If withdrawn early and this rule is not satisfied, a tax penalty will be assessed to the earnings withdrawn, according to Brandon Gregg, certified financial planner (CFP) and financial advisor<\/a> with BBK Wealth Management<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Not Ensuring the Roth Makes Sense for Your Specific Financial Situation<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s no denying that the tax free growth and distributions of Roth money is a huge benefit and many make the decision to invest solely based on that reason,\u201d Gregg said. \u201cHowever, depending on a person\u2019s tax situation<\/a>, it may be important to also focus on saving taxes now.\u201d<\/p>\n Pre-tax retirement account<\/a> contributions lower taxable income, thus helping to save money for the current tax year. This doesn\u2019t mean a person doesn\u2019t save in their Roth at all, Gregg said, but all options should be weighed and balanced out to provide for tax savings now and in the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n Not Taking Advantage of a Spousal IRA Contribution<\/p>\n There are contribution limits based on earned income with Roth IRAs. However, even if a spouse has no earned income, a spousal contribution can be made on behalf of the spouse that is earning income for the year, Gregg said.<\/p>\n Not Investing the Funds Correctly<\/p>\n Gregg said to take advantage of the tax-free growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWork with an advisor to make sure that the funds are invested to maximize growth,\u201d he said. \u201cOf course, this should still fit within your plan and your current risk tolerance and objectives, but you don\u2019t want to leave tax free money on the table over the long term.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Not Documenting Roth Conversion Correctly\u00a0<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/cdn.gobankingrates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/icon-20.svg?webp=1&quality=75\"){kind=icon}
