{"id":200789,"date":"2025-10-09T16:26:23","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T16:26:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/200789\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T16:26:23","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T16:26:23","slug":"deadly-blue-ringed-octopus-found-at-popular-beach-in-sydneys-brighton-le-sands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/200789\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadly blue-ringed octopus found at popular beach in Sydney\u2019s Brighton Le-Sands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">A shocked swimmer has found one of the ocean\u2019s most deadly creatures at a popular Sydney beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Footage posted online shows a blue-ringed octopus in a small fishing net after reportedly being found at Brighton Le-Sands, in the city\u2019s south, on October 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">While not initially looking like the deadly creature, the octopus flares its blue rings in a sign of aggression after sprayed with water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-178igh4-StyledParagraph e1s06mna1\">Know the news with the 7NEWS app: <a class=\"css-cvgehw-StyledContextualLink e1s06mna0\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/app?utm_source=7NEWS&amp;utm_medium=contextual-link-app&amp;utm_campaign=7news-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Download today <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/static\/media\/right-red-arrow.92bca5db.svg\" alt=\"Download today\" height=\"14\" width=\"20\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Despite being only centimetres long, the blue-ringed octopus is heralded as one of the most potentially deadly animals in the ocean due to its venom that is about 1000 times stronger than cyanide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">A single bite from the species leads to nausea, respiratory arrest, heart failure, severe paralysis, blindness and death without urgent treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">With such a deadly reputation, the video struck fear into a number of social media users after being posted to <a class=\"css-1lg16vp-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@danasuwan\/video\/7556451184169536786\">TikTok<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cCrazy how so many people don\u2019t actually know that this is one of the most, if not the most dangerously poisonous\/venomous creatures to ever exist,\u201d one user wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">A second said they were shocked to see the octopus had been caught at the popular beach, adding that \u201cthese things are deadly and they are not commonly found in Brighton Le Sands\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">However, others noted that the species is mostly passive and only bites or shows its fluorescent blue rings when it feels threatened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cLeave the octopus alone they won\u2019t hurt you unless you try to hurt it,\u201d a third wrote. \u201cIts home is the ocean, nothing crazy about that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">According to <a class=\"css-1lg16vp-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.australiangeographic.com.au\/fact-file\/fact-file-blue-ringed-octopus-hapalochlaena-maculosa\/\">Australian Geographic<\/a>, the \u201codds of being stung by a blue-ringed octopus are luckily relatively low, mainly because the animal is rarely encountered in the first place.
