{"id":202092,"date":"2025-10-10T04:34:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T04:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/202092\/"},"modified":"2025-10-10T04:34:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T04:34:11","slug":"evacuations-ordered-after-magnitude-7-4-philippines-earthquake-sparks-tsunami-warnings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/202092\/","title":{"rendered":"Evacuations ordered after magnitude-7.4 Philippines earthquake sparks tsunami warnings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The president of the Philippines has ordered evacuations in coastal areas near the epicentre of a magnitude-7.4 earthquake that struck in the Mindanao region, sparking multiple tsunami warnings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The earthquake struck about 20 kilometres away from the town of Manay at 9:43am local time (11:43am AEST) on Friday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, which initially logged it as a magnitude-7.6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) both listed the tremor as a magnitude-7.4. (AP: Manman Dejeto)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said authorities were urgently assessing the situation on the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Search and rescue efforts were also being organised for deployment as soon as it was safe to do so, Mr Marcos said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We are working round the clock to ensure that help reaches everyone who needs it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Earlier, the Philippine seismology chief Teresito Bacolcol said his agency would issue a tsunami warning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Waves of more than 1 metre above normal tidal levels were forecast on the country&#8217;s Pacific coast over a two-hour period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Bacolcol&#8217;s office also urged residents in coastal areas in the affected zone &#8220;to immediately evacuate to higher grounds or move farther inland&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There were no immediate reports of damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Edwin Jubahib, the governor of the southern Philippine province of Davao Oriental, said people panicked when the earthquake struck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Some buildings were reported to have been damaged,&#8221; he told broadcaster DZMM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was very strong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A line of school children, including one wearing a red bike helmet and another holding a grey bag\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/c2d179aa9863a68fce4868ed325c1432\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">School children were rushed outside in Davao City after the tremor. (AP: Manman Dejeto)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Immediately after the quake, the United States Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat from Hawaii, saying hazardous waves were possible for coasts within 300km of the quake&#8217;s epicentre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the half-hour after the quake, the USGA recorded multiple aftershocks in similar locations, including tremors of magnitudes ranging between 5.6 and 6.0.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-01\/at-least-69-people-dead-after-powerful-philippines-quake\/105838220\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">At least 69 people dead in Philippines quake<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The quake, which struck the central Cebu province, injured many others and sent residents scrambling out of homes into darkness as the intense shaking cut off power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In Indonesia, a tsunami warning was issued by the country&#8217;s geophysics agency for the northern Sulawesi and Papua regions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The agency&#8217;s modelling suggested there was a risk of tsunami waves as high as 50 centimetres hitting Indonesia&#8217;s shorelines, it said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Panic as buildings shake<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Christine Sierte, a teacher in the town of Compostela near Manay, told AFP she was in the middle of an online meeting when the violent shaking from the earthquake started.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was very slow at first then it got stronger \u2026 that&#8217;s the longest time of my life. (AFP: Supplied\/Golden Cornucopia, Davao de Oro State College)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said that some of the school&#8217;s hundreds of students &#8220;suffered panic attacks and difficulty in breathing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kath Cortez, a local journalist based in Davao city to the west of Manay, told AFP the ground floor walls of her family&#8217;s house were showing small cracks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was surprised by the strength.
