Arturo Gatti Jr., the son of boxing icon Arturo “Thunder” Gatti who was just an infant when his famous dad died by suicide, has died, officials said Wednesday. <\/p>\n
He was 17. <\/p>\n
“The WBA and the boxing world mourn the passing of Arturo Gatti Jr.,” the World Boxing Association said in a statement<\/a>. “His journey was just beginning, yet his spirit will live on \u2014 now reunited with his legendary father among the stars.” <\/p>\n The elder Gatti won junior lightweight and super lightweight titles, leading to his induction to the International Boxing Hall of Fame<\/a>.<\/p>\n He died on July 11, 2009, in a seaside resort in northeastern Brazil<\/a>, officials said.<\/p>\n His wife, Gatti Jr.\u2019s mother, Amanda Rodrigues, was initially detained and suspected of strangling her husband with a purse strap while he slept.<\/p>\n A judge set Rodrigues free after a coroner\u2019s report pointed toward suicide \u2014 though some of Gatti’s loved ones didn’t <\/a>accept that he could have died at his own hand.<\/p>\n Brazilian authorities said he hanged himself with a bag strap that he tied to a staircase column.<\/p>\n American boxer and social media influencer Jake Paul lamented Gatti Jr.’s passing, saying he had “so much potential.” <\/p>\n “Very sad to see a young man with so much potential lose his life and do so like his legendary father,” Paul said in statement <\/a>Wednesday. “May they conquer together up above.”<\/p>\n An aspiring boxer, Gatti Jr. posted a photo illustration on Instagram two weeks showing how he might have looked standing alongside his late father.<\/p>\n The illustration depicted them both wearing trunks marked “Thunder.”<\/p>\n If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or chat live at 988lifeline.org<\/a>.
