 22 games into the season. He got them to hunker down defensively in front of Binnington, as the Blues were fourth in NHL in goals against per 60 minutes at 5-on-5. <a data-player-guid=\"21f77b1d-d6e8-34ba-94da-86ae0e188551\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5080171\/jimmy-snuggerud\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jimmy Snuggerud<\/a> is going to be a rookie sensation and will give this team valuable secondary scoring behind the usual suspects like <a data-player-guid=\"1027ed05-4854-6a8c-793e-58131f9b39ac\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4233637\/robert-thomas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Thomas<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"51ccfdfe-4663-4009-1dc0-486c910294b9\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4062251\/jordan-kyrou\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jordan Kyrou<\/a>. I&#8217;m not in love with the aging curve of the Blues&#8217; top three defensemen, but there&#8217;s no question that <a data-player-guid=\"753bf917-3630-5588-6eb1-e1a989140254\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3069341\/colton-parayko\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colton Parayko<\/a> played himself back onto everyone&#8217;s radar and the team hit a new gear once GM Doug Armstrong rescued <a data-player-guid=\"c64bd9bd-7da4-a553-bfd7-823c35dd6d5f\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5495\/cam-fowler\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cam Fowler<\/a> from the Ducks.<\/p>\n<p>I have St. Louis right on the cusp of the playoff bubble. If the Blues make it, no surprise. If they barely miss it, no surprise. Heck, if they finish second in the division, no surprise because Montgomery gets that out of teams. But Monty&#8217;s teams can also sometimes underwhelm you offensively without stars doing star things &#8212; see <a data-player-guid=\"543d2b9d-a469-eeb7-6192-b3cb9eecec17\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114778\/david-pastrnak\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Pastrnak<\/a> during the coach&#8217;s time with the Bruins. The Blues don&#8217;t have that guy, and they ended up 27th in expected goals per 60 minutes last season at 5-on-5. I think they barely miss.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923136_489_min.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Wild will spend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/46441998\/nhl-2025-26-kirill-kaprizov-contract-record-breaking-winners-losers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$136 million<\/a> to keep <a data-player-guid=\"6286ddfa-605f-e479-45fb-e95c7b07f8aa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3942335\/kirill-kaprizov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kirill Kaprizov<\/a> through 2033-34. Bold prediction: At some point during that run, the Wild will have built a Stanley Cup contender around him. You can see the broad strokes of it now. <a data-player-guid=\"0bd2a8d5-ff38-355a-865a-2ac83ddff35e\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697449\/brock-faber\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brock Faber<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"3d33c89c-e334-3e09-9538-63f8788e6502\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5206642\/zeev-buium\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zeev Buium<\/a> anchoring the defense. <a data-player-guid=\"38ef25a9-743a-3be4-8f04-33fae3a648a1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4874737\/jesper-wallstedt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jesper Wallstedt<\/a> as the franchise goalie. Offense up front from <a data-player-guid=\"2cae8346-0534-7669-2348-729c387d8867\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4565233\/matt-boldy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Boldy<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"4c2ef362-b102-38ce-a90d-6e4815d4a1f3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5080172\/danila-yurov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Danila Yurov<\/a> and &#8230; uh &#8230; is <a data-player-guid=\"b8254a8e-9590-3171-acae-66fbef51f0b5\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697391\/marco-rossi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marco Rossi<\/a> officially not going to be traded?<\/p>\n<p>Point being that this feels like a transition year for the Wild. I&#8217;m not a huge fan of their offensive depth beyond Kaprizov, assuming he remains healthy. Which he better be, because with him limited to 41 games last season, the Wild were the worst 5-on-5 team offensively in the NHL, with expected goals percentage 29th. He was part of those offseason additions a year ago that had us all convinced the Predators were going to be a force in the Western Conference, until it became apparent that the Lightning guessed right on <a data-player-guid=\"7e97aa2a-84fa-e964-077d-412552fde579\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5037\/steven-stamkos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Stamkos<\/a>&#8216; decline, <a