{"id":198435,"date":"2025-10-08T18:48:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T18:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/198435\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T18:48:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T18:48:10","slug":"charlie-hunnam-defends-monster-the-ed-gein-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/198435\/","title":{"rendered":"Charlie Hunnam defends &#8216;Monster: The Ed Gein Story&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/charlie-hunnam\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charlie Hunnam<\/a> hopes that after viewers watch <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/monster\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Monster: The Ed Gein Story<\/a>, they&#8217;re left questioning who the real monsters are.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_3-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Hunnam, who plays Gein, defended the series ahead of the Oct. 3 release of the new season in the Netflix true-crime horror anthology, given that the previous two editions \u2014 The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story \u2014 both received criticism for being sensational portrayals.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;If people are compelled to talk about it and think about it, hopefully they\u2019ll actually be compelled to watch the show,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/monster-ending-charlie-hunnam-ed-gein-criticism-interview-1236393422\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he told The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> when asked what he hopes conversations would be about Ed Gein. &#8220;What I would hope and feel really confident in is that it was a very sincere exploration of the human condition and why this boy did what he did.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, The Ed Gein Story picks up in 1950s rural Wisconsin, and follows the titular monster \u2014 known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul \u2014 and tells the tale of his perverse crimes, which would go on to inspire the onscreen horrors seen in\u00a0Psycho,\u00a0The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and\u00a0The Silence of the Lambs.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Of the episodes, Hunnam said, &#8220;I never felt like we were sensationalizing it. I never felt on set that we did anything gratuitous or for shock impact. It was all in order to try to tell this story as honestly as we could.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> And, he hopes that means viewers are left looking inward after watching. \u201cIs it Ed Gein who was abused and left in isolation and suffering from undiagnosed mental illness and&#8230;that manifested in some pretty horrendous ways? Or was the monster the legion of filmmakers that took inspiration from his life and sensationalized it to make entertainment and darken the American psyche in the process?\u201d he told the outlet.\u00a0&#8220;Is Ed Gein the monster of this show, or is Hitchcock the monster of the show?
