{"id":203097,"date":"2025-10-10T14:10:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T14:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/203097\/"},"modified":"2025-10-10T14:10:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T14:10:08","slug":"iss-astronaut-captures-amazing-video-of-spacex-starlink-satellite-train-cruising-above-auroras","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/203097\/","title":{"rendered":"ISS astronaut captures amazing video of SpaceX Starlink satellite train cruising above auroras"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"98fc88a4-f4a9-49e8-a4a1-3d41a19821b9\">An amazing new video shows flashes of sunlight sparkling off a batch of SpaceX satellites, with a green aurora glowing just below.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> astronaut Don Pettit, an accomplished amateur photographer, captured the stunning &#8220;train&#8221; of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> Starlink broadband satellites during his recent mission to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a> (ISS). The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aurora<\/a> was produced by solar particles slamming into <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth\u2019s atmosphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the natural light show, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starlink-satellites.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starlink-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> group was &#8220;very visible. The peak brightness of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a> is roughly -2 magnitude in the night sky. For comparison, the brightest stars range between about magnitude 2 and -2, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venus<\/a> can get as bright as -4, and the sun is at magnitude -26. (Lower numbers indicate brighter objects on astronomers&#8217; magnitude scale.)<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"7531d696-ea11-4842-8805-16bb36ddeefc-1\">Pettit\u2019s latest space mission, a 220-day jaunt, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/don-pettit-nasas-oldest-active-astronaut-at-70-arrives-in-houston-after-7-month-space-mission-photo\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/don-pettit-nasas-oldest-active-astronaut-at-70-arrives-in-houston-after-7-month-space-mission-photo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concluded on his 70th birthday<\/a> on April 20, when the Russian <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40951-soyuz-spacecraft.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40951-soyuz-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Soyuz spacecraft<\/a> that carried him and his two crewmates touched down in the steppe of Kazakhstan. Since life gets busy on the ISS, however, Pettit has been steadily uploading a backlog of images and videos ever since coming home.<\/p>\n<p>Starlink current consists of nearly 8,600 operational satellites, according to a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/planet4589.org\/space\/con\/star\/stats.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/planet4589.org\/space\/con\/star\/stats.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tracker<\/a> maintained by space debris expert Jonathan McDowell. While that\u2019s a boon for remote areas looking for the reliable internet service SpaceX strives to provide, astronomers have concerns.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d9200f59-d8c8-4dc4-9275-4cd3b5eaad66\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starlink-direct-to-cell-satellites-light-pollution\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starlink-direct-to-cell-satellites-light-pollution\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brightness<\/a> Pettit observed is one of the worries, as these Starlink trains \u2014 usually most apparent shortly after launch aboard SpaceX\u2019s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon 9<\/a> rocket \u2014 can interfere with astronomical observations. Starlinks also have brought up space debris concerns, both in that more satellites raise the risk of collisions and because their reentry could leave traces of metals in Earth\u2019s atmosphere, potentially causing pollution and affecting climate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>In response to these concerns, SpaceX has changed the reflectivity of some of its satellites, and the company continues to emphasize that the Starlinks can be maneuvered in case of trouble.