data-player-guid=\"3177b29a-8b89-7236-c3b2-ce9eea3baaef\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2976856\/brady-skjei\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brady Skjei<\/a> was a product of the Hurricanes&#8217; system and <a data-player-guid=\"b81d8c2a-ea47-fe37-f22c-d89c1d73233f\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2967072\/jonathan-marchessault\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Marchessault<\/a>&#8216;s game is much better when surrounded by contender-level talent. Factor in <a data-player-guid=\"346a82b8-d1c3-758f-53ff-1bf7287b88bb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3042109\/juuse-saros\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Juuse Saros<\/a> playing to below replacement level, and Nashville was cooked like Hattie B&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Are the Predators going to be better than 68 points this season? Undoubtedly yes if Saros has an average season and the team isn&#8217;t out of the playoff race by early December like it was last season, when it went 7-16-6 in its first 29 games. But that won&#8217;t be good enough to make the playoffs in the Central. Does Trotz need to have some tough conversations with players who have term and trade protection about the direction of this team? Or is there any way the team&#8217;s next wave &#8212; such as <a data-player-guid=\"5bcf673e-5ede-3655-af3d-196e3849d690\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5149189\/matthew-wood\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Wood<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"c7e5c584-a081-319c-94bc-1eb68c160148\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4874736\/fedor-svechkov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fedor Svechkov<\/a> and eventually <a data-player-guid=\"963af86f-520a-3fb9-9f5d-a5c2257b61bb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5291937\/brady-martin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brady Martin<\/a> &#8212; breaks out in time to maximize the years left on those veterans&#8217; contracts?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923137_460_chi.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, some reasons to watch the Blackhawks beyond <a data-player-guid=\"81ddb57f-8400-39c1-b2d4-82079f1ae2c0\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5149125\/connor-bedard\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Connor Bedard<\/a>, who might not spend the next seven months feeling dejected and competitively lonely. <a data-player-guid=\"eaefc73c-7040-3079-8649-1888c3d490f1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5080157\/frank-nazar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Frank Nazar<\/a> is legit, although he&#8217;s going to have the same &#8220;center who should really be a winger&#8221; discourse surrounding him that Bedard does. I want to see what <a data-player-guid=\"485c72ef-7177-3dc7-8e4d-42552a87bb63\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5080173\/sam-rinzel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Rinzel<\/a> does as a 6-foot-4 power-play point man. The Blackhawks are going to be terrible &#8212; hopefully less so under new coach Jeff Blashill &#8212; but at least we can tune in for glimpses of the future rather than a bunch of veteran placeholders orbiting Bedard for 82 games.<\/p>\n<p>PACIFIC DIVISION<\/p>\n<p><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"c78600f3-cea1-f6e0-11cf-dfeefe1897ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/edm\/edmonton-oilers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"dd8e7d92-918d-4ec1-4e50-c328fc09467a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/vgk\/vegas-golden-knights\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vegas Golden Knights<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"47ce4014-1c1f-c67f-bfe6-ec95d5f57a87\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/la\/los-angeles-kings\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"64856285-41c1-61e8-4b7f-72a347c8c018\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/van\/vancouver-canucks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"183c31f7-2eed-15c0-7fa1-a568d20bf3ad\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/ana\/anaheim-ducks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anaheim Ducks<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"1b1346bb-9cad-dd44-4de5-91724595e92b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/cgy\/calgary-flames\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Calgary Flames<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"ca912ee8-d2a3-3e84-831e-1a0ca38e7c3f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/sea\/seattle-kraken\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seattle Kraken<\/a><br \/><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"8c0b5061-09c3-2e5c-529b-274a22d1b6bb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/sj\/san-jose-sharks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Jose Sharks<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923137_668_edm.