{"id":199960,"date":"2025-10-09T08:56:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T08:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/199960\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T08:56:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T08:56:08","slug":"nrl-star-waits-for-evidence-in-drug-betting-scandal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/199960\/","title":{"rendered":"NRL star waits for evidence in drug, betting scandal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brandon Smith is still waiting to see police evidence as he fights allegations of supplying cocaine to fellow NRL star Victor Radley. <\/p>\n<p>The South Sydney hooker did not attend Southport Magistrates Court for the Thursday mention of drug and betting charges. <\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<a name=\"&amp;lpos=story:editorspicks:inline:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nrl\/story\/_\/id\/46495245\/nrl-grand-final-brisbane-broncos-exorcise-ghosts-hold-nerve-claim-title\" class=\"img-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/r1555826_1296x1296_1-1.jpg&#038;w=130&#038;h=130&#038;scale=crop&#038;location=center.jpeg\" width=\"65\" height=\"65\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Smith is accused of unlawfully supplying Sydney Roosters lock Radley with cocaine at Currimundi, on Queensland&#8217;s Sunshine Coast, on June 7. <\/p>\n<p>Text messages allegedly exchanged between Smith and his former teammate Radley were uncovered in a police investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Radley has not been charged with any offence.<\/p>\n<p>He has ruled himself out of playing for England in the upcoming Rugby League Ashes series following the scandal. <\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>Brandon Smith of the Rabbitohs.\u00a0Photo by Chris Hyde\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Radley was set to run out against the Kangaroos for the three-Test series starting on October 25 at Wembley Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>The Roosters also hit Radley with a hefty 10-match ban without pay, and he was also made to give a $30,000 donation to St Vincent&#8217;s Hospital for charity research.<\/p>\n<p>Smith remains banned from any contact with Radley as he fights to clear his name.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are awaiting the brief of evidence that the Queensland Police rely on to establish the charges,&#8221; leading Sydney lawyer Paul McGirr told AAP on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once we have that material, we will read it and take it from there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The court ordered the brief of evidence to be delivered to the defence by November 13.<\/p>\n<p>Smith has been charged jointly on the cocaine supply count with Joshua Geoffrey Peter Bainbridge, 34, and the court ordered no contact between the pair.<\/p>\n<p>The NRL star also faces a charge of disclosing inside knowledge of the Souths&#8217;
