(ABC News: Joel Wilson)

That afternoon, Scout was playing with a friend’s dog who was not as keen on the water.

Miranda left the lake after an hour, but she said it was already too late.

“On that short walk back [to the car], maybe a five-minute walk, he started tripping … and when we got to the car, he was struggling to get up into the car seat,” she recalled.

“It was so fast.

“When I got into the driver’s seat and I looked back at him, his eyes were just sunken in and he looked like he was trying to tell me something was very wrong.

“So, I sped straight to the closest vet.”

At the vet, Scout was suffering seizures, tachycardia and needed to be intubated as he could not breathe independently.

‘Safest to stay away’

Canberra veterinarian Eamon Ryan treated Scout, but said it was unlikely he could be saved, forcing Miranda to make the difficult choice to let him go.

Dr Ryan said he believed Scout had suffered blue-green algae toxicity, with severe sickness occurring shortly after exposure.

“They’ll often be a little bit wobbly, weak, vomiting and drooling. (ABC News: Luke Stephenson)

Dr Ryan said Scout’s case was not isolated.

“Given that we’ve had several dogs present in a short period of time, I think it’s probably safest to stay away from the lake … until things settle down,” Dr Ryan said.

“At our clinic, we’ve had two in the last week with clinical symptoms supporting exposure. They were at the lake within an hour or two before presenting.”

Megan Wright, the director of Canberra Veterinary Emergency Services, said they had treated three dogs for blue-green algae toxicity since June, one as recently as Monday night.

She said that dog was having seizures but was successfully treated.

“This was a really good outcome for the dog and it was able to go home,” she said.

“However, the dog did have very extensive critical care … when the patient came in, it was seizing and within 4 hours, it had to be placed on a ventilator.”

Ms Wright said all three dogs who became unwell had been at Lake Ginninderra.

“We do want to let people of the community know that the risk is not necessarily with full submersion of water — it’s contact with that water and that may be something that is not as well-known,” she said.

Ms Wright said given the recent cases of toxicity, closing the lake would be “appropriate”.

‘No sign of increased algae’

Updated warning signs were seen at Lake Ginninderra this morning, and City Services provides water quality advice online.

The government’s most recent results for Lake Ginninderra are from October 2 and state that most areas are open for swimming.

Authorities put up a sign to warn about blue-green algae at Lake Ginninderra. (ABC News: Mary Goode)

Ecologist Rod Ubrihien at the University of Canberra said his team had been sampling the water at Lake Ginninderra weekly since June.

His researchers tested the site earlier today.

“There was no sign of increased algae, or blue-green algae in the water, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there in isolated areas,” Dr Ubrihien said.

The team gathers its samples from a boat and not along the shore.

He said blue-green algae floats or exists in upper water columns, which means wind can push it around and into concentrated spots.

“Usually, we think of Lake Ginninderra as the best in terms of blue-green algae among Canberra’s three main lakes,” Dr Ubrihien said.

“It is very early in the season to have blooms … But, again, nature’s unpredictable.”

He said it was important that people were aware that risks were heightened for animals as they potentially drink lake water.

QR codes?

Miranda has urged the government to make water quality information more accessible.

She has suggested QR codes be placed lakeside so people can more easily see updates.

In addition to its website, the government also points Canberrans to Canadian app, Swim Guide, which posts water quality data for more than 8,000 waterways globally.

New signs warn about toxic blue-green algae at Lake Ginninderra. (ABC News: Mary Goode)

The Environment Protection Authority’s Su Wild-River said the government was not currently “seeing a decline in water quality”.

“The ACT government does its best to monitor and communicate to people effectively if there’s an elevated risk,” Dr Wild-River said.

“It is really important that people pay attention to those warnings we put out … and we will put signs up at any of the key areas.

“It’s important to understand that blue-green algae is natural … and it’s always going to be present in ACT lakes and waterways.