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For all the fanfare about <a data-player-guid=\"8e2e22e8-01b6-8acb-8a50-47f4941b52c6\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3895074\/connor-mcdavid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Connor McDavid<\/a> forgoing free agency to re-sign with the Oilers, the fact remains that he heard their plans, looked at their roster and decided that he&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/46511485\/nhl-2025-26-connor-mcdavid-contract-extension-oilers-free-agency-trades-fans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spending only the next three seasons<\/a> chasing a Stanley Cup with them. Although that doesn&#8217;t inspire much confidence about the long-term prospects of the Oilers, it does mean McDavid believes there&#8217;s enough here to win in the short term.<\/p>\n<p>(And hey, cheer up, <a data-player-guid=\"6b2cc7e8-2609-d4e0-5d7e-aef611d2037c\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114727\/leon-draisaitl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leon Draisaitl<\/a>, even though McDavid might bolt in summer 2028 and you&#8217;re signed through 2032-33. Remember: Mark Messier won the Cup after Wayne Gretzky left!)<\/p>\n<p>In many ways, this is the same team that came up short against the Panthers (again) in the Stanley Cup Final, albeit one that should have a healthy <a data-player-guid=\"5b0d90b5-918f-a2ac-02fb-b9960c87f6e7\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5509\/zach-hyman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zach Hyman<\/a> at some point in the next few months. GM Stan Bowman made some additions by subtraction (such as <a data-player-guid=\"0b808572-ceef-0654-536f-94f4d378edd0\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5251\/evander-kane\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Evander Kane<\/a>) and is hoping a combination of veteran additions like <a data-player-guid=\"5f0f475f-2ff2-c30a-e53b-c2bf49e769d0\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3149619\/andrew-mangiapane\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Mangiapane<\/a> and an infusion of youth in players like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5080153\/matt-savoie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Savoie<\/a> can provide the secondary scoring the team needs behind Connor and Leon.<\/p>\n<p>Edmonton&#8217;s top six defensemen are pretty terrific, especially with the emergence of <a data-player-guid=\"e1693296-9365-b8bd-84c3-e7ffbb13dbb8\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3151136\/jake-walman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Walman<\/a>. The goaltending is &#8230; well, the kind of thing that probably makes McDavid want to sign only a two-year extension. <a data-player-guid=\"8cbb2141-3895-67e0-318a-1a012cd17466\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4268767\/stuart-skinner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stuart Skinner<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"5951fdff-35cc-048a-f3f8-aa3b7096b0c5\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5524\/calvin-pickard\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Calvin Pickard<\/a>, last seen being the evil of two lessers before a Stanley Cup Final elimination game, are back, and the Oilers hope former Utah goalie Connor Ingraham might be able to contribute at some point as well.<\/p>\n<p>Kris Knoblauch has coached this team to a .656 points percentage in 151 regular-season games. There&#8217;s no reason to believe the Oilers can&#8217;t repeat that feat this season. On paper, this doesn&#8217;t look like a team destined for a third straight trip to the Stanley Cup Final, but it would be foolhardy to bet against McDavid and Draisaitl finding a way to get back there. But with <a data-player-guid=\"69897d40-36c6-8a74-ac19-5772d854f8fe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3042055\/shea-theodore\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shea Theodore<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"62d6ff6d-b268-d714-c09d-2a0ca34244cb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3652964\/noah-hanifin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Noah Hanifin<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"a42efa27-82fe-2cc5-37c2-825eeccab4ff\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5202\/brayden-mcnabb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brayden McNabb<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"6163685c-5fc6-0f8d-3278-2064981a764d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4312877\/zach-whitecloud\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zach Whitecloud<\/a>, they still have a stout top four on defense in front of <a data-player-guid=\"3567992b-2f51-dd8c-914e-f68c237befe3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3939714\/adin-hill\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adin Hill<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/article\/former-flyers-g-hart-almost-certain-to-join-golden-knights-in-coming-days\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whoever will end up<\/a> sharing the crease with him.