While Hollywood director Paul Feig makes movies that capture the Zeitgeist, he’s conscious of not narrowing in on specific cultural reference points in his comedies.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“I think it all goes back to character,” Feig told ABC News.<\/p>\n
“I try not to make any of my comedies culturally referential or about specific things in a culture because if you do an American comedy and you’re referencing all these American products or commercials or \u2026 whatever’s pop culture at the time, you cut off the rest of the world from it.<\/p>\n
“There’s been other countries’ comedy that I love, but they’re making references [where] it sounds funny, [but] I don’t know who they’re talking about.<\/p>\n
“So, I always try to make sure it’s all about character.<\/p>\n
“It’s all about human beings, how we interact.”<\/p>\n
Feig is behind the smash hit 2011 film Bridesmaids, starring Australia’s Rebel Wilson and Rose Byrne, with Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy.<\/p>\n

He’ll be giving a keynote address next week at South by Southwest Sydney (SXSW Sydney), where he’ll also receive the festival’s inaugural Screen Pioneer Award.<\/p>\n
Feig’s strategy when it comes to filmmaking ultimately keeps his movies and TV shows relevant for future generations.<\/p>\n
“Bridesmaids, people love that movie because it’s about a friendship falling apart,” Feig said.<\/p>\n
“Everybody knows [what that’s like]. In any country you’re in, you know if you’re about to lose your best friend, it’s terrible.<\/p>\n
“So, I think keeping things on the human condition like that, that’s the key to kind of having something that becomes, hopefully, timeless.”<\/p>\n

A retrospective of some of Feig’s most beloved works will be screened at SXSW Sydney, including a 14-hour all-day marathon of his cult television series Freaks and Geeks, which gained a significant following years after being cancelled after one season, and was a launching pad for stars like Seth Rogen and James Franco.<\/p>\n
The Housemaid may just be Feig’s favourite movie he’s made<\/p>\n
Feig is super excited about his latest project The Housemaid, which is based on the bestselling novel by Freida McFadden.<\/p>\n

“I think it’s one of my favourite movies I’ve ever made, if not possibly my favourite one now, so I can’t wait for you to see it,” Feig said.<\/p>\n
SXSW Sydney will run from October 13-19, with more than 100 feature films screened during this time, including some world and Australian premieres.<\/p>\n
