A quirk of the federal government\u2019s procurement rules for third-party suppliers is that it doesn\u2019t have to go to the market for contracts under $80,000. This is how OpenAI has managed to cinch a $50,000 deal with Treasury without any competition.<\/p>\n

The ChatGPT creator\u2019s contract is for 12 months\u2019 work from late June 2025, Crikey<\/a> first revealed on Wednesday, to provide \u201csoftware-as-a-service\u201d. We\u2019re told it\u2019s for work for a trial that\u2019s limited to Treasury itself, but it could be rolled out at a larger scale within the department if it\u2019s successful.<\/p>\n