<\/p>\n<p>But the reason the Golden Knights have inspired this kind of buzz can be summed up in two words: Mitch and Marner. Imagine the feeling of being extracted from the Toronto pressure cooker to end up on <a data-player-guid=\"656e0c4e-5914-3a54-d2de-1242b6f15b5e\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3648002\/jack-eichel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Eichel<\/a>&#8216;s wing &#8212; and imagine being Jack Eichel, lining up with a 100-point, 200-foot player who could elevate your game to unforeseen heights. Their line with <a data-player-guid=\"8f7dfc9b-5439-24c0-2d58-0aaa4546a435\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114985\/ivan-barbashev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ivan Barbashev<\/a> could reach juggernaut status. Not only does it mean the NHL writ large can celebrate the legacy of one of the best two-way centers and best Slovenian player in league history &#8212; with apologies to Jan Mursak &#8212; but it means the Kings are going to be extra aggressive in trying to maximize their last year with him.<\/p>\n<p>The Kings have enough offensive weaponry around Kopitar (10th in expected goals for at 5-on-5 last season) to thrive. <a data-player-guid=\"6ad87f20-a363-6b83-6f19-8325018d0d0a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114802\/adrian-kempe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adrian Kempe<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"b7016c24-78b1-e675-1976-dfe7c23e0cb5\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3114743\/kevin-fiala\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Fiala<\/a> are both coming off 35-goal seasons, and <a data-player-guid=\"118e75b2-b87e-305c-bd07-81d8aba90255\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697383\/quinton-byfield\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Quinton Byfield<\/a> has more to give. Imagine where their offense would have been with something better than the 27th-best power play in the NHL last season.<\/p>\n<p>My concerns, beyond Jim Hiller&#8217;s atrocious decision-making in the playoffs: that the depth on their defense, including <a data-player-guid=\"3ddfe434-ed33-b043-001d-b085e6af02ec\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2976843\/cody-ceci\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cody Ceci<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"d80e89c7-8dde-254a-5131-efba1808fee3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2563034\/joel-edmundson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joel Edmundson<\/a>, is too ineffective and slow; that goalie <a data-player-guid=\"7830da48-62e7-b5e1-a58c-2ec2c677e568\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2610321\/darcy-kuemper\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Darcy Kuemper<\/a> regresses from his Vezina-nominated season; and that GM Ken Holland&#8217;s peculiar first offseason as Kings GM negatively impacts the roster. But hey, he did sign Corey Perry, which obviously means the Kings will play for the Stanley Cup.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923139_190_van.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I have the Canucks in the playoffs because I&#8217;m taking the completely na\u00efve approach that everything will work itself out. That <a data-player-guid=\"07712c18-6d03-981b-bde7-9ff9fd90b2a9\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4233566\/elias-pettersson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elias Pettersson<\/a> can regain his 100-point form after a healthy offseason and with the toxins drained out of the Canucks&#8217; locker room now that <a data-player-guid=\"edddea19-8c2d-f283-933b-d0f4193c80f0\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/2590852\/jt-miller\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">J.T. Miller<\/a> is on the Rangers. That the Canucks have the good sense to pair Pettersson with a returning <a data-player-guid=\"e09df7bd-def5-a6ba-5dc5-b39bde8404ec\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3899979\/brock-boeser\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brock Boeser<\/a>. That <a data-player-guid=\"83181c1d-fdf9-c173-fbcb-ff2ef274cd73\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4233643\/filip-chytil\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Filip Chytil<\/a> remains healthy enough. That <a data-player-guid=\"33864125-f79f-41e9-54e9-1f896d81c371\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3096217\/thatcher-demko\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thatcher Demko<\/a> remains healthy enough. That <a data-player-guid=\"1c945598-5537-0cf5-99e5-32f1715bdc5f\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4320548\/quinn-hughes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Quinn Hughes<\/a> remains healthy enough and is a Norris finalist while &#8212; and this is the crucial part &#8212; wearing a Vancouver jersey this season instead of one with devil horns.