But don\u2019t be fooled \u2014 they might not be tiny lights at all, but colossal black holes and other massive cosmic giants.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have been scratching their heads over these curious red dots, which have been tucked away in the telescope\u2019s data since almost the beginning. Born just a few hundred million years after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/en\/could-our-galaxy-be-inside-a-giant-hole-this-bold-theory-might-solve-one-of-the-universes-biggest-mysteries_18865\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Big Bang<\/a>, these lights have sparked study after study \u2014 and the latest one may finally have an answer.<\/p>\n<p>Published in The Astrophysical Journal, the research suggests these seemingly small, tidy specks are actually sprawling, odd-shaped structures with no clear edges.<\/p>\n<p>Not all red dots are what they seem<\/p>\n<p>A team of researchers took a closer look at 99 of these red dots and found they\u2019re far from uniform. When viewed in ultraviolet, the reality behind their visible light appearance is dramatically different \u2014 they morph into strange, shapeless structures that defy the neat little dot image we had in mind.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Little-Red-Dots_nasa-esa-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The small red dots observed by the James Webb are of various kinds. \u00a9 ESA, NASA<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Webb\u2019s sharp UV vision, many of the dots appear more like irregular smudges than precise points of light.<\/p>\n<p>That in itself is peculiar. Most celestial objects don\u2019t change character like that across wavelengths. And since nearly a third of the dots showed this behavior, the scientists are fairly certain it\u2019s not just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/en\/new-spherex-space-telescope-reveals-ultra-detailed-cosmic-images-in-its-first-light_17623\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cosmic dust<\/a> playing tricks. Instead, they suspect powerful interactions in the surrounding environment are at play.<\/p>\n<p>Some may hide black holes, others newborn stars<\/p>\n<p>One of the study\u2019s authors, Pierluigi Rinaldi, shared via Nova University in the Netherlands: \u201cIn the spectrum of some of these little red dots, we directly detect the signatures of active black holes, with gas moving at thousands of kilometers per second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, not every dot tells the same story. Some clearly show the mark of black hole activity. Others? They seem more in line with processes involved in star formation.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, a previous study also pointed to black holes but with a twist \u2014 it proposed the existence of \u201cblack hole stars.\u201d These are theoretical beasts that devour matter like a black hole, but instead of vanishing it, they convert it into energy, shining even brighter than a typical star. And from across the universe, they\u2019d show up as tiny red dots.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/new_press_release-1024x666.jpeg\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The small red dots aren\u2019t really dots. \u00a9 P. Rinaldi, Jades, NASA<\/p>\n<p>What if our models are missing something?<\/p>\n<p>The new findings neither confirm nor debunk that black hole star idea. What they do reveal, though, is that the odd shapes of these dots point to strong forces interacting \u2014 possibly black holes, massive stars, or even galaxies on a collision course.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the twist: only 30% of the dots fall into this fuzzy-shape category. The remaining 70%? They appear neat and compact, even under ultraviolet scrutiny. And spectral analysis hints that at least some of them also host supermassive black holes.<\/p>\n<p>This is where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/en\/this-black-hole-merger-shatters-everything-astronomers-thought-possible_18936\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">black hole<\/a> star theory shines again \u2014 it provides a plausible way to explain the existence of such huge objects born so soon after the Big Bang. It\u2019s a paradox that\u2019s been tripping up cosmological models for decades.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there\u2019s only so much even the mighty James Webb can tell us. These dots lie unimaginably far away, and high-resolution data can only go so far.
