{"id":201344,"date":"2025-10-09T21:22:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T21:22:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/201344\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T21:22:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T21:22:16","slug":"we-believe-that-british-racing-can-be-exciting-again-meet-the-21-year-old-trying-to-revive-the-grassroots-cycling-scene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/201344\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We believe that British racing can be exciting again\u2019 &#8211; meet the 21-year old trying to revive the grassroots cycling scene"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"440474f8-cf96-403c-b1f3-ebe7a736febe\">As Storm Amy swept through the UK and Ireland last weekend, pulling walls of rain in its wake and leaving over 40,000 homes powerless, there was, on a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/the-best-32-places-to-ride-in-britain-part-one-35289\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/the-best-32-places-to-ride-in-britain-part-one-35289\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hillside in Dorset,<\/a> an afternoon of relative peace.<\/p>\n<p>The ground, still damp from the day before, was a small memory of the storm that had ripped through the country \u2013 leaving in its wake \u201can incredibly strong tailwind\u201d hugging the top of the hill (\u201cI think a lot of riders were happy with that,\u201d laughed the Zig Zag Hill Climb&#8217;s organiser, Elliott Colyer).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">64 riders lined up on Sunday to race the Zig-Zag Hill in Shaftesbury, a climb in the Dorset hills in a series of hairpin bends at a 15% maximum gradient, over 3.8 kilometres, to the sound of clanging cow bells and spectators sipping hot coffees fresh from the on-site machine.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.75%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FfaSTSGD2KYnDjwS66zPqH.jpg\" alt=\"Group of cyclists go up a hill, autumn leaves around them\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FfaSTSGD2KYnDjwS66zPqH.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FfaSTSGD2KYnDjwS66zPqH.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: PelotonPix)<\/p>\n<p id=\"1ce9bc9a-dd8e-43f7-b0e0-e14cf23b640d\">\u201cIt was basically everything that I hoped it would be\u201d, a tired Colyer told Cycling Weekly after the event. \u201cThe mix of riders we had was really cool to see, from domestic riders through to local clubs and people who just enjoyed riding their bikes.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"1ce9bc9a-dd8e-43f7-b0e0-e14cf23b640d-1\">\u201cAnd the atmosphere on the hill sections was really cool &#8211; there were lots of cowbells which definitely helped create the atmosphere. Coming back to HQ after everyone had finished, there was a really good buzz in the village hall, just like a really good sense of camaraderie, and just a happy sort of vibe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colyer has cycling in his blood. As a kid, he would<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/routes\/south\/five-reasons-ride-new-forest-national-park-432782\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/routes\/south\/five-reasons-ride-new-forest-national-park-432782\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> ride the New Forest<\/a> with his dad, before properly committing to cycling training in sixth form, and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/training\/hill-climbing-secrets-anyone-can-go-faster-uphill-440898\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/training\/hill-climbing-secrets-anyone-can-go-faster-uphill-440898\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">competing in hill climbs<\/a> in COVID. Having found himself back at home post-uni, as the summer began to shift to autumn, Colyer began scouring the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/cycling-time-trials-360699\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/cycling-time-trials-360699\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cycling Time Trials (CTT) <\/a>map. While there were still races in Bristol and around London, he found there was next to no races in the Dorset area &#8211; and the idea for the Zig Zag Hill Climb began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gradient isn\u2019t anything special,\u201d he said of the climb he fondly refers to as \u201cDorset\u2019s mini<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/latest-news\/alpe-dhuez-classic-cycling-climbs-139953\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/latest-news\/alpe-dhuez-classic-cycling-climbs-139953\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Alpe d\u2019Huez<\/a>\u201d. \u201cYou can find steeper [hills] for longer, but the fact that you\u2019ve got three proper hairpins back to back is quite unique.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Hill-climbing] is completely mental, but at the same time, it\u2019s incredibly welcoming,\u201d Colyer added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe barrier to entry is so low, because there\u2019s no need for any specialist equipment. It really is just you and your bike, and if the weather\u2019s quite horrible, which it\u2019s mainly going to be in September\/October\/November, [the race is] only 5-10 minutes long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.75%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/jJ5cwVRQazsc3Uymdn3ceg.jpg\" alt=\"Group of people sit in a village hall\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/jJ5cwVRQazsc3Uymdn3ceg.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/jJ5cwVRQazsc3Uymdn3ceg.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Back at HQ, warming up after the race and presentations<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: PelotonPix)<\/p>\n<p id=\"0f68fd38-c79f-4052-bad9-001aecc7a9b4\">But the Zig-Zag climb was also hosted in response to wider &#8211; and worrying &#8211; trends in cycling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLots of events and road races specifically are really struggling for entries and being able to cover their costs,\u201d he said. \u201cI think that it\u2019s become like the chicken or the egg [situation] &#8211; riders wanting concrete information that [the race] is going to go ahead before they enter, but the race can\u2019t go ahead if the organisers don&#8217;t have the entries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it&#8217;s just got itself caught in a negative spiral at the moment. And it\u2019s about, how can we flip that around?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colyer is taking matters into his own hands, the Zig Zag Hill Climb one step in his mission to address a dwindling domestic race scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBritish professional road cycling is struggling with no male continental teams, fewer events and fewer chances. We don&#8217;t want to sit idly by &#8211; we&#8217;re going to try and build something that could help it change,&#8221; the 21-year old said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Next for me is transitioning towards setting up a British cycling team for next year with a couple of friends and people who helped put on the hill climb this weekend.