<\/p>\n<p>If all of these things happen, the Canucks are a playoff team. I&#8217;m sticking to that. For better or worse, Joel Quenneville is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/45053260\/sources-ducks-tab-quenneville-return-chicago-scandal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">back behind an NHL bench<\/a>, and I&#8217;m confident he&#8217;s going to unlock something in players such as <a data-player-guid=\"82d801a2-193c-3827-8822-1ebcd7d61dd2\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5149153\/leo-carlsson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leo Carlsson<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"cd552014-6e7f-34f7-994f-a0c8240bd3d2\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4874718\/mason-mctavish\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mason McTavish<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"bc94de17-75db-cfa9-202a-c5e2ee130531\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4565262\/jackson-lacombe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jackson LaCombe<\/a> that Greg Cronin failed to unleash. Well, that and goalie <a data-player-guid=\"6e534dbd-e307-2ccd-9ac0-b9be330e380b\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4588165\/lukas-dostal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lukas Dostal<\/a> continuing to progress toward franchise goaltender status.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923139_537_cgy.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Flames shocked the league last season with a 96-point campaign that was a tiebreaker away from postseason qualification. They can thank Gilroy, California&#8217;s own <a data-player-guid=\"76a254e9-82ca-db12-fa5b-1ace5a1c7419\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4587952\/dustin-wolf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dustin Wolf<\/a> for that, backstopping them to 29 wins in 53 games with a .910 save percentage, and finishing second in the voting for NHL rookie for the year. I&#8217;m still trying to figure out this magic trick, considering how utterly average the Flames were at 5-on-5 last season.<\/p>\n<p>As has been the case since <a data-player-guid=\"2253f50a-7d0f-f0c4-7345-d3da9d3fdf65\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4024854\/matthew-tkachuk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Tkachuk<\/a> was traded, they&#8217;re a supporting cast in search of a star. Now they&#8217;re caught in a purgatory as some of their top names are aging out (<a data-player-guid=\"cf7eecb0-c872-4e75-730d-6f4fe12de605\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5349\/nazem-kadri\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nazem Kadri<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"e06ffd56-de90-a04a-da9f-d41c45faed55\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3797\/mikael-backlund\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mikael Backlund<\/a>) while the next wave &#8212; like brilliant 19-year-old defenseman <a data-player-guid=\"228044ce-267f-3a63-ae86-2a236a7800b2\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5216878\/zayne-parekh\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zayne Parekh<\/a> &#8212; needs some time to ripen. This could be a double-digit points decline, but the future is bright for the Flames.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923139_961_sea.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen projections that have the Kraken anywhere from 72 points to 84 points under new head coach Lane Lambert. I&#8217;ll take the lower end of that scale. I didn&#8217;t love the Kraken&#8217;s underlying offensive numbers last season (28th in expected goals for, 30th in scoring chances per 60 minutes at 5-on-5), and the Islanders were middle of the pack at best during his time as their head coach. It&#8217;s a middling team in need of a new direction under GM Jason Botterill. A robust trade deadline sale under a rising salary cap would be a good start.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759923140_993_sj.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Much like <a data-player-guid=\"39b94cbf-c622-3ef0-b459-b4730c1fdf84\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5206628\/macklin-celebrini\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Macklin Celebrini<\/a> had he remained at Boston University, the Sharks are entering their junior year of college. It&#8217;s still a party, it&#8217;s still a team that can be bad but fun, and we find it charming. Players such as Celebrini, <a data-player-guid=\"2a37a748-6d46-31dd-a0cb-02a968f67155\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5149155\/will-smith\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Will Smith<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"19207444-2634-30c3-abff-070bf6d95238\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4874721\/william-eklund\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">William Eklund<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"5fcb6b09-b617-32ad-9d1b-7e3171851385\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5291934\/michael-misa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Misa<\/a> can flaunt gaudy offensive stats without being overly concerned with their plus\/minus deficit.
